  1. March 2013 Aviation Consumer magazine asked essentially these questions. Porosity on both noted at 40microns. The magnet of the Tempest gave it the deciding vote, with the caveat raised that the magnet might make cut-open filter analysis more difficult to interpret and (more concerning to me) the theoretical concern that the concentration of metal at the magnet could force the bypass valve open on the Tempest..
  2. Found it, did it. Thanks!
  3. Some forums ask for donations from members to avoid ads. Flagging a users name w a "2013 Forum Supporter" flag seems to encourage donations. I'm ready to donate, anyone else?
  4. Indeed it is!
  5. Pics? Price? Listed?
  6. Now that's (last few posts) the kind of useful input I was looking for. Thanks
  7. .....and, as you can see, simple things like quoting previous posts are unfamiliar.
  8. No, that is why I asked the original question. Searches under a number of search terms never really addressed the issue of low time, infrequent useage. Your input is appreciated and links to the appropriate earlier discussions you allude to would be also. I've not been following this board for long.

  10. Thanks for all the input and the link. Overall I'm impressed by abscence of horror stories from infrequent flying.
  11. No, no...he's not dead! He's, he's restin'! per Monty Python
  12. Advantage to the timing of coming up on TBO soon I presume?
  13. First, my apologies if this has been beaten to death in the past, but a search led me nowhere; so here goes: I see alot of comments here about avoiding AC which have been infrequently flown. Can someone summarize why please? Gasket/seal deterioration? Cylinder rust? Fuel tank deterioration? Something else? If an AC has had appropriate annuals and excellent compressions, does this reassure? Thanks in advance Bill
  14. This reference does discuss other means of power control in event of stuck throttle: carb heat on, magnetos, mixture lean, increase prop pitch, electrical switches on (?); his opinion is that cycling mags in landing approach results in better control and that mag on can more readily give a momentary boost of power late in final or if go around needed....he does say to anticipate the backfire and not to let it distract you. As my CFI tells me: at this point the insurance company likely owns the plane anyway, do what you need to do. A historical side note from Stowell: "Before airplane engines were equipped with throttles and mixtures, power was controlled by turning magnetos off and on". Anyone confirm this?
  15. Interesting, I just read about power management with magneto control in Rich Stowell's excellent book Emergency Maneuver Training (chapter 11, p175) where he describes power management by switching on and off the magnetos in the event of loss of throttle control.. Describes a technique of Stepped Descent on final using the mags. This is a great read BTW
  16. Stop it already! As a 26 hr PPL student this is the stuff I dream of! Should've done it much earlier in life - I'll be 60 in ten days. Better late than never! Bill in the Carolinas
  17. Huh? Just for future reference: http://visitcedarkey.com/cedar-key-restaurants.html and: http://gulfkartcompany.com/ No fuel; runway has been approved for resurfacing in 2013. Meeting room? (scratching head and walking away)
  18. Post some pics if it gets done, please.. Hope someday soon to spend a fair amount of time at CDK....this could become an annual thing in the future w burgers on the deck (although there are lots of places to eat in CDK) at Island Oaks. Have fun, Bill
  19. Thanks one and all for your well thought out responses! Sounds like my desire for ownership is a bit premature. Patience, I'm told, is a virtue. To bring y'all up to speed on where I am and where I'm coming from: live in Chester, SC; approx 20hrs into Part 141 training at WNC Aviation in Asheville, NC. I've been lurking on MooneySpace for about 8mos now. Mooney ownership seems to fit my dreams of the future to travel about the country - hope to soon (at retirement) do the SnowBird thing between the NC mountains and our recently acquired vacation home within 100 yards of KCDK on Cedar Key, FL (currently available for short term rental - see www.islandoaks.net - if any of y'all are interested -SPAM?, sorry). Have found MooneySpace an informative and supportive locale. Hope to meet some of y'all in the future. Bill (the Other Dr Bill, I guess)
  20. Anyone here have experience or suggestion r.e. the pro's/con's of AC purchase during training for PPL? Certainly would mitigate rental costs..but could insurance be obtained particularly for the solo portion of the training? Would a Complex ticket be issued at the check ride as well? Any and all thoughts/recommendations/harangues welcomed. Thanks, Bill in SC
  21. Not trying to be too "Spam-like", but my vacation home on Cedar Key is available for rentals and is within 100 yards of KCDK.. Information at www.islandoaks.net. Hope to land there sometime soon myself - PPL student at approx 20 hours, with dreams of M20F ownership.
  22. Helicopters can't really fly - they're simply so ugly, they're rejected by the Earth.
