  1. I thought as much since the IFD switched to GPS-> LNAV+V automatically. But when you engage NAV or APPR mode, does the AP track?
  2. Hi everyone! Noticed a very strong avgas smell today when I switched off fuel pump at 500AGL (I am quite certain it was after the pump was switched off). It took about 10 secs to go away. All ops normal. No smell of avgas for the rest of the flight. Has anyone had this happened before? If so, where was the leak if it was a leak? Thanks
  3. Looking for some advice from anyone who has Avidyne 440 / 540 plus KFC 200: So I took my plane out for a quick VOR departure and RNAV approach to land today. Wind calm. With VOR, IFD indicates VLOC. The CDI on my HSI is giving the correct deviation when the course heading is set correctly but when the AP is engaged to NAV / CPLD mode, it turns the plane to exactly 30 degree left of the course and stays there even when the deviation clearly was on the right. With RNAV approach, IFD indicates GPS -> LNAV +V. The CDI is again giving the correct deviation when the course heading is set correctly but when the AP is engaged to APPR / Arm mode, nothing happens. The FD isn't doing anything at all and doesn't fly from one way point to the next. Before I ring my avionics shop, I just want to make sure that I have the right A/P settings. One thing I didn't do was to "Activate Approach" when I was doing the RNAV approach today. Would that have made an difference? Thanks everyone!
  4. Hi @M20Doc CHT2 has the proper CHT probe, I will double check the baffle sealing as well as swapping the probe to see Thanks everyone!
  5. The Sugar Bird Lady is legendary and so is the the organisation that both she and I work for: Royal Flying Doctor Service. Worth a visit to its base at Jandakot.
  6. I know Royal Aero Club of WA uses J for their complex aircraft training so if you are keen to fly a Mooney in Australia, you might want to start there. Expect the usual pre-hire check for insurance purposes. Also you need this : http://www.royalaeroclubwa.com.au/content/page/short-term-licence-validation.html. They are based at Jandakot - the regional airport of Perth. You will find Australia pretty easy to fly around - low terrain, good weather, cheap landing fees, and plenty of Class G space - and a trip up north along the coast to Broome and Kimberley or inland to Ayers Rock will definitely give you plenty to smile about. Have fun!
  7. Hi everyone! My 1981 J's #2 is, on average 30 to 35-degree hotter than every other cylinders (355-360 vs 325) running LOP. Wonder if there is any way I can bring this down (like the baffle mod for #1) so it's the same temp as all others. Then I can run all of them bit closer to 350 in cruise for better fuel burn. The compression on it is 76 and it peaks first. The baffle is brand new with good seal. Also it seems like it's getting hotter as well. It used to be 20 to 25 hotter than the others (345-350 vs 325) now it's 30 to 35. Is this a cause for concern? Thanks guys!
  8. May I ask what symptoms are you experiencing?
  9. I know it's bit too late but does Garmin offer free subscriptions ? @DualRatedFlyer do you have links on Avidyne or Jeppesen s website that says 60 day free subscription? Thanks!
  10. Just finished my IFD 440 install and is keen to try out IFD100 App. Does anyone know if a brand new IFD comes with, say, 1 year free Jeppesen subscription? Thanks Tom
  11. I am putting an IFD 440 for my 1981 J with KFC200. If I am to go down the dual G5 plus GFC500 digital AP in the future, what functions / features will I gain if I were to choose GTN650 instead?
  12. What is surprising is not that the Chair of Transportation Committee is banging an airline lobbyist, it's the fact that you American didn't rise up and put an end to his political career. Funny how democracy works differently in different country... Anyway, glad this second attempt of his was also shelved but it must be bloody tiring for EAA and AOPA trying to keep their eyes on this shoddy character's every move.
  13. Looking at KI209 a bit further now. Looks like there is also an A version plus a different kind of connector too. Does anyone know what're the differences? What goes well with 175BE?
  14. Hey Mike can I ask how do you work out if there are any significant convective activities before plunging into the cloud?
  15. Pretty sure they do talk to each other. I have asked my shop to pre-wire my IFD 440 for G% in the future. I
  16. Hijacking or reviving this thread! I am in the process of getting an IFD440 now and intended to keep my trusty KX175BE with Mac1700 conversion. In order to keep VOR and ILS working do I need a second CDI with glidescope? If so what would you guys recommend?
  17. So it's better to reduce RPM than reducing Manifold? The way I see it is that get to 1000ft as quickly as you possibly can without frying the engine so you have options. It would be nice to know what is the best / least harmful way to climb but I am afraid many theories simply lack empirical evidences. The only objective measurement that you have is CHT. Even that is an indirect measurement of the beating that your engine is taking.
  18. New battery in RG35-AXC! I swear the starter cranked with more determination than before especially on the hot start! Hopefully it will last!
  19. The shop told me that they have got some on the shelf and the DOM is August 2017. Is that too old for sealed battery? Do I have to do weight and balance after battery replacement??
  20. Excellent! I do fly long XC (5 hours each time) guess those extra amp hours may come handy but there are no difference in terms of charge delivery during cranking, right? I had replaced battery before in my car and it doesn't seem to very difficult at all. Can a pilot carry out battery replacement?
  21. Thanks Clarence! May I ask what's the difference between A Concorde RG35A and AXC version?
  22. I think it's time for me to get a new battery as it's not holding charges well. I have a 81 J and it's 12V system I am interested in buy a sealed battery and what would you guys recommend? Also, if I buy a sealed battery, do I need to get rid of the battery box because the battery won't fit? Lastly, what's the shelf life of a sealed battery? Thanks everyone!
  23. I am based in Brisbane. I did email the guy but yet to hear back from him. It is Easter here. Sounds like potentially a big job. If I don't need elevator rigging, do I still need to life the plane?
  24. The ball is ever so slightly swung to the right (I think the ball is just ouching the right center line) The yoke is tilting left ward and the aileron on the left wing is up-deflected a bit. The plane will hold straight and level but only in this configuration. I am wondering if it's the rudder alignment is out. Will definitely get the rigging boards! Good thought on the flap but as far as I can tell they are full retracted. I am not sure if I am happy to rig the flap as a solution, which also likely has its own aerodynamic penalty!.
  25. So my plane is finally getting its well-deserved panel upgrade next month and I thought it might be a good opportunity to get something done about one thing that is bugging me for a while since the belly panel is going to come off. It seems like my plane only flies straight and level with small degree L) aileron deflection. I figure it's probably to do with the rudder being deflected to the right. It seems getting worse now and I feel like I am flying in ever so slight sideslip and am paying some aerodynamic penalty for this. Does anyone have this problem before and is able to shed some light on this for me please? Thanks guys! Tommy ps. The A&E did notice there is some slack in the aileron control rod towards the left last annual but elected to leave it alone.
