Zibolsk1 Posted April 3, 2015 Report Posted April 3, 2015 Looking for ideas. I had the aircraft in the shop for several maintenance items including new baffles. When I test flew it today I could not keep the number 4 cylinder in check with out reducing power and running rich . The new baffles are definitely suspect. Looking for any other ideas. I believe the probe to be accurate. Number 4 is 50 to 60 degrees hotter than the rest. Help Quote
garysuperpilot Posted April 3, 2015 Report Posted April 3, 2015 This is probably not going to help you but I'll be interested to find out the cause. I just overheated my number 4 cylinder and had to replace the rings and piston. I only have a single probe cht so wasn't aware of it till I started having a problem. My understanding is that #4 is usually one of the "cooler" running cylinders. Maybe not. We could not find a cause for my problem and with only a little over 100smoh a little troubling. I'm purchasing an engine analyzer and hopefully won't have an issue arise unexpectedly. I do have an F model so it may not be that relevant . Quote
carl Posted April 3, 2015 Report Posted April 3, 2015 One CHT hotter than the rest. are there EGTs changes? possible causes --- Misplaced broken engine baffles --- broken ring --- exhaust leak hitting CHT probe --- Detonation -- pre-ignition my guess is clogged injector , but im just reading this stuff. Oscar Avalle Posted April 3, 2015 Report Posted April 3, 2015 There are many articles on this forum about this issue. I have not been able to find a solution that satisfies me and that brings the CHT (in my case number 3) below 400 in climb. My suggestion to you look at the baffles make sure that everything is OK, but buy an engine analyzer and keep the CHTs in line with the techniques that have been shared by many in this forum (climb at 120 mph etc.). carusoam Posted April 3, 2015 Report Posted April 3, 2015 Keep in mind the OP has a 6 cylinder TC'd Lycoming... -a- Quote
Zibolsk1 Posted April 4, 2015 Author Report Posted April 4, 2015 Thanks for the feed back. I do have a jpi 730 installed. EGT's appear to be consistent. Quote
carl Posted April 4, 2015 Report Posted April 4, 2015 rule these out detonation should hava a drop egt pre ignition should have a rise in egt left with broken ring -- perfrom a compression test exhaust gas leak -- look for cracks, brown exhaust gas stains baffling . baffling isn't it? Quote
Zibolsk1 Posted April 6, 2015 Author Report Posted April 6, 2015 Compression check and baffle check tomorrow. Thanks Quote
