High Oil Temps - Where to Start
gwav8or replied to gwav8or's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Well crapola as my dad used to say. I sent my oil temp indicator to Rudy Aircraft Instruments and they called me Tuesday to let me know that it is too far gone and can't be overhauled. So, I'm now earnestly searching for a replacement for a Garwin 169C-910-11. I called Mitchell Products and the sales guy that I talked too and gave the above part number too gave me their part number that he said would replace my indicator. Unfortunately, he didn't seem to know what he was talking about. The Garwin gauges are modular and square and the replacement part number he gave me wasn't even close to being a replacement. So if anybody has a Garwin 169C-910-11 laying around, let me know? -

I looked around for replacement units but couldn’t find them. Can you share a source? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
High Oil Temps - Where to Start
gwav8or replied to gwav8or's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Went to the airport today and the oil temp was showing 150 after sitting for over 24 hours. Obviously oil temp wasn't that high in reality. Tapped on the housing of the indicator (not on the glass) and the reading came down to about 80. Ambient temps today are around 60. Should I send it off to have it overhauled or should I fly it and see what happens? If send for overhaul, who should I send it too? Looks like Rudy's also overhauls Oil temp gauges, I'll give them a call but open to other recommendations. Looks to me like the part number is 169C-910-11?? Looks like there is or used to be another digit/character to the left of the C maybe? -
High Oil Temps - Where to Start

Yeah I’m gonna go check the oil temp probe and the connections to the indicator this afternoon. I got a full panel done so I agree and think the most likely scenario would be the connection to the indicator since the whole cluster was removed and reinstalled. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
High Oil Temps - Where to Start
gwav8or replied to gwav8or's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Oil pressure may have been a couple psi lower but still within normal range for what I typically see. Oil pressure was about 74-75 and I typically see just below 80. No winterization. The oil temperature needle was kinda bouncing off redline, from about 230-250 from what I recall. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
High Oil Temps - Where to Start
gwav8or replied to gwav8or's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Oil pressure was top of green arc on takeoff. By the time it got to altitude it had dropped to about 74. Which is about normal. Oil temp was normal at run up, about 120. CHT was normal as was EGT. I only have single probes for CHT/EGT though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Went up today to fly for a bit. On takeoff, I noticed the oil temp was a tad high but it wasn't bad. Around 180 IIRC. Once I got to about 5500, I noticed the temp was at redline. I backed the MP/RPM back to 24/24 and kept it at full rich mixture. Cowl flaps remained open. The oil temp came down to about 240 but wouldn't go below that. Even backing MP down to 20" it stayed close to redline. Normally, I see temp around 160-170, don't remember it ever being over 180, especially in cruise. Where do I start with troubleshooting?

Looks like I'll have about 800ft ceilings up in my area tomorrow. I haven't flown my bird in 3 weeks. This weather stinks! lol

What solvent should be used to remove the glue from the old seal? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

At one time, my '67 F had an inflatable door seal. The door has a tube sticking out of the door panel that appears to have been connected to the door seal and it looks to have had an attachment that would have been used to inflate the door seal. The seal around the door is unusable. It's dry rotted, collapsed and brittle. With winter being here, there is a lot of air that comes through the door where the door seal should be. It's kinda cold! lol I'm considering replacing the door seal with one from Bob Fields but wondering if it's worth it. How difficult is it to remove the old seal? What solvent would I use? How difficult is it to reinstall the inflatable door seal? Link to the door seal I'm considering for reference. https://aerocessories.aero/products/mooney-all-variants?variant=31403794071618

Just a short review of Rudy's Aircraft Instruments in Rudy, Arkansas. After my recent avionics upgrade, the avionics guys said that my airspeed indicator needed to be repaired for leaks. Based on a couple posts from MS, I decided to give Rudy's a look. Their website is pretty basic but their prices are listed clearly on the site. https://rudyaircraftinstruments.com/home-page I called the shop to make sure they were still in business and doing airspeed indicator overhauls. The confirmed and said that it would take 3-4 days on the bench. The said once they were done they'd call to get payment and then ship it back out. I figured for $225 for overhaul it was worth it. I shipped the airspeed indicator last Saturday, 1/13/2024. They received it on either Monday or Tuesday. I got a call on Thursday that the airspeed indicator overhaul had been completed. I gave the payment and they shipped it out same day. I received it via UPS today, Friday, 1/19/2024. Seems to be a pretty straightforward, honest and efficient shop. So far, I'm very happy. Once I get it reinstalled by my avionics shop, I'll update this thread. I have no doubt it will work as expected.

Oh the joys of owing 50+ year old aircraft that we love so much! lol @hammdo Let's look at next weekend. Either Saturday or Sunday. I definitely need a Safety Pilot. Getting used to the G5s is more "fun" than I expected lol

Dang @hammdo sounds like you're having the same kind of luck I would be having. Sorry to hear about the cylinder but glad it was caught on the ground!

A Mooney and an RV??? Nice! Talk about life goals!!! lol -
Finally got my F back from the Avionics shop! Aero Valley in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma did the work. I would definitely recommend these guys. The list of things I had done are: 1. 355 GPS 2. Dual G5 3. USB Clock 4. New Metal Panel 5. New throttle, prop, mixture cables 6. New switches I love the new panel and avionics, but I have a laundry list of things to address now. yay 1. Airspeed indicator needs overlhauled. Sending to Rudy's next week. 2. Brand new clock quit working on the way home, so I will be making another trip to PV. 3. A little smell of exhaust into the cockpit while on the ground and during taxi. 4. Yoke is sticking. Talking to mechanic this morning. Will also check this morning to make sure nothing is binding it behind the panel. 5. TC/PC head displays "Elec Off" flag at all times. It still works though and mechanic checked it and said there's power to the unit. So IDK what do do about that one. May see if Rudy's can work on it too. 6. Case bolt leaking oil. I'll address this one at annual or sooner if the leak gets worse. Really don't want to split the case, so hopefully the mech can follow the Lycoming procedure for fixing it.
