The regs exemption from the min 500’/1000’ altitudes is ONLY for the purpose of take off & landing. And when these guys are announcing in the pattern they’re doing a low pass, they don’t have any intention of landing. Also, a normal go around procedure usually doesn’t require you fly down the entire length of the RW at 20’.

Don’t mean to be an old fuddy-duddy, but I guess it’s too late. There has been a growing number of low pass, often “high speed” fly by’s at my non towered airport. Which is surrounded by dense housing developments (SoCal). A contagious case of monkey see, monkey do. Can anybody show me in the regs where this is legal, other than an FAA approved airshow?? -Joe

Thanks guys!

OK thanks. Cable to indicator in cockpit could need lube, maybe.

Hi, Have a 1994 201J. 1640TT. Electric Globe cowl flap motor removed for overhaul by Allied Motion in AL, I guess. (Was occasionally tripping breaker, now will only run for <1 sec and trips breaker; both directions. Slight burnt elec odor from motor when disassembled. Checked & cleaned connections). Anyway, with the motor out, how much resistance should be on the cowl flap rigging? Maintenance Manual 71-13-02 doesn't mention. Mine seems to have resistance in both directions. Maybe 3-4 pounds worth? I realize air resistance to open flaps is probably more, but just wondering if too much caused motor to wear? BTW, are shops & mechanics everywhere in the country as busy as they are here in SoCal? Wow. Frustrating. Thanks!!! -Joe KCCB

Guess I wasn't clear. New one already purchased and installed! After 7 yrs & a few signs, it was time. Not gonna mess with tests that will just prove the obvious. Just impressed on the longevity of the battery. And for $612, hope the new one lasts as long!
-
$612 with tax for a new one for my 24V J. Word is out how long these things have been lasting, & the prices are up accordingly. Old one almost 7 yrs old. No tender, but regularly flown & FL & CA it's life. Sat 10 days or so last month & start power wasn't crisp. JPI shows 23.1V after sitting 3 days in mild wx. But paranoid about getting stuck. Plus want to have a strong batt if alt quits IFR. 4/11 install of old one ⬇️

Hi! The Hartzell vibrated & was louder in the cabin on the first first flight. Not a grease issue. On shutdown, the Hartzell stopped in a different place than the McCauley. No coincidence. I have 200+ hrs on the new McCauley (factory equipment model) & is smooth and quiet!! Love it. YMMV -Joe '94 201J

I'm volunteering a little time at the Pilots-N-Paws booth Saturday (#11 in Exhibition Hall). I've heard some disaster stories of departing in the pm of the final day at past events; like 4+ hours to get off the ground. Anyone have fly-in experience regarding this? Guess I could park at OXR & Uber over..... -
On a related note, anybody know what kind of port this is? I've asked everyone. It's presumably for the JPI 700.

This is what I'm seeing. Climbing out of 2000' MSL, full everything, boost pump still on. Fuel flow (left side of display) quickly drops from 18.1 gph to 17.6 gph. Only 1/2 gph this time, but sometimes >1 gph. Corresponding rise in all EGT's. Stabilizes there, usually, then slowly reduces with altitude, as per usual. I'm beginning to think I'm over analyzing this phenomenon. IMG_8211.MOV

My shop, via speaking with Lycoming & Bendix, are talking about running a pressure test on the pumps. I guess we'll go ahead with that, thanks. I highly doubt fuel's vaporizing. Cool OAT & my plane runs cool; <330 CHT & <180 oil temp in climb in winter @ 105 KIAS.
-
It would seem obvious to suspect the fuel pump. But wouldn't turning on the electric boost restore the fuel flow if the engine pump's output was low? In my case, elec pump does not change the fuel flow.
-
The pumps are not leaking any fuel. It's not a gauge prob as I am getting corresponding EGT rise w drop in ff. I don't believe it's fuel vaporizing in the lines, as it really doesn't do it in cruise or at low fuel flow settings. The mixture knob is not moving & the linkage is tight. But it definitely could be air getting in at the fuel selector valve I guess. I tried to eliminate the fuel servo by overhauling it, which primarily does the fuel metering, etc. Sorry no data. JPI but nobody knows where the data port is located. Thanks!
-
Thanks Robert. Problem is, mine drops exponentially. It's an immediate loss of 1-1.5 gph in a matter of seconds. Then sometimes rises back up while still climbing.
-
Thanks Yetti. Did this test. Holds pressure for a long time. Plus, when I get the drop in fuel flow during climb, turning the elec boost ON has zero effect on the fuel flow. The system doesn't seem to be lacking pressure.
-
I will add, it's never run better; except for the fuel flow fluctuation. Starts in a 1/2 blade turn, well balanced fuel flow/runs very smoothly LOP, inflight mag checks perfect, idles great at 700 rpm w throttle full aft and about 0 MAP, etc. I just don't want the fuel flow to "fluctuate" to 0 one day!

I've read other threads relating to this issue. '94J IO-360. 1550 TTSN. Full pwr TO at 1400' MSL, 55 degrees OAT, elec boost pump on, I'm getting 18.4 gph. BUT, at about 2000'-2500' MSL climbing out, the fuel flow (Shadin) will drop from 18.4 to 17-17.4 gph (1-1.4 gph) in about 5 seconds without me touching anything. All EGT's rise with fuel flow drop. Sometimes flow will rise back to 17.8 gph or so after a couple minutes, sometimes not. Fuel pressure rock steady at 25 psi. in almost all phases of flight. Press slightly higher w boost on. GPH drop occurs w either tank selected, and with elec boost pump on OR off. Turning boost on after the drop does NOT restore fuel flow. Happens with full tanks, or 1/4 tanks. Just OH'd fuel servo & have exact same results. Injectors recently cleaned. Fuel flow usually steady in cruise. WTF, over?? Thanks, -Joe N49GH

Compatibility issues are definitely a concern dealing with different manufacturers. Sometimes even hard to get a straight answer from the manufacturer! I guess "compatibility" is what Garmin is selling. But then you have to get stuff that works with Garmin! Lol

I'm still happy with my FreeFlight XVR ADS-B in/out with wifi to the iPad running Wing X. 1 1/2+ years in service. I've since replaced nav/com 2 with a 430W, below the 530W. I can put the traffic page on the 430 if I'm using the iPad for something else. Easy to spot targets on the 430 traffic page, also.

Oh, Precise Flight. Mine is original Mooney. I'll call PF & see if their o-rings are compatable. Thanks!!

Anybody ever overhaul the Alternate Static Air Valve or find a seal kit for it? Valve p/n 87-5186 or p/n A1390. Mines leaking & won't pass 24/mo "IFR". '94 -J. -Joe
