N9240M Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 Those of you who have replaced windows yourselves....what kind of hinge did you use for the vent window? My old hinges are cruddy and rusty, don't want to reuse them. Aircraft Spruce sells a "Piper and Mooney" hinge kit for $124. Give me a freakin break. They're plastic hinges. LP Aero does not offer a hinge kit for Mooney specifically, but using their Piper part number, I can get that for $49 through Air Parts Co locally. Might actually be the same one that Spruce sells for more than twice the price? Are there any suitable home grown hinge/latch recommendations? The windows are stock thickness LP Aero windows, so there's a 1/8" step from window surface to vent window surface, necessitating an offset hinge line (or a washer/filler). Quote
GeorgePerry Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 I went through the same debate...Ended up buying the LP hinge kit specifically for the mooney. It's a nice product Quote
TurboExec Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 How cruddy and rusty are they? Sandblast them, clean them and finish them up right and reuse them....That is what I would do cause I wouldn't spend no $124 on a hinge. Quote
N9240M Posted March 6, 2009 Author Report Posted March 6, 2009 George, I called LP directly and they said they don't have anything for Mooney at all. They do make them for Piper and Beechcraft...was yours the Piper part, by chance? Aircraft Spruce's part says "Piper and Mooney", but they don't say that it's an LP product. Unless I find something slick and cheap in the next week or so, I'll probably just try blast and paint my old ones. PS - George, I'm having my seats reupholstered right now and I printed off a picture of your interior as the model to copy. The front seats will be sculpted entirely out of the Confor Foam, but the back seat will just be standard aircraft seat foam. I'm in the process of cutting out some nice new wool carpet on the living room floor tonight too. Quote
GeorgePerry Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 I gave you some bad gouge...I looked at LP but ended up going with Great Lakes Aero...try calling these guys. I am not absolutely sure but I believe the Mooney and Piper parts are one in the same. They sell the the vent window w/ hardware. Sorry for the confusion, it's been a while http://www.glapinc.com/Mooney/M20FG/m20f-1968.htm Quote
N9240M Posted March 6, 2009 Author Report Posted March 6, 2009 Well, I've already got the LP windows and vent window...all I need is the latch and hinges. LP makes one for Piper that I can get for $49 through Airparts, but I might just see how well mine clean up before spending any more money. It's not an obscene amount of money in absolute dollars, but for two plastic hinges and a plastic latch, it's still a bit absurd. More so that Aircraft Spruce gets $124 for them, and Great Lakes' Beech kit is $185 for the same thing. This "rich aircraft owner" concept is really starting to hurt! Quote
