  1. What about the fact that flying higher you are also going slower. Not only is the air thinner but your indicated airspeed goes down (even though the true airspeed may have gone up). Also if the temp/pressure change, because of density altitude it could be that it was 3000ft difference between the two flights and not 1000. Just some thoughts.
  2. Interesting question. If I may add another question to yours, how does altitude or density altitude affect cooling? To me it seems that above a certain altitude, even though OAT continues to drop, CHT/OT actually increase. I suspect that the thinner air provide poorer cooling? Can anyone support or disprove this? I am postulating that the change in altitude and temperature played a role. BTW how did you set power/mixture for each flight? A difference in mixture can easily play that much of a role.

  5. I'll stick to flying the airplane regularly method. It may be expensive but it's tried and true.
  6. I agree. I end up only using the electric trim on landing or go around but prefer the manual trim all around. However, the electric trim is a life saver on approach cause it allows me to use my right hand to lower flaps while simultaneously keeping my left hand on the yoke while running the electric trim to adjust for flaps. Likewise on a go around I can keep my hands on stick/throttle while retrimming with electric. For takeoff, level off, and cruise, the manual trim gives much better feedback and seems better to use.
  7. Besides Byron, has anyone witnessed any speed impact by adjusting magneto timing? How much and on what model/engine? Fuel savings or LOP improvement?

As ambassador of the New Jersey Mooney Pilots group, I'll offer to take you up for a ride in mine once it gets out of the shop (couple more weeks, getting a mags upgrade ) if you will listen to my pitch why you should totally get one but not for a while. Good luck landing a Mooney into solberg is all I'll say for now

  10. Don't worry, even the guys who say they understand LOP vs ROP don't really. You're in luck cause your plane has already chosen for you the way to fly so you don't have to. ROP is going to be the way to go. Have fun!

  13. I believe that is called decalage and that all airplanes have it to some extent.
  14. Ah ok. Now I see that there is a difference between seeing the airport and seeing the runway. I was kind of thinking them as one and the same until I reread the details above and in the AIM.

  18. This is an interesting theory, plausible, and possibly true. But... why don't we see this on more airplanes then!? I would guess the 172 (cheap trainers) or other low volume planes would have this. If your theory is true, then I would expect this tail type to be the norm and the fancy bent tail to be the rarity.
  19. I got mine to concede that LOP is not harmful IF the fuel injection were accurately balanced and IF the temperatures were cool enough but he wouldn't recommend it anyway. That's a major victory in my opinion because my GAMI spread is 0.0 and LOP keeps my CHTs below 350 a lot of the time What demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding further is that he thinks (and I think many mechs/pilots do) is that LOP runs the engine hotter. But this is simply untrue. Forget looking at graphs and talking theory, I can clearly see lower CHTs flying a little LOP compared to flying 100ROP! I think if LOP was the more fuel costly way to fly, you'd have a hard time convincing me to go ROP instead. Now it's not only about fuel savings but that it's simply a cooler (pun intended) way of running the engine
  20. Not sure how it works for your M10J, but on my 201 things are quite different than the book claims. First of all best power can yield 1-5 knots speed increase over economy (peak I'm assuming). But the bigger issue is cooling. Most likely you will NOT be flying 75% power at peak and maintaining CHTs below 380. Thus you will have to choose between spending 13GPH going 100+ROP to get the temps down or 10GPH or less LOP. Oh shucks, here we go again!
  21. Ok, so what's the deal with the Monoey vertical stabilizer? What's the thinking behind it? Here's my theory. By having the leading edge vertical and the trailing edge tapered, it actually provides more rudder authority with a lower forward facing drag profile. I think if you'd measure the leading edge of the Mooney vertical stabilizer compared to that of other planes, it would come out noticeably less. The slanted ones have to add surface area for all the extra surface from being slanted. Think hyoptenuse. Yet the Mooney enjoys a bigger rudder this way because the slant on the rudder provides more surface area (tall) rather than having a deeper rudder which makes more drag in the turns. What do you think?

I guess it might be a good measure to leave the windshield heater on for a long time prior to entering IMC in winter so that if it's warm enough that it doesn't ice to begin with you'll be in better shape. Most likely you're only transitioning layers rather than staying in it for too long so if you can prevent the buildup in the first place, it's a lot easier than melting it off later.
