  1. Ha. I thought it would free up some room. I am trying to read this website for an hour a night. But I can't find anything talking about moving the brake reservoir from behind the firewall to the back of the rear cabin bulkhead such as happens in the J model. Cheers. Denis. Sorry, I must have been tired heading off to bed last night. Edited the above to make sense.
  2. Yikes. That may have to wait until I get some overnights again. Now I'm early days on this, and in learning about the Mooney, so forgive this question. But as it looks like I'll be changing some T/P/M cables out anyway, can I ditch the airline style throttle quadrant and have them mounted on a vertical surface like I see on other models?
  3. Does anyone have a brake down of the Service Bulletins? I've done a spreadsheet of AD's but don't have a spare day to tabulate 250 SB's. Specifically I'm looking for the fuel tank spar corrosion SB.
  4. 65MooneyPilot Yes there was up and down movement. I filmed it, maybe 1/4" but no back and forth nor sideways. Can the up and down be shimmed?
  5. A bit of wear in these rear pivot blocks. Not ridiculous, but noticeable. There are no bushings in this block, so I assume the block gets replaced. Yes I will ring Lasar in the next few days and talk through this. Y
  6. My mate didn't like the gear retraction spring removal tool, and went down the path of inserting penny washers in the spring instead. It worked brilliantly. There really was very little drama in removing the undercarriage.
  7. Well after all that debate on whether to pull down by the tail or lift at the front I did both. And I like to brace for any lateral movement. I'm hoping jacks only for 2/3 months, but there will be a bit of in and out in the cabin. It's sitting pretty solid at the moment.
  8. Where did you guys extract the part numbers for the aileron bearings? I assume by removing the bearing and reading it as the IPC seems not to have them. Ta.
  9. I pulled the left aileron off this afternoon for a re-skin. Looking at the IPC, it just shows the aileron hinge as a unit part and not the bearing part numbers. What's the trick here?
  10. The standby vac has already been ditched. I want the aircraft to head bush for 1/2 hundred hours VFR. If I make it IFR I'll pull the entire dash and redo with a couple of G5's so I don't really need a standby vac. I just thought it was novel as I hadn't seen such a thing and I was told the previous owner over thought things aircraft wise. (Great Doctor)
  11. M20Doc. This is what should be inside your wing. Excellent, thank you. I was going to get in there today but strangely it involves drilling of an inspection panel. Why would Mooney, or anyone else pop rivet an inspection panel?
  12. Thanks guys. Yes I'm in the gathering of information stage before we launch into this in about 8 days. Yes we call them LAME's (pronounced LA - ME) which is a Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. And although I technically am a LAME, in practice my only competency is flying Airliners. So I've a very experienced LAME friend flying down to stay a week and we'll do the pulling things apart phase, to reconvene a few months later for the tedious stage. Putting back together. A64Pilot, thanks for all. So rigging issues, rather than points of failure are the most common cause of gear failure. Good to know. Yes, that's a hefty steel undercarriage and I would be very comfortable powder coating them. I did see the SB re nose wheel. More reading in the next few days. Thanks all. And I'll try to take many pics.
  13. Thanks for the knowledge on the jacking pads. I'll modify mine so as not to be taking weight on the threads. Re powder coating. I'm thinking of stripping, bead blasting and immediately priming with BMS 1011 or equivalent. Then could I give them to the powder coating man? Or am I overthinking this. I see in the notes by the guy who has periodically run the engine and kept the critters out of the airframe that the aircraft has nose wheel shimmy. What are the sources of nose wheel shimmy in a Mooney? I also see in another thread on 'Mooneyspace' gear up landings. Are any of these attributed to gear failure? (I know ABS recommends changing out a rod end on the nose gear actuator due frequent failure)
  14. The tube connect to the intake tube as the VAC source.
  15. Here's an interesting set up. Is this typical Mooney? The STBY VAC pull. It lead to this lever in brass. Which in turn lead to the flex tube running to # 3 intake tube as a source of vacuum. Does this work ok? It's coming out anyway as the aircraft will be VFR and if I take it down the IFR road I'll remove the VAC system altogether.
  16. Thanks Joshua, yes I have the application email here and will sort in the next few days. Look forward to meeting you lot out and about. Cheers, Denis.
  17. I'm sure you all are aware that the original jack points were not threaded. Very interesting. No I was not. But yes there is some insertion rubber yet to go on and yes I'll make sure they're not thread bound. Well now not thread bound and loose on the threads. N201MKTurbo: Great thanks for the advice. Any little tidbits to make this easier are welcome. Yes, I will completely strip it and repaint. Which leads me to another discussion. I've always been hesitant to powder coat things on aircraft, but I read elsewhere on this forum that many do. Any difference in wear rates between powder coating and 2 pack polyurethane ? Also I see earlier 'GeeBee' as a member online. When I pulled the gear out of a Bonanza once he supplied the most beautiful stainless tubes and flex lines. I assume it's the same guy.
  18. Well, I know almost all of you will called it ‘Removing the Landing Gear’. But seriously, what’s involved? I’ve done the first two steps, had some jacking pads turned and par read the service manual. A print out of the physical manual and more thorough read this week prior to tackling the job in a week. Does anyone have notes of when they did the job? Any secrets or traps for young players? I once did the same in a Bonanza and found the ABS gear notes invaluable. Would someone have done the same for the Mooney? All advice by this novice gratefully received. Thanks, Denis.
  19. I've pulled the prop and about to remove the FCU, mags etc. I think I'm almost ready to remove the centre cowl, maybe just the Ram Air cable to go. Any tricks with that. It looked like a two person job. Cheers, Denis.
  20. Hello All, I gave a brief intro of myself in another thread on G5's. But basically I've purchased a '77 M20F that has been out of action and hangared in a desert environment. It's recently arrived at my hangar shown below. My wife likes the rego, as her maiden name was Kathy Whitty. So I've nicknamed it the Kathy Whitty Allstar to keep her interest.
  21. Thanks for the Pirep Bill. The vacuum you used was a normal shop vacuum cleaner or household vacuum? (Any photos) I guess the vacuum is pulling the LEXAN inspection covers in so the blue tape is just a seal. There are a number of old stains, brown in colour on mine. Any idea of the best cleaning product to remove stains? Thanks for the write up.
  22. Ha. Yes they are not young. But then again I realise I'm not either. I'll give them a ring. The M20F has about 4,200 TTAF.
  23. Hello guys. New to Mooney so forgive the questions. (apart from 100 hours 35 years ago) But I'm looking to pull the gear out of a '77 M20F. Third last one off the line before the J. To clarify the above, the LASAR nose gear steering horn is no longer available, but in any case it's been superseded by rebuilding the nose gear truss? Or are they two separate points of wear? Why is the nose gear truss rebuilt? Was it a weak point in the design. If so particular to any models? Any other advise in doing a complete gear overhaul? Cheers, Denis.
  24. George, no sorry ArtVandelay thanks for clarifying the HSI / CDI thing. The flat screen might be a bit much for me, but I'm sure the kids would love it. I do like the compass on the dash. Keith20EH - thanks for the very nice pic. So as I can get some perspective on layout, do you have a daylight one? What would the two annunciator lights be on the right side of the gear lever? Just below the compass correction card. I found some blank instrument panels eBay which was good to get my head around. Not sure why a person would buy one full of holes already. But is there a source for new blanks? I see the main panel has a rolled lip on the bottom, and a funny box thing to the left. I've been tossing up, yes or no on buying this aeroplane, but the F/O I was flying with this morning has a few aircraft online and talked me through a few ideas on structuring the process. Probably what I needed.
  25. Ragsf15e quick question. Are those light rings in the ASI, ALT etc? I'm not sure whether the above would have internally lit instruments. I spent the three hours in the heat pulling seats and looking for corrosion. Apart from getting vertigo looking at the dash, I didn't pay much attention there.
