RJBrown Posted June 14, 2012 Report Posted June 14, 2012 What aluminum alloy does Mooney use on the wing skins and how thick is it? Are the formed aluminum pieces such as gear doors etc a different alloy?
jetdriven Posted June 14, 2012 Report Posted June 14, 2012 Per the SMM, the ribs, skins, and doublers are 2024 T3, T4, or T42 aluminum alloy. I cannot find data, but the doors feel like 2024-t3. as well. The fuel tank area is .050 and .040 in the fuel tank area, then .032 and then .025 in the wing tip area. photo enclosed.
Steve Dawson Posted June 14, 2012 Report Posted June 14, 2012 Just curious, but aren't the wing skins on the Ovation Bravo and Acclaim thicker?
N601RX Posted June 14, 2012 Report Posted June 14, 2012 I'm pretty sure Mooney purchases the 2024 in the T0 or annealed condition for the gear doors. They form it 1st and then send it out to be heat treated and aged to the T4 condition. It doesn't form that well in the T3 or T4 condition and is prone to crack if complex forming is done in that condition.
