  1. Hello there from a Canadian on the West Coast! Anyone interested in flying to beautiful Qualicum Beach in British Columbia please consider joining us at our fly in on July7th 2012. We will do our best to attend to our American neighbours so feel free to make this a holiday visit. Need more info about Vancouver Island call or email me at 250-468-2771 or drpep@shaw.ca
  2. Given our legacy aircrafts are steadily losing value is there a cross over point where adding non certified avionics at 1/3 or less the cost of certified such as AP or EFIS (Dynon) as back up actually does not depreciate the airplane any more than it is is doing any way? Just a thought to explore DRPEP
  3. Anyone know where I can get the rrquired decals for my Mooney as I just had the airplane painted Thanks Philip
  4. Hi Trey DID YOU MANAGE TO GET A PARTNER OR IS IT FOR SALE AND IF SO WHAT ARE YOU ASKING? Any pics available . drpep@shaw.ca Thanks Philip
  5. Hi Have you sold it yet? Philip
  6. Hello fellow mooniacs1 Its been a number of months since I posted. To make a long storey short In May I had a routine medical check up and complained of mild chest pain. After an internist declared that I had some kind of chest pain but not heart pain I was quite relieved. He did recommend that I do a stress test which I passed to be followed by an angiogram given my age(67). I agreed to do so at the next available booking. I was confident that I was ok based on the classic "ability biases" generally typical of most pilots who think that only bad things happen to the other guy (ie, flying VFR intto IMC would not happen to me). As a forensic specialist my curiosity was peaked. Being a one time competitive marathoner and generally quite fit no harm could be done by further investigation. So, I proceeded to get the angiogram all the while declaring to the cardiologists performing the procedure that I felt bad about wasting their time. Well, the news in short order was that I had no less than six blocked arteries ( 2 at 100%)and immediate surgery was necessary. Before I could really contemplate what was happening I was under the knife or saw and recovered with 4 by passes. My intial recovery was stalled due to infections however I have recovered extremely well allowing me now to do cycle road trips of 40 plus km and some modest hiking. As well I continue to fly as a copilot in my Mooney with two seasoned military pilots for which I am grateful. I wil be applying at the end of October to have my medical reinstated and I am confident that getting it back will happen I had contemplated over the early summer months on selling my Mooney but now retrospectively I am happy that I did not. In summary, the operation not only saved my life it also gave me a renewed sensitivity to do everything I can to remain healthy and not take anything for granted. I am back at work now and I can honestly feel the difference as my energy level is better than it has been for a few years. Thanks for reading my storey. drpep
  7. Hi again This thread has definitely triggered some reflection on my Mooney needs. My E is really close to everything I would want. Engine time 600 hrs 3 blade prop 395 hrs last two annuals under 1500 MU'S . 830 JPI engine monitor, Lasar Electronic ignition, relatively 2 year old exhaust system, Tanis heaters, new 406 ELT, new sun visors, new shoulder seat belts, 201 windshield mod wing root fairing mod, new alternator, new audio panel with built in MPS player Garmin GNC 250 gps.com new Mooney design leather interior. The plane is very solid to fly and I fly it at 9.2 gal perhour and avg 140 kts. More bells and whistles would be nice such as a stec 30 and a Garmin 430 but my dilemma is the expense does not make economic sense. I generally fly most of the time by myself ad only about 30 % of the time with one passenger. But, but but..... as they say a 201 beckons so I am on the hunt for one in Canada which is a challenge as there are not many 201's up here.
  8. Well interesting someone else has had a long wait for Brittain auto pilot components. I ordered the altitude hold for my 67E in June of 2009! I also have called them about every 3 months and have been apolegetically advised that they are working on it and it should be ready soon. I often speculate on the possibility that they do not have the core equipment and they are hoping it will become available but they have no idea when they can fill my order. I am now looking at stec 30 potential as coming up on two years is too long to wait. Philip
  9. Looking for some advice regarding installing a beely panel mod for my 67E. I am currently exploring the purchase of a used single piece panel and would like to know if the panel requires any stiffeners. The holes are already drilled so re-allignment will no doubt require new holes and filling old ones. The seller iis asking $500 for the panel and the cost of packaging and shipping is another $285 not to mention cross border taes and duty. Any comments would be appreciated Kind Regards Philip
  10. I have a 67 E which has been extensively upgraded. I will be selling it shortly as I am looking at a 201. You may want to look at the gallery for my pics on this airplane. Send me an email if you are interested. ddrpep@shaw.ca
  11. I have a three blade hartzell on my 67 E Mooney. I was curious about the clearance as a result of the comments from this thread so I measured it today and got a measurement of 10 1/4 inches. Comparing my experience owning a 2 blade 76 F and then the 67E I would say that the climb performance is better with a 3 blade. I am at sea level and my climb performance single pilot is around 1100ft per minute at 100mph. Philip
  12. Hi I got pedal extensions from Lasar Mooney Service centre in Norther California They come with drawings for 1.5 inches or 3 inch extensions. They work great! Check with Dan at Lazar. drpep
  13. Hello vintage folks and others in the know I am looking once again at upgrading to a 201 ad attempting to get a feel foe the current market values this year compared to the last two years. I have looked on the internet for some blogs on plae values without success. Any comments would be appreciated allowing me to set a realistic price rage for my 67 20E. Thanks Philip
  14. I have subscribed to Mapa off and on for close to 15 years. From time to time it produces very informative articles but for the most part the mag is mostly repeated adds and info on Mapa meetings etc. I have stilled held on to my old mags and from time to time I re read them. One respondent on this thread stated that he found it was a quick read and I would agree. Mooneyspace is far and away more informative and responsive. drpep
  15. Hello George As I share your last name I felt some affinity to fire off an email to you congratulating you on your posting. I am a former Navy seal from Canada and I have enjoyed flying much more than diving. I am now a forensic psychologist digging into the clandestine realm of human misbehavior. Flying my Mooney while it does not happen daily it is a daily preoccupation. Be well, fly well and stay connected. I have benefited from your sharing on Mooneyspace. Philip
  16. Well Brian, for whatever it is worth, I also have a 67E and I temporarily put it on the market last year a 1978 201 got my attention. As it turned out I did not purchase the 201 so I am still in the saddle with my 67E if you go to my photo gallery you will see that my plane is somewhat comparable to yours. I would say yours has better avionics given the G430 and newer paint. I was asking 69K Canadian for mine at the time when our dollar was around 94cents to the us dollar. Now it is close to par. I still struggle with selling my 67E as it flies fast and is low time(455hours). Best of luck with selling your airplane. I would appreciate hearing if you do and I will do the same if my airplane goes back on the market in the new year. Regards Philip
  17. Thanks folks for your feedback on the Duo. I have decided to write a review of the Anywhere Map Duo and send it to Aviation Consumer as they have requested that I do so. Given the lack of response from their CEO on two separate submissions and my continuing difficulties the review will obviously not be favorable Regards drpep
  18. Thanks for the feedback Robert. I will download my info from the JPI and I will check my veratheruem setting and get back to you. Philip
  19. Interesting data you are presenting. I just got off the phone earlier today with a tech from JPI. A few months ago I replaced my JPI 700 WITH THE EDM 830. The display of the 830 is exceptional!. After a number of orientation flights in my 67E I noticed a difference between my factory panel gauge and the JPI. During the hottest period in August the JPI climbed to 218 while the factory instrument read approximately 190. Recently I have been getting readings at 25 square of 215 on the JPI and 185 on the factory. The techy at JPI pointed out what you already know that the placement on the front of the engine of the JPI will read higher. He suggested up to 10 degrees but not as many as 30 degrees as I am experiencing. My mechanic advised me to have the air cooler serviced which I did. It was determined by the manufacturer to be working properly. My mechanic felt my air cooling over the oil cooler and the engine was very good. In summary, I am still uncomfortable with the temperature spread but do not know what else I can do. I asked JPI if the tempt probe could be malfunctioning and he assured me that was extremely unlikely given it was a thermocouple. He did suggest I could try switching one of the identical probes off the cht to the oil temp and see if the readings were the any different. Not sure of this but may try it this weekend.
  20. Thanks for that Walt Like you now have a dash mounted external GPS and it works well. Sun glare remains a serious problem though I will try making up a cover for it like you. My point is though It is really not a built in duo by any stretch. I am now considering purchasing a Garmin 695 and panel mounting it Regards DRPEP
  21. In case anyone is considering getting an Anywhere Map Duo GPS I would like to inform you of my experience so far with this quite troublesome piece of avionics. For those with you unfamiliar with the duo it is advertised as the competition to the Garmin 696. It is a 7 " tablet format with a 32 gb WINDOWS 7 program that included pocket plates, road navigation and US sectionals. It retails for $1800. I purchased one in December 2009 and to date have had nothing but trouble with it. Initially the built in GPS receiver was only workable about 10% of the time and definitely not reliable as a VFR navigator let alone useful for IFR. After repeated discussions with their tech department they suggested I send it back or try their external remote GPS. I opted for purchasing the latter as an add on and as a result was able to finally get reliable reception of satellites. Nonetheless, the duo was now not a duo. Next I had considerable trouble downloading updates from the computer's drop down menu. Eventually I had to download revisons from their website as opposed to getting them as intended through a wifi connection. As I started using this navigator it became difficult to read it as it is definitely not sunlight readable. I contacted anywhere map again and they suggested I get a transparent layover screen designed to reduce glare. I therefore ordered one from them as another expense and when I installed it I discovered that it obscured my screen even more. The problem with the scree is that it is not backlit sufficiently and this is not fixable. As well, the course line when established by programming a direct to course is the same color as the background geography again making it difficult to read. Garmin on the other hand is very readable with a crimson colored course line.. The long and short of it is that my 296 Garmin GPS is way more user friendly than the Anywhere Map Duo! I approached Anywhere Map abut my concerns and discovered they have a response email program with the CEO that offers to respond to any concerns. I decided to send a complaint to the CEO twice and he did not respond either time. In summary this is a sub standard navigator that I would not recommend to anyone. I am even of the view mine is worth next to nothing given my experience of it. I would be very interested if anyone else out there has purchased the Duo and find it acceptable
  22. I also seem to be getting consistent readings on my JPI 830 anywhere from 325 to 345.
  23. When I started flying in 1982 I completed my PPL and joined a group renting a 172. After 26 hours on the Cessna I had enough and I purchased a Mooney 76F with a friend who owned a float plane. Since it was IFR we both did our IFR rating. This was after 68 hours total. Over the years I have flown other planes as well as participated in building a Glasair II. For me I have never been able to get the Mooney fever out of my skin... I am thankful for being able to own such a superb airplane.
  24. Quinn Yes I am inteested Please let me know the background and particulars With Thanks Philip
  25. I am interested in a second hand 496/95. Anyone know one that may be available for sale? Thanks Philip
