  1. Thanks Jeff...I'll give the elbow grease/quarter method a try! I have used other metal polish, but just wasn't satisfied with how well they were getting residue from a bird direct hit and bug residue off. A clear coat sealer would be sweet, but I can afford a little sweat in the hanger
  2. Heed Mitch's statement on taxi off of taxi-way hardball to grass. A prop strike happened to a fellow Mooney driver another year (I was attending the MAPA Mooney Maint. class)...The drops can appear slight, but taken with anything but a creep can ruin your day...Be slow and deliberate and have fun...I'd rather get stuck (going slow...lot's of help available) than have a prop strike and related nightmare...Don't forget those grass tie-down's too...note to get mine out as they are needed in Appleton too.
  3. Thanks Hank. I'll check out the link.
  4. Just bought some Flitz Polish to have a go at my spinner. Flitz of course wants you to buy their drill buffer...It's like $30 so I cheaped out and planned to use a different drill buffer unit. What's your experience? How much product do you need to do the job? A dab...a glob a $@%T load? Thanks for your replies.
  5. What would concern me is if this is a new trend...always was centered in middle of green, but now has moved to top of green arc...change in "normal" is my que that something, whether gauge, probe, wires, cowl flaps, oil cooler, oil lines, angle of climb, outside temps is significantly different and maybe NOT functioning properly. I have issues right now with my stock cylinder head temp probe as it is now reading in the 200 range when my GEM is 300-325 for all cylinders... My oil pressure and temps have remained consistent on my gauges (steady in th green) during climb and cruise since I purchased...my mechanic fought high oil temps with another E he works on. His had the oil cooler re-location and a spin on oil filter, but was otherwise stock with baffles in good condition. I can't recall if he had a cowl closure (lower guppy) installed. Anytime you are near peak on a gauge I would attempt to identify what is causing the issue. Please update when you sort it out...Good luck, Scott
  6. Thanks Mitch. I'm good. Mine is right in that "sweet spot" you describe. I will follow up as I was initally reading lower (right after install of EI volt/amp meter) than current level and mechanic said he adjusted the unit...Regardless I have had NO issues in over 18 months since replacement of generator/belt (my generator was OEM and logs showed no previous failure) and EI gauge gives nice piece of mind...Now I just need to get my fuel flow installed. I had some breakers moved and the wire to the panel GPS run, so spot is cleared. Will probably wait until annual.
  7. HMMMmmm, just going by what my A&P said following the installation. If it is a 14 volt system why would you want to charge at a level above 14.0 volts? Curious as I am no expert on the electronics of my '66 E.
  8. Anything in the green is acceptable...
  9. You should NOT have to leave cowl flaps open in cruise below 150. If you do baffles or other issues are likely present.
  10. My E.I after market gauge reads 13.7 to 14.1. Mine also goes to discharge (light comes on) when I reduce power for landing (pull power) in slow 1200 rpm taxi... I replaced my voltage regulator with zeltronics unit and I also replaced my generator and belt (two separate incidents of power loss). I put in an HID landing light and my illumination went from nil taxing at night to WHOA! HID draws a lot less amps... My plane shows little draw with landing light, transponder, two radios, intercom, panel mount gps running. I do NOT plan to replace my generator, but do recommend a new/updated voltage regulator if yours is OEM. They are NOT expensive. After install they do need adjustment so as to be NOT over or undercharging your system.
  11. While it may be jewelry...Rolex watches ARE FINE jewelry...at a price point that I cannot and would not justify...but if I could afford a $200k= aircraft a submariner would be just fine. A fine way to tell time.
  12. Or you go down in "no-where" and want to find "some-where"
  13. Hanhart Flieger Chronograph...
  14. Interesting topic. Will watch to see what techniques with speed brakes are out there. I have never flown with anyone that has them either. I agree that Mooney's are good in the wind (landing config.)
  15. Why would you have them deployed to land? I thought they were used to allow full power descent and avoid shock cooling/major throttle reduction. Once you are down to pattern why wouldn't you retract them...in case you need a go around you want full power and NO additonal drag, right?
  16. Having bought an older '66 my only regret was NOT buying an updated panel. I have made a lot of progress, but avionics are EXPENSIVE and budgeting for a re-do is a big drain and doing it a litlle at a time...is a BIG PAIN. Cowl closure vs. a 201 cowl can be done any time...201 windshield is key. Make sure tanks are WELL SEALED with documentation in an older C/E they will likely leak if they aren't already...if they haven't been sealed ($8500 to do). If you fly out west you will like E (so I have heard)...Wingtips are NICE to look at, but really NOT a must have at purchase. Most older C's and E's do NOT have this mod. I love manual gear and flaps. Make sure that Service Bulletin on cabin tubes has been completed and is documented in logs...For your mission either a C or E will work well...although if I had to do again a mid 80's 201 can be had for high 90's to low 100's with EVERYTHING YOU WANT at a price I could NOT find when I bought my E...Think about the J you won't be disappointed and once you do all you want you will be in J territory anyway...Just my thoughts. Have fun!
  17. Or Kelly...my wife's name...they always put the check/credit card between us...
  18. I thought Victor was Tonto's horse? Sorry obscure Christmas Story reference...
  19. Nice Pics...I too was "taken aback by the awesomeness"...I'm using this phrase by the way, but will give you credit She looks great!
  20. Did you put/did they provide new stainless hardware on cowl/battery access etc?
  21. Your paint looks fantastic. I really like your color and scheme. Beautiful!
  22. Engine Mangement system with fuel flow
  23. Maybe I just need a rabbits foot on my keychain...Naw it would cover up my GEM...
  24. There she is! Last time I saw her she was on the hood of my Trans Am...Moving up, sigh. She's got herself a Camaro and a carport...
