  1. I wasn't taught this specifically. We did hood training with unusual attitude recovery, but a 180 to simulate a return to VMC wasn't part of the lesson. I have not gone into actual IMC yet, but I am pretty confident it's a totally different beast than simulated hood/foggle flying. I can imagine that I'd be much more susceptible to disorientation in true IMC and have to focus a lot harder on ignoring my body's sensations and put full trust into the instruments.
  2. Unfortunately nobody took that bet..but you do win the warm fuzzy feeling of saying you told us so!
  3. Following up on this, seems like on a recent maintenance, the wires were re-installed backwards. It's been corrected and properly showing half up half left now. Thanks everyone!
  4. Not closed on my plane yet, but already picked this up and it seems perfect so far! After the sticker shock of a $30k quote for dual GI-275s with engine monitoring, I'm going to stick with the vacuum system first. Thank you for the recommendation @toto
  5. It's not a new installation, but not my plane (yet)...owner says it worked fine before but hasn't used it in a while
  6. What kind of issue would cause the CDI needle to be on the opposite side during self test mode? Picture attached
  7. @OSUAV8TER do you still sell these? I need 2 for the Shaw 431
  8. Wow that sounds pretty crazy to me, being totally new to pricing avionics...how much is the 430 by itself worth?
  9. Thanks, that helps...I obviously haven't done any flying at oxygen recommended altitudes yet, so I'll investigate this more. Planning to do several XC trips that will be 3-4 hours, but they may require bathroom break intermediate stops.
  10. I'm sorry, I totally messed up..I trained in one with the 180hp carbureted O-360
  11. Signed up for that site, scored 34% on that "fun" test lol
  12. Thank you - the thought of running leaner than what gives peak EGT is a scary concept to me, probably because I'm used to the car world where positive boost and running lean is a huge no-no. The ~4 hours of Mooney M20 with O320 training taught me to lean until the single EGT gauge was about 100 degrees richer than a red line marked on the gauge during climbs and I could get close to that red line during cruise (but the engine would run rough before hitting it). In Cessnas, I was taught to lean until the engine RPMs started to decrease, then richen a tiny bit. I understand that with a Rajay turbo on the M20F, it's only supposed to be used to bring the MP back to ~25 inches when I'm at altitude, so theoretically, I could run the same mixture settings if I were at a naturally aspirated 25 inches.
  13. I see the term running LOP (Lean of Peak?) used a lot, but is there a writeup on how to find this mixture setting and fly safely with it applicable to M20F? And how does running LOP work if the plane is also potentially manually wastegated turbo normalized? Is most of the turbo's benefit the ability to fly higher to get stronger tailwinds, or are there other fuel efficiency benefits by flying at higher altitudes? Thanks in advance!
  14. Got it, but even if that part is replaced, wouldn't a waterproof canopy cover be good extra insurance? I've read about the avionics cowling also potentially letting water in.
  15. For those who have to tie down, what kind of covers would be recommended to help with the cockpit water intrusion concerns? A waterproof canopy cover that goes over all the air vents and door/window seals?
  16. Wow, had no idea these existed! Thank you!
  17. I would take the $ savings over having things exactly how I want. I'm too low time to really know much about what I'm missing out on, but I feel like an electronic attitude display is more reliable than the vacuum powered ones, so that would be something I'd change if it weren't already electronic.
  18. Hi Everyone, I'm looking for an M20 as my first plane. Want a WAAS enabled IFR panel, electronic engine monitoring. My dilemma is to look for a cheaper plane without modern avionics and do the upgrading myself, or to go straight into one that has at least a Garmin 430w. Does anyone also have a good sense of the cost for a modern panel WAAS enabled gps and G5 for AI/airspeed/altitude if upgrading from something completely original? Or if there are less expensive or better options than those? Thanks!
  19. Can you give more details on this process? Which specific parts need the lube and how much lube is to be used?
