Northern Mooniac Posted November 16, 2017 Report Posted November 16, 2017 Well, here I am sitting here, much more educated about flying and aircraft since buying my first plane. I thought because I live in canada, with our winters, TKS would be a must even though it's not fiki. Since finishing my ifr course (just studying to go write) i'm quickly learning that there are quite a few days that I probably wouldn't go because of icing. Most of my flights are 1-2 hours with a ice layer of 4000asl to 16000 asl. we sit at about 1900agl. Alot of that is generally layers but even still not worth the battle with tks. Because I use the plane 80% for work, i'm starting to think about a better all weather plane. something that could handle 1-2 hours in light ice. ie. heated windshield, heated prop and boots. Any suggestions?

There are single engine FIKI options but not as many as what you would find in the twin class.
Northern Mooniac Posted November 16, 2017 Author Report Posted November 16, 2017 yeah thats kind of what i'm afraid of. even going to a piper matrix or something like that. Maybe just have to talk the wife into a TBM850 and just get it over with lol

Any suggestions? You are starting to run into the realm of piston twins and turbines at that point and all with a price tag on acquisition, insurance and operating cost. Being mountainous out your way I’m doubting you’d want to be going the single engine engine IFR route however the Malibu or C210 family would suit your needs. A C310 does well in the winter as does the Navajo workhorse. If you can find one with an STC for the heat off the exhaust instead of the janitrol even better. If you have the cash my choice in twin would be the C340A, for the speed, FIKI, and pressurized comfort. The bigger Cessna become pricy but also present themselves with leasing opportunities. The 421’s have geared engines = $$$ come overhaul time or with hamfisted operators. Nice machine though. Where are you typically flying for work?MikeSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Northern Mooniac Posted November 16, 2017 Author Report Posted November 16, 2017 I'm based in Regina, Sask. Usually out to swift current, saskatoon, swift current, prince albert and estevan. For as often as we DO go, I don't think I can justfiy the cost right now, i'll just end up driving more.

Northern Mooniac Posted November 16, 2017 Author Report Posted November 16, 2017 yeah I can only imagine. I do want to upgrade my 231 to an ovation or a bonanza so I have a little more room for cargo etc, but it always comes at a cost. a 252 with a rocket conversion and fiki would really be my idea plane. Sometimes life is just tough!

mooneyspeed Posted November 16, 2017 Report Posted November 16, 2017 ah, you probably see me parked in YYN often then, the inlaws are out there so we frequent the area. Being nice and flat out there those ceilings are usually high enough to go VFR even on the marginal days, with lots of room to turn back if it craps out on ya. This last week as been pretty dismal though. Once the air masses get settled in about a month its going to be clear and cold 85% of the time too. It'd be interesting to see how much the days allow you to go/scrub if you end up keeping track.
