Yes, because once the companies are no longer required to comply with safety regulations, they will continue them out of the goodness of their hearts. See the industrial accident rates before OSHA. Worker fatality used to be close to 40 per year per 100,000 workers prior of OSHA, now it's down to 8 or so. And I do not appreciate threats about kicking my ass in private messages. Basically shows your mindset is one of a simpleton and/or moron. But that's to be expected. I am Jack's complete lack of surprise.

I'm still trying to reconcile how you can view the world so black and white and yet work for a safety management division of an insurance company. Your entire existence depends on vast array of government regulations, a sue happy legal system and the pesky Wall Street and the evil reserve bankers. The only ASS I ever see on this forum is you, Sir. As to asking me what I do, I am a minority owner an insurance company and a majority owner of a software company. Yes, both of the enterprises suck heavily on government tit.

Well, it proves one thing: safety in automobile design has gone up tremendously over the years. If you look at the stats (like I do all the time working in insurance), the fatality rate in similar collisions is down six fold between 1950's and now. Airbags, crumple zones, high strength steel, soft padding, collapsible steering wheels, make a ton of difference. They are always first available in the S class, BMW 7 series, Volvo 900/800 and then trickles down by government/insurance mandates. I love old cars too, old motorcycles even more. Shiat, I fly a Bravo, with fatality rate of 3 in 100 built so far. However, my daily drivers are always bought with crash ratings in mind. My toys, not so much.

Well, it appears just as liberals always in the end end up ruling over disgruntled conservatives, the Sunnis are apparently meant to rule over Shia's. Of course, if the prior president ever opened a book other than "My Pet Goat" and spent a day looking at map, he'd realize that countries with borders drawn with rulers by a drunken Brit were not meant to be stable. And no, Berry did not abandoned Iraq, Iraq failed to extend the status of forces agreement and essentially reserved a right to prosecute our soldiers in their courts. So we left. Thanks God. Let that shiathole get spit into 3 countries it was always meant to be. It will keep the Iranians busy for next 20 years and off our asses.

There is a company that has a lot of room to talk. The valve seat job on most continental cylinders looks like it was ground by a 3 year with a dremel. Quite frankly, having have read the article, while obviously over hyped, it presented nothing that was not factually correct. Cessna's seat rails have been a know problem for years before Cessna got slapped with the giant verdict and cleaned up their act and don't even get me started on good old Frank Robinson and his way of doing business and his attitude towards any sort of safety innovation. Of course, that attitude permeates the entire GA community, as multiple threads on multiple forums refer to CAPS as a crutch. And nobody says corporations are bad in themselves, but clearly, when not regulated, inspected, and fined the crap out of when they don't comply, we'd still have 10 year old losing their fingers daily in machines. That's the natural order of things.

It was a bit tongue in cheek. I was referring to the comment that states that welding (in oil/gas fields I assume based on salaries posted) is somehow more "real value" than working in finance. It takes both to extract gas/oil...And insurance, a ton of insurance. Most here are always dreaming of simpler, easier times when men were men and sheep were scared, or something along them lines. Truth is we need both welders and Ivy Leaguer's to make the world go around. Can't drill for oil/gas without lawyers, insurance, capital and derivative markets. I mean you can I guess, but not very profitably. And contrary to some here who apparently never left their little corner of their state, there is no left wing in American politics: there is right wing (the democratic party), and ultra right wing (the republican party), and then the people who believe in unicorns (tea party). You want to see left wing, go to Europe.

It depends very much on the propeller. With the Hartzell 3 blade, they are very much a 185knot aircraft. As to the useful load, I've seen Eagles (I was going to buy one but it had damage history) with TKS and still pushing 1100lb. The worst Ovations are the ones with the 3 blades from McCauley. $4K for R&R, $6K for prop, $10K for engine, there is $20K. And yes, insurance does fix your bent engine bits...

That's a terrible, terrible idea. Tracking aircraft expenses that is. It's priceless, the experience that is. I have not flown in months, being busy with work and house projects (my other job for another few months before my down to studs remodel is over). Last few weeks really felt like hell, I was really about to lose my marbles. Buddy of mine called me yesterday and asked how long it's been since my last flight, I said months. He tried to get me to go yesterday and I weaseled out. He called again this morning and simply told me that I was to report to the airport by 11am. Reluctantly I did, but man was I grumpy when I got there. I had things to do, wires to route in the basement. Well, just landed, hour and half of solid IFR, good BBQ for lunch, two departures, two approaches. Feeling great. You can't put a price on that. But, yes, excel works great for me. I just don't use the sum function, my accountant does, but doesn't tell me ;-)

What are fuel gauges and who uses them? You have EI fuel flow totalizer, why even bother looking at anything else. Put it 64 gallons, burn 54, land, rinse, repeat.

Your airplane is perfectly airworthy. The only thing required for that is an annual entry within prior 12 months. You are completely within your rights to toss out all prior logbooks out of the window and fly the aircraft.

So true, so true. Funny how one little mod made what maybe was the worst high altitude piston turbo engine into what I think is one of the best: oil cooled valve guides. Looking over my logbooks, at 3600 hours my Bravo has never had a cylinder issue. Just the damn camshaft... -

If you're going to go the Cessna 400 route, just go all out an buy a Lancair IV-P, twice the speed for the same money ;-) Just pray the engine don't quit and never, ever get below 100knots indicated unless over the numbers, at 50 feet. And it doesn't hurt of have David Morss as a copilot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0txEC0Rhdg I love that instant pitch up to slow the engine down and stop it from tearing off the mounts. Guy is like a machine. -
There is no such thing as a reasonable autopilot upgrade in the certified world. The best of the little ones, STEC 30 with a GPSS will set you back about $15K installed.

I think the problem is quite the opposite. Many more would be alive had they pulled the chute. Pull early, pull often. Nobody ever died pulling the chute within design parameters. Many have died attempting an engine out landing. -
