  1. Actually I think I am missing that piece. I have #7 that's the metal piece but I did not see #11.
  2. Wow. They bitch about us modifying our planes and this is what they come up with in the factory? Guess I'll get a little silicone.
  3. Thank you for the replies. There is a little metal piece with a square hole but it definitely doesn't snap in. I'm guessing I'm missing that piece. Any ideas on the part number or where it can be found?
  4. I have a blown recognition light and in the process of taking it out I notice that it was a little "cheesed" when it was installed. It basically was in the little square hole with nothing holding it in other than some adhesive on the back of the reflector cone. How did these things come mounted from the factory? I can't imagine that to replace it needs adhesive to hold it in. There doesn't seem to be a screw or latch, just the black outer cover and a small metal square plate that it goes through. Am I missing a piece?
  5. If I'm reading that chart correctly it looks like you lose rather than gain HP to friction running it up to 3k.
  6. Do you have any links to more information about this?
  7. From what I've been seeing it doesn't seem that there is any benefit to cruising at higher RPM. Maybe I'll try some experimentation on a long flight to see if my TAS changes but if all things are equal 2300 looks like the best choice on paper.
  8. Thank you for the information. Yes, I should have clarified this is an O1 IO550G. It also has a TKS prop if that makes any difference.
  9. I was wondering what people's opinions were on cruise RPM selection. The cruise chart gives power settings for 2300, 2400, and 2500. I've heard some people talk about lower RPM settings being better in the long run for engine life and it by the chart is seems to use slightly less fuel. Is there a reason to set the prop at higher RPMs? Any difference in speed using a different propeller RPM for a given power setting (ie 75% power)?
  10. Sorry to bring this back from the dead. Basically have this problem now. Anyone have any more information about this like part numbers for those fuel sender gaskets. Is this a private pilot job or mechanics only?
  11. Thank you everyone for the welcome and the information. Yes, I don't plan on doing this regularly or at all if I can help it but I would just like to be prepared in the event that I would need to. It seems that the consensus is that I should use a siphon and not drain through the gascolator. And yes, proper care and grounding of course. Culver LFA I checked out that siphon and it looks almost like a magic trick. I have done a lot of automotive work and usually see the ones with the little ball you squeeze.
  12. I am the new proud owner of an M20R Ovation. It is equipped with long range Monroy tanks that hold quite a bit of fuel (and weight). If I was to drain fuel to make room for passengers or cargo could this be done through the gascolator drain or should I be siphoning it out with other methods?
  13. Thank you for the replies. Just out of curiosity since I am still very new to all of this. I have been told that it is better to bet a pre-buy done by a "neutral party" or essentially one that has not been doing the maintenance on the aircraft. Who is the one that flies the plane around to these locations prior to purchase for the inspections? Is it commonplace?
  14. Just want to know if anyone has any experience with getting a pre-purchase inspection in South Carolina
  15. Thank you for all the replies. Looks like I'm going to give Phil a call.
  16. Looking at a Mooney M20J around Orlando FL and wanted to know if anyone knows a shop in the area that is familiar with Mooney and can do a pre-buy inspection. Also has anyone used an appraisal service for a desktop appraisal before?
  17. Anyone thinking of attending the December Breakfast Club meeting at KGGE?
  18. October 20th at KSMS
  19. Thank you for the replies. I'm not flying solo yet but it looks like the breakfast club will be at my FBO in October so hopefully if I'm lucky there might be a Mooney there. And if not when I start making my cross countries I'll see if I can pay 81X and Amelia a visit.
  20. Hello, new to the forum. I'm currently working towards my private pilot license based out of SMS in Sumter, SC. One of my major goals when starting was to be able to fly to family in CT and FL. After lots of searching looking for a plane to fulfill this need most searches ended up with the M20J as the answer. I know some of the complaints about it are that it's cramped on the inside but I'm not large myself being only 5'7" and 150lbs so I think it might not be that much of an issue for me. However, that being said I don't want my first face to face encounter with a Mooney to be when I fly 500 miles to see one for sale. So I figured I check over here to see if there are any Mooney owners near me who might not mind showing off their pride and joy. Don't worry, not asking to fly one, but figure if I can't stand climbing in and out of one I might as well know now. Plus it would be nice to meet some fellow SC aviators.
