Guys,

Every once in a great while I get a call from ATC or local approach control that my transponder is not working.  When I say once in a great while I mean like once every 20 hours of flying....

It happened earlier this week and I noticed that my AltiTrak (dont use it at all) started chirping.  In talking to one of my buddies we think that the blind encoder might be on the fritz being that both systems appear to be knocked out at the same time and both of them are tied to the encoder (we think).  Is this train of thought correct?

Thanks.

It is worth asking ATC if they have your Mode "A".  This is the code of your transponder.  If they have your code, but not Mode C (altitude) then you are on the right track.  However, with an encoder, it could be as simple as the ground wire that is common for the gray code.
