Although the controller is trying to be helpful, I’m pretty certain if you “cancel IFR”……..it’s cancelled. Not really a request….but i understand why the controller was uncomfortable. Lots of reasons to be uncomfortable with that exchange. However, in the Delta he just needed 3 miles of vis and clear of clouds. Not sure of the visibility that day, but he was lucky to have 1900’ ceilings. KMRB is in a pretty rural area and fairly easy to see. Quote

Assuming the owner is the pilot, as pointed out by Mark in the other thread, there is no record of an instrument rating. I am betting you are correct. The whole situation reminded me of this one, where the guy lies about being IFR capable as well as stupid piled on more stupidity: and this one, (about 6 minutes in): and at least one more of these videos. Is there any recourse? Do you think the FAA is on to him? exactly, a big threat to us all. The controller should have turned him in Quote

When I was working to finish the rating in 2018 after buying our Mooney, my instructor asked me "Why don't you refer to the moving maps?" I replied "Because it seems like cheating to me". He said "cheat." In other words, anything that helps with SA is a good thing. Over-reliance on moving maps is surely bad, at the expense of developing good SA between the ears. there is a fine line, same situation with the AP. Need to master it while not losing your ability to hand fly. Quote
