  2. Quote: urban_rich Looks like Great Lakes Aero has 201 windshields, will this work with the SWTA STC? Will SWTA sell the STC without the windshield? Coul this be an option. Rich
  3. Quote: aerobat95 How many are needed before he can get the parts??
  4. Quote: aerobat95 I too have done an extensive search for a 201 Mod for my '74F. What I have found is there are no kits available from anyone. Lasar does not have the cowl deck and will not get any new ones in as long as Mooney is not making parts. SWTA does not have any and will no get any more in due to costs. I think as our planes get older we are going to see less and less mods available for them. If you look at my gallery I have a one peice windshield on mine. Looks much better than the 2 piece. I was also told by a MSC in Texas that the 201 while it looks good is not really worth the cost. There is not a huge speed increase...maybe 2-3 knots....the way he put it was take the 6-7K and invest in the panel. I also looked into trying to get a field approval for a 201 install and have been told by numerous people that the FAA is very reluctlant giving them out and one A&P IA said they are talking about doing away with them all together in the coming years. -Ray
  5. Quote: scottfromiowa Well here is how the panel lights came out. Still disappointed about the DG, but I have the bezel. It's wired and capped so install with shorter DG is possible down the road. I like the light provided from these. Installer had to put in a separate dimmer. It is mounted on the lower left of the pilot panel as shown in photo. The ceiling dimmer still works for the overhead spots...
  6. Perhaps you could argue that it is necessary to have your aircraft there to demo your prop pastie. That way it is not just used for transportation, but a necessary part of your sells pitch.
  7. Pay close attention to the last few paragraphs, especially the conclusion. The determining factor is the cost of a first class ticket + cost of lost time due to comercial travel In Kurzet, 222 F3d 830 (10th Cir. 2000), taxpayers claimed the costs of a personally owned Lear jet as ordinary and necessary expenses of a timber farm, a consulting business or a computer and real estate rental business. The potential business use of the jet included flights to a timber farm in Oregon and to condominiums in Park City, UtahPark City is a city located in Summit County, Utah, United States. It is one of two major resort towns in Utah, the other being Moab. It is considered to be part of the Wasatch Back and a part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. ..... Click the link for more information.. The court found that the expenses of purchasing, maintaining and operating a personal Lear jet to make a few trips each year to Oregon and Utah were extraordinary. Further, the court regarded the inconvenience the taxpayers would have experienced flying to their timber farm in Oregon "as minimal, as ordinary and as common, both for individuals and for businessmen," especially because the timber farm was not currently earning income. The travel to Park City on the Lear jet was rejected as either extravagant or personal (relating torelating to relate prep → concernant relating to relate prep → bezüglich +gen, mit Bezug auf +acc ..... The court allowed the otherwise ordinary and necessary travel to the timber farm based on first-class airfare. Click the link for more information. a showing that the expenses attributable to an alternative means of travel by air were reasonable. First, the Tax Court should not have considered the airplane's depreciation when determining whether its expenses were unreasonable. Second, the Tax Court had underestimated the number of trips the taxpayers had taken to Oregon by at least half. Lastly (and most significant to the present case), the Tenth Circuit found that the Tax Court did not give sufficient weight to the time savings associated with use of the Lear jet. The Tenth Circuit took the number of hours saved by flying by personal Lear jet during each year, multiplied mul·ti·ply 1 v. mul·ti·plied, mul·ti·ply·ing, mul·ti·plies v.tr. 1. To increase the amount, number, or degree of. 2. Mathematics To perform multiplication on. it by the value of the taxpayer's time on an hourly basis and added the result to the cost of first-class travel. The Tenth Circuit then compared this sum with the expenses deducted for the Lear jet and found that the actual costs of the Lear jet for the trips to Oregon were reasonable. Thus, the Tenth Circuit retained the reliance on first-class airfare as a standard for reasonableness in determining ordinary and necessary travel expenses. The fair market value of a taxpayer's time, which the Tenth Circuit added to the first-class travel for the purposes of comparison, would not be de-ductible. Conclusion If B's payments to A for X's air travel are found not to be reasonable, the amount of deduction allowable should be limited to the cost of first-class travel (rather than the cost of private charter).
  8. Quote: Urs_Wildermuth Mike, I'd go for the Brittain parts any time but I am concerned that the European authorities are not going to let me connect them to the Aspen. Europe does not reckognize American STC's unless you can prove that someone has done the identical install prior to EASA's taking over the full authority a few years back, or you have to pay the STC out of your pocket. I am still checking back and forth which STC's are grandfathered that way but since the Aspen is relatively new, I don't think anyone installed it and hooked it to the Brittain stuff ever, let alone in Europe.
  9. Quote: Hank My dual Brittains [Accu-Trak and Flite-Trak] work great. One is hooked up to the DG, one is interfaced to the 430W. Keep the red and green tubes in good shape, keep the servos well taped, and they are just fine. Much, much less expensive than Stec-anything, even if you get the altitude upgrade that I don't have. There IS a waiting list at Brittain right now, though. Should be much less paperwork for approval, too, since some of our planes had the Brittain(s) installed at the factory.

  11. Quote: scottfromiowa -UPDATE-Lights still NOT yet installed. My panel does NOT allow for installation of bezel ring on DG...The instrument will "hit" the yoke...Bummer. Installers say "You need a separate rheostat". Apparently ceiling mounted unit won't work (eye roll)...Oh well, this will be a compromise with DG NOT illuminated. Waiting on the rheostat from Spruce. I have overhead cabin lighting too so this will provide some DG illumination. I primarily use 696 to navigate so NOT a huge deal, but am disappointed at the hurdles on this install. What seemed pretty straight forward is taking more time and money...like all things aviation.
  12. Quote: DaV8or I talked to Russell at SWTA just a couple of days ago about my little problem with the brake reservoir. When I mentioned the 201 windshield mod he immediately responded- "We don't do those anymore." The reason being that he uses a cast, rather than extruded plastic for the windshield because it is more optically pure. It is more expensive and much more rare. The manufacturer of the plastic requires him to buy an entire pallet of the stuff or nothing at all. It's about enough to do 90 windshields. In the past he has been able to get other shops to commit to some of the production and so far nobody else will, so being that he is in business to make money, he won't be making anymore. The 201 cowling mod is an FAA problem. He can no longer get the type of resin he used to use to make the cowl and while there are alternative resins available, the FAA requires him to go through the whole STC process again with the new resins. Again, he's in business to make money, so no more cowlings. Sadly, a lot of STCs are going this way. Prices are up, demand is down and the FAA has a burr up it's butt about STCs these days. My advice to people that are shopping for a Mooney now is, If you really want a 201 and are thinking about getting a cheap E or F and modding it up, skip it and get the 201. If you really like the B, C, D or E but would like one with mods for speed, find one with all, or most of the mods on you want above all else, because soon there will likely to be little to no mods available.
  13. Quote: meddesign Thank you, but the aircraft is privately owned, the company is seperate. Sort of like using your private car for business and write off .75/mi. or what ever the allowed rate is. Does that make a difference?
  14. Quote: 1964-M20E Major repair or alteration form 337’s are filed with and kept by the FAA in OK and you can get copies of these. If I understand correctly legally the log books only need to go back 1 year. However, it is in the owner’s best interest to maintain and keep these books to preserve the value of the aircraft.
  15. Does anyone in the Denver/Loveland area have any information on firewall foward? They have had my camshaft for a month now and I having a hard time getting anyone to call me back. They are always going to check on it and call me right back. It was only susposed to take 3 days.

  18. I was told that the oem 201 windscreen would work, but it would require some trimming. They told me they could get them, they just had to order 12 of them at once and did not want to put out that much money and was trying to get another mooney mod center to take half them but had not been able to find one who would. This mod seems to be a good value and it seems that we could get 6 people on here to take them.
  19. Quote: scottfromiowa Thanks Mike. At the time to replace with new vs. overhaul/oversize was about $3 AMU's. I have since thought I was foolish not to pay for new...time will tell. That was a great deal you got there!
  20. Quote: scottfromiowa My engine was overhauled 400+ hours ago. I went with oversizing/Steel. Wondering what others did/have done/are planning to do and how your cylinders are doing post overhaul. I have read that oversizing is NOT the way to go, so wanted others experience/input. So far so good for me...
  21. Quote: jax88 Is there a limit to the number of overhauls you are comfortable with? At some point, do you just replace an engine because of total hours?
  22. I just checked my CAD Drawing. I placed my instruments on 3.425 center to center spacing in the horizontal plane and that gave me .015 inches of clearance between the nulites. I used 3.510 inches center to center spacing vertically to allow for the wiring. If your spacing is less than this you will have to machine the sides of the nulites down a little to get them to fit. If you do have to trim them down be sure to paint the raw edge back back white so it will reflect the light.
  23. Quote: scottfromiowa I purchased Nu-Lite bezel instrument lites for my six pack. Anyone install these yet in their vintage Mooney? I plan on having them connected to the previous post-lite rheostat and wondered if anyone has done this and if it worked fine or there were any issues? Thanks for the feedback. Scott
  24. Quote: crxcte After becoming airborn today I noticed my alternator indicator was slightly negative rather than positive in a 68 20F. About 8 years ago that meant my alternator was not working. I checked the wires connected to the alternator, and reset the breakers (none seemed popped). Can someone recommend a troubleshooting method? Can the alternator be tested without removing?
  25. I would think it would be very difficult due to the compound curve in the window.
