  1. So I have a Precision Vertical Card Compass that is showing very large deviations on certain headings not accounted for by the compass deviation card. It agrees with the card on other headings. I need to get a working compass before my IR check ride so I can practice compass turns. I think the unit is around 7 years old and predates my purchase of the aircraft but it was calibrated ~2 years ago when my panel was redone. It was true to the deviation card at that time, and it has the correction balls permanently glued in position. I'm not sure when or why it started malfunctioning, but I wonder if it's wear in the unit itself given that nothing else has changed in the past two years. Which of the below options would you suggest: 1. Attempt to recalibrate the existing vertical card compass before deciding to overhaul or replace. Maybe install a new set of balls. 2. Overhaul or replace the vertical card compass, get new balls, calibrate. 3. Junk the vertical card compass, install a S.I.R.S. compass which is harder to read but should be more bulletproof? I hate wasting time on these recurring maintenance minutiae. I don't want to waste A&P hours trying to get a compass to work that may need replacement anyway. What's the likelihood of getting it to work? Do these vertical compasses tend to wear out and fail? If I'm replacing should I go with the simpler option even if harder to read? Appreciate any experience and insight in this area. Thanks!!
  2. I have a vertical card compass in my J. Picture attached. We did some recent panel work and the glare shield was removed. After picking the plane up we noticed that the compass did not read correctly. Presumably the displacement was caused when the compass was hit when removing the glare shield. I know the little white balls on each side help "balance" the compass because of the amount of metal int he Mooney, but I am not sure exactly how to re-calibrate the compass. There are two small screws in the bottom of the compass card that I assume are used to re-calibrate. Is this something I can do or do I need a mechanic. If I can do it, any helpful hints, youtube video of this being done or other suggestions are welcome.
  3. All: I want to replace my old compass on my 78J - the plastic airpath housing constantly cracks, and the compass always needs maintenance for leaks. I have heard the SIRS might be a good replacement (see below), but it appears the whole pattern won't match what is there on the existing cage bar member where the existing airpath compass is. Any ideas or suggestions would be welcomed. Joe Allen Mpls 78J
  4. After installing and calibrating my PAI-700 vertical card compass (and being a bit anal to detail), I duplicated the old circa 1981 card and sized it to fit under the old plastic cover. I thought I would share the file for anyone that might have swapped out their wet compass and installed a PAI-700 or other style compass and have the same plastic cover type mount. I would ask if anyone knows a source for the plastic cover itself, as you can see mine is a bit discolored from the years...I would love to replace it. I've attached some pictures of the project.
  5. I am looking for one of these mounting brackets for this style compass. Why my instructor made it very clear why I need to ensure both seats are all the way back before getting in. Easier on the forehead as well :-P Keep in mind, I'm still new. I am hoping I can buy a bracket by itself and that I don't have to replace the whole thing.
  6. My fellow Mooniacs, I am cleaning out the hangar and have a few things for sale. All of the parts listed are brand new sealed in original packaging, except for the Whelen NAV/Strobe light system. My loss is your gain. PM me if you have any questions. 7. Has anyone installed a Precision Avionics, Inc. PAI-700 with the PACMO-VMN custom mount? Lighting 28V, 14V, 5V, or no light? Would the PAI-700 with the PACMO-VMN box section windscreen divider mount and 14V lighting be an appropriate replacement for the windscreen-mounted and lighted whiskey compass in my 1966 M20C S/N:3261?
  8. I'm based at KTBN in east-central Missouri. Can anyone recommend a nearby authorized repair station to install and swing a new vertical card magnetic compass to replace the faltering windscreen divider mounted "whiskey" compass in my 1966 M20C? A nearby airport with a surveyed and calibrated compass rose? Master compass? Transit-pelorus? Advice? Concerns?
