Has anyone thought of using the new Amazon Kindle fire http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0051VVOB2/?tag=mh0b-20&hvadid=871295796&ref=pd_sl_8dnsooeqme_p. ? I was wondering how well it will work for replacment of paper charts and plates. I don't know how well it will work with the flight plan.com Android app? Is the Amazon Android platform different than the Android platform? any thoughts, I am looking for a smaller and cheaper sollution than the Ipad.

I also built my own for <$100. Two bags of ice I get 1 hr use. Mil Jug block ice 1:20 use. Biggest disdvantage is the weight of the cooler.

I meant, it now has the independent mags

I was told that my J had an off airport landing due to failure of single mag. It has the Independent mags

I bought a can of prop paint (epoxy) and tried to touch up the worn edges but that was a mistake. I then had a vibration and had to send it off to a prop shop for a balance and paint job it came back like new and no vibration. That was my experience. Ty

LED Recognition Lights--Are you interested?
tyrefoote replied to Parker_Woodruff's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
They are not absolutly necessary for me to use although they do look good at night, I almost resemble a MD88 airliner !! I fly mostly at night and frequenly fly to KPIM (uncontrolled and unattended) where there is a problem with deer loitering on the runway at night and I will tell you they don't help too much with the forward visibility when the landing light is out. I fixed that problem with the Welen Parmetheus and am so impressed with the LED that I want to do the same for the Recogs. I have read a previous post from Parker that His AP was looking into STC for this issue and that was a couple of years ago and mabee he has some new info by now? -
LED Recognition Lights--Are you interested?
tyrefoote replied to Parker_Woodruff's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I talked with a couple of people at Whelen today and they said they have no plans to come up with a LED replalcment on Mooneys recog lights. They suggested p/n 01-0771125-21 and do a form 337 for field approval. Has anyone gone this route yey or would I be setting the president ? Hank I'm talking about Halogen recognition lights that get Hot they do not flash -
LED Recognition Lights--Are you interested?
tyrefoote replied to Parker_Woodruff's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I havn't found a solution to this problem and I was wondering if anyone has come up with a better alternative yet ? I'm to the point of trying to retrofitting a Cirrus LED recog from Whelen p/n 01-0271325-00 into the wingtip any thoughts on the legalities of that. Thanks T.F. -
Does anyone know of a solution to the recog light problem, heat melting lens. I have called Whelen but have not heard back yet.

Falcon just sent me renewal quotes from Star/MAPA and also Phoenix aviation managers $1502. and $1391. respectively. Does this sound about right? I am with Star now and have 0 deductable. Phoenix quote has a $200. in motion deductable. Quote for one Private pilot w/instrument clean record, 950 total time 120 retract mostly all same make and model Mooney in the last 12 mo. 1988 M20J 120K Hull value, 1mil. combined single limit bod inj , prop dam w/ 100k per passenger limit 5k medical per pass. Would it be possible to get the rate down if I was a CFII / Comm Pilot? Any thoughts appreciated and thanks in advance. T.F.

Can I make a Mooney fit my profile?

Brian I interpret It to mean per rear seat they are both placarded. Ty -
Can I make a Mooney fit my profile?
tyrefoote replied to legallegend's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I would have to decline mission #2 because the rear seats of my '88 J are placarded to a max 170# weight restriction. I have the 2900# gross wt increase and I can tell you that at that wt. and a density altitude of 2500ft the takeoffs are borderline unsafe. The takeoff roll is only slightly longer ,but once airborne the plane will not climb out of ground efect with the gear and flaps down and I was very relucltant to retract being only 10' off. But to answer your question, It will be doable for the other 75% of missions. Although not as spaceously comfortable as the A36 with the big rear door, 6 seat club seating and Oh the $60/hr operating cost difference premium. Hope this helps Ty -
I'm having an issue with my KFC 150 also, In the heading mode it seems to track the far left side of the heading bug. Does anyone know if this is normal or is something else wrong ? It works fine and the self test seems to indicate it's ok.

I don't wash my mooney with a waterhose anymore Because I discovered it took several days to completely dry in a dark hanger and worred about corrosion. I now clean it after every flight with Slick Mist made by Slick and a micro fiber cloth available at auto parts stores and keep it waxed with RejeX. If I happen to taxi on a wet surface I also dry and clean inside the wheel wells. I keep the Belly degreased after all long trips or or about every 10 hours with simple green and then Rejex. You will find that a coat of RejeX makes future cleanup easier. Oh and for the windscreen bugs, I mist water then aircraft plastic cleaner polisher foam and let it sit for a minute, then wipe off with vertical strokes [top to bottom] with microfiber cloth. Good luck with new ownership and enjoy. Ty

As always, thanks so much for the wealth of information, I love this site. The mags were serviced at the last annual 10 months [80 hrs] ago by the A/p shop and not sent off to a mag specialist. I will replace them and harness at annual in 2 months. I think they are Slick 4370- 4372 does that sound right ?

I have experienced minor [one hiccup every couple of minutes] engine skipping at 11000 ft with all mixture settings ? I descended to 9000 and it ran smooth. Engine is IO 360 A3B6 [2 seperate mags] with 1000 hrs since new. on a M20J any thoughts on this ?? thanks always Ty

Midwest overnight trip suggestions
tyrefoote replied to iowaboy's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I absolutly love Nashville, Not only the city touristy sites (Opry, Opryland, Gen Jackson) But, also the Countryside. A short drive south of Franklin on the Natchez Trace Pkwy. (Beautiful drive) there is a great little small town place where quite a few well known artists have homes near Liepers Fork. If your there on Thurs night be sure to check out the open mike night at Puckets Grocery store you will be amazed by the tallent that stops in that little store on Thurs and friday nights. I fly into the Smyrna airport and park at Smyrna Air Center Enterprise will deliver a rental ahead of time. Smyrna Air is great they dont charge to park on their ramp overnight
