  1. I've been using a combination of these approaches- For me, corrosion is the first disqualifier. I do prefer to meet the previous owner. Its fun to learn about their experiences with the airplane, and definitely get a feel for how they have maintained the airplane. At the same time, I completely get that this is a very "sterile" purchase- airframe, engine, propeller, radios, interior all add or subtract value. The reality is that after the purchase, every aspect of care and maintenance will be my responsibility. Rob
  2. For any of you who have gone through this multiple times, I would love to learn from your experience- When doing a first visit to a plane you are considering, (assuming log books are good) Do you have a systematic approach to inspecting the aircraft? Curious if there is a "preflight on steroids" approach that anyone has a checklist they would be willing to share. Thanks, Rob
  3. Thank you- love the list, but it wont sort for me, so I get all the models. Great reference
  4. This is perfect. Thank you!
  5. Where could I find a published list of all the AD's and SB's that apply to an M20 J? I just subscribed to the FAA notifications, (should get notified if anything new comes out- but looking for the complete list. Thanks, Rob
  6. I really appreciate all the advice, and especially Pinecones advice about having a good relationship with the optometrist- The one that is making my current first try at progressives really took time to understand what my sight needs were. I only wish I was aware of the Shamir lenses- those sound perfect. Rob
  7. So, It's come time for me to upgrade my vision- I'm concerned about the difference in bifocals versus progressive lenses. From my limited time trying bifocals, I like the ability to keep my head straight, and still look down to the side and take advantage of the nearsighted correction. I'm told with progressive lenses, you should always point your nose at what you want to see close up. I'm looking for peoples opinion on flying with both. Since lasik is out for now, I'd love to hear from the experienced. Thanks, Rob
  8. Aircraft is located in Oregon, need to bring it to KSDC near Rochester NY. Dream scenario is to fly back , getting instruction along the way. Rob
  9. Looking for references on ferry pilots/ instructors- I found a nice list in the mooney flyer, was hoping people could connect me with people they had personal experience with. Thanks, Rob Turbett 585-750-0079
  10. Thank You - very good perspective and advice, and now I have a new word in my vocabulary! (ameliorate)
  11. I see a number of propeller logs that show 100 hour / annual inspections, are way under on hours to overhaul, but are well beyond the calendar time to tbo- ie- 700 hours, but nine years on a six year calendar TBO. I'm curious about the thought process from owners on the decision to go beyond TBO. Any thoughts or concerns? Thanks Rob
  12. This is great information, and helps with my decision process. Thank you to all Rob
  13. How does TKS really work in flight planning? I see it as a great safety factor. Does it really help you when it comes to flight planning? Its placarded that flying into known icing conditions is prohibited. So if icing is reported, your still grounded, correct? One of the planes I'm looking at has it installed, trying to weigh it in on my decision making process. Thanks, Rob
  14. good to know- a log book I reviewed showed 74's at about 30 hours. I thought that was low for so little time. What is an accepted time frame for rings to seat?
  15. What is a normal expectation for compression results on a freshly overhauled IO-360-A1B6D (under 50 hours) Is there any any kind of scale that compares engine hours and expected reduction in compression over time? Thanks, Rob
  16. Just the cost of admission....
  17. It's getting real- I've got a few candidate planes, and ruled out a few as well... I have used VREF through AOPA for confirming the valuation of the planes. Are there any other tools that you would recommend? Thanks, Rob
  18. Great info- Thank you Rob
  19. I I've seen a few Mooney's advertised with long range tanks. Are these still treated as two tanks- left and right? Any different fuel management concerns? I was taught to leave tanks mostly full when idle to reduce condensation - any different thoughts? Thanks, Rob
  20. I've read a lot about peoples efforts to reseal tanks. I'm curious- does anyone ever just try to patch an area, or is that a losing battle? Thanks, Rob
  21. Thank you- your timing is perfect. I’m in the market for my first Mooney Rob
  22. Great article- thank you for sharing!
  23. Great to know- Thank you! This keeps me from putting a red flag where it is not warranted( without further questions on history) Rob
  24. Is it fair to assume that when you see 100 hour inspections in the logbooks, the plane has been used as a rental? Anything else that may result in 100hr inspections showing up in the logs? Thanks, Rob
  25. Awesome! Thank you. Avemco needs me to spend 15 hours with a CFI with Mooney specific experience. I'm looking forward to it- Rob
