  1. Thank you PeteMc, I will call Jeff. John
  2. Thank you but the plane has a Bruce’s cover. I’d definitely buy it if it didn’t.
  3. Another great bit of advice. Thank you. The Ovation seems to me like a traveling machine more so than going out in the previous 201 and just flying around locally.
  4. Thanks for the T/O flaps technique. I will definitely practice that!
  5. Hello, Looking for recommendations for an instructor somewhat close to Akron, OH for a check out in the Ovation. Over 1,000 hours in M20C and 201 but the 201 was sold back in 2018. The Ovation to me is much heavier and different the the 201. I am current and flying a Falcon 2000LX and Hawker 900XP but I want to be safe in the Ovation. Thank you, John Keck 724-759-9900
  6. eisenhard.net is a link from old MS forum. It is to fold seat forward but not recline back like you were looking for.
  7. Thank you for all of the great responses. Interesting that some 201 airplanes did not have the step installed. I think I will leave the antenna alone, get a folding step, and look/hope for skilled helpful hangar fairies. John
  8. Wow! Thank you for all of the great suggestions. The folding step, voltage advice, Wheln strobe with part number, audio suggestions. The audio panel I think is the original. (King?) The headsets are older generation Bose noise cancelling. Thanks again! John
  9. I have some projects needed for the M20J and any input would be appreciated. First, my airplane has no entry step. Do you think it will be expensive to add? Maybe get a used 201 step from a salvage yard? Would a 1978 need the engine shimmed or mounts and spacers (engine drooping) due to it's age? Is removing the "towel-rack"antenna on the tail a big deal? Both push-to-talk switches on control wheels transmit (I see tx on Garmin 530) but I can't hear anything in my headset. Anyone have that problem? With a new PTT switch on pilot's side it didn't fix the no audio feedback in headset problem. I have a new Plane Power alternator, Zeftronics voltage regulator, and new battery and I still get intermittent red Low Volts light on annunciator. I think I read where it could be bad diodes in annunciator panel. Also on the Maxwell website there is an article about cleaning the master switch posts for electrical fluctuations. Any recommendations for a much smaller LED rotating beacon on the aft underside to replace the huge original unit? I remember some earlier posts about replacements. The black control yokes are mostly good condition but have those chips or chunks out of the nice shiny black finish. I do need a complete Aero Comfort interior ($$$$), but do you have any touch up ideas for yokes? Thank you very much! John Keck 724-759-9900
  10. Hi Tim, Another vote for the 201 from me. I have a 1978 J with 2,800 hours, 1,000 smoh, O&N bladders, NDH, Aspen 1000, G530 (non-waas), Century III auto-pilot, JPI-711 engine monitor, Garmin Aera 810 (for nextrad wx), nice exterior paint and tired original interior. In this crap economy I doubt if I could get high $70's for it. I would try to buy a plane with as many upgrades as possible so you don't pay retail like the other poster said. Check FlightAware N201AJ for how often it flies. It is amazing how far they go on how little fuel. You will see slower speeds as I was experimenting with LOP operations. I seem to always encounter a headwind and my speeds are often 130-140 kts but other times I love seeing 170-185kts with a tailwind. Texas will be an awesome place to enjoy a Mooney with the good weather and no too much icing. It seems like the C and E models have some high asking prices these days compared to the J prices. All American in Texas might know of some off-market Mooneys for you. John
  11. I was having higher oil consumption later into my oil change and did not know about clean oil not using as much. I just had an oil change and filter and a total of 7 quarts (one Camguard). My mechanic looked all over the engine and said it was dry and no obvious leaks were there. My next flight was 3 hours and it didn't really use any oil ( dip stick at 6.5) doesn't some go to the oil filter? I read somewhere that hot days and high rpm will use oil. That was what I was doing. Wide open throttle from take off to cruise and 2500 rpm. Doing that and older oil might have been causing the higher consumption. John N201AJ
  12. Really nice! How far was the flight from Reno? Do you know if they could address my old cracked and yellowed plastic side panels without breaking the bank? Did you drop off the plane or pull the interior out? Thank you, John Keck 724-759-9900
  13. Probably would never happen but maybe new Asian owner could buy the design back from Daher-Socata. I can barely put gas in a 201 partnership airplane so I would not be a 301 prospective owner. How about a Tornado Alley Turbo powered M-22 Mustang without that ugly oversized dorsal fin and aerodynamic cleanup. At least the design probably still belongs to Mooney. John Keck
  14. Thank you! I read your review on Aircraft Spruce. Has anyone been able to get the RPM function to work? What a great price you got. It looks like they are $3029.00 now. John
  15. Hello, My 201 partner and I are considering an engine monitor with fuel flow like an EDM 700 or an Insight monitor. Any ideas on used vs. new or if it is always better to buy new? Maybe you know of the newest coming out at a competitive price. I guess I need to check my Aviation Consumer subscription also. Thanks for all opinions! John N201AJ
  16. Hi, One space in our hexagon hangar is open in Keene, NH. I know that would be a long drive to go flying. I will have to talk to the guys but I think the rent is only about $200.00/ month. John 603-762-3935
  17. Hi Bill, I share a 201 with a buddy and his friend takes his Saratoga to Columbia in KBHB. It is a Mooney Service Center. We are planning to get our next annual there. I would like to talk to John Breda about the Mooney service manager doing the annual in the hangar. Might be tough though...our annual I think is in October. Not sure how many other Mooneys are due then. Also, my partner has heard great things about Tam's Interiors in ME. Tami I think is the owner and you remove the seats and take them to her. Supposed to be very reasonable rates with great results. John. N201AJ
  18. Thanks for the great feedback! N601RX if you could send the install manual, I will give it to the mechanic who is looking at it on Monday. They are a King Air turbine shop but work on everything. Would be really nice to send these replies along to him to save us labor costs and the correct torques. Thanks again everyone! John N201AJ
  19. Hello, Maybe somebody has heard of almost a full right wing tank of fuel during a 1:20 flight. The bladders were installed in 2004. I never had any problems since acquiring the airplane in 2011. I took off with full fuel and climbed to 5000 feet IFR in the clouds. I started to pick up rime ice and requested and descended to 4000'. The temperature was about 38 degrees at 4000'. The ice didn't melt at 4000'. I did smell some avgas but didn't connect the dots. I requested and descended to 3000' and the ice went away. About 20 minutes from landing I noticed that the right wing tank was way down to 1/4 tank left. I looked down at the fuel selector thinking it was selected to the right tank, but it was on the left tank. On approach I maintained a higher approach speed not knowing how the plane would handle with 2/3 in the left and 1/8 in the right tank. After an uneventful landing and taxi in, I checked the right tank and it was about dry. Under the wing about 3-4 feet outside of the landing gear doors, I saw blue fuel stains streaming back to the flaps. Not evidence of fuel stains near the quick drains or inboard of the landing gear. My friend called O&N and said we had the leak and they said it is very rare that the bladder would leak. They suggested that the top wing panels be removed (not the bottom) and look for loose hose line clamps and especially a large plumbing type 2" attachment that might be leaking. I know I will hear how stupid I am for flying in clouds with ice. The temperature on the ground was in the high 40's to the low 50's and I thought I would be OK at a low altitude. Maybe a few fuel tank vents iced up and I lost all of the fuel in the right wing and there is no fuel problem? Thanks in advance of any similar problems or suggestions.
  20. Hi, My friend might be interested in buying the 195 outright. He has a very nice 195 and seems to know of many for sale etc. I left a message so he will probably get back to me soon. Thanks, John Keck 724-759-9900
  21. Ant ideas why so cheap? Some damage but 360 hour engine, G430, spd brakes. Out of KMKC. Pretty sure it sold. The min bid under the current offer disappeared and 31 or so bids. Plane looked nice to me...not a mechanic though. John
  22. I meant to say it needs a second power source alternator. On my second question....I didn't say the Cardinal Cruiser STC from Tornado Alley was a turbo-normalizer. Just wondering how expensive it would be to bring out a 201 TN system. John
  23. Hello, I talked to a real nice guy at the Willoughby, OH facility who said he worked on the Screaming Eagle STC in IN. He said that the 201 would be a challenge because it would need a 70 or so amp alternator with no where to mount on the 4 cyl Lycoming. I think he said it would be very popular on Mooneys that can accommodate a second alternator. Anyone think it would be possible for Tornado Alley to modify STC for Cardinal Cruiser to 201???? John
  24. Hello, great new website. I can't figure out how to view previous posts on specific topics with the drop-down feature that was on the lower right part of the page. Any tips are appreciated. Thanks! John Keck N201AJ
