Best speed upgrade for 64 M20 E
Pilot boy replied to Pilot boy's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Okay I travel for work (flying x country solo) and carry about 70 lbs of luggage and it worked well this last week to load that into the baggage area and back seat so I'll have to keep experimenting with weights back there. I have the w and b loaded into foreflight so it's easy to calculate and stay within limits. -

Okay sounds good. Yeah I know the purpose of the Chandelles are that....but the ACS doesn't state it has to be at full power anywhere and I've seen other instructors use 25 squared for Mooneys doing them so I was curious. -

Have fuel bladder with 27.4 gallons each side. The long range tanks improve the cruise speed? -

Okay so we pretty much are using 18/2400 for all the maneuvers as an entry starting point for cruise before stalls etc., lazy 8s so that seems about same. The Chandelles you use full power? We were having trouble controlling the plane to get max pitch up and then ending the 180 up near stall speed (70 mph) so we were going only to about 20 inches on that one. What settings are you using for your landings? Short field especially. What stripe are you aiming for? I did my first practit short field landing in the E at 85 mph on final, about 75 over the numbers will full flaps calm wind. That worked well and we landed on 2nd stripe. -

I'll have to try this but I don't think my numbers are quite that good. At that altitude and settings with the power boost on I probably do about 160/165 mph when I'm alone in the plane. -

This is tricky, I'm using it for work for multi state x countries....I'm not sure how much weather etc(winter icing) will allow this as I've just started using it for work. For example this week I'm heading to Tulsa and next week to the far east coast. I'm probably going to airline the far east coast trip (I'm in Nebraska). Good news is wife is happier right now since I got a nice pay raise. ;). Hahaha. I'm getting avionics done in about a month. Scatter shot panel right now with a 430W and STEC 30. Looking at 2 GI 275s or a G3x. -
Hi again all, I’ve had my new to me M20E for about 3 months now and enjoying it much. Great machine, working on my commercial maneuvers now. Side note if anyone has a published guide for commercial maneuvers for a C or E let me know. I’m creating my own with power settings etc for chandelles, 8’s, etc but if there are some others out there please let me know! Okay back on topic.... I want more speed. Tell me how to get it. The E has the 201 windshield, flap gaps seals, lower nose cowling mod. What else is a good speed boost? I am thinking prop? I have a 2 blade Hartzell on it now. I assume a 3 blade is better? How much do those run? I have a powerflo exhaust also. Thanks for the ideas! -Ben

What are you putting in it. My gauge layout is eerily similar on my 64 E. I’m putting some money into it in November to upgrade the panel.

Noticed a small fuel drip from the engine sump after flight the other day 1964 M20E. If I leave the fuel selector off the drip stops but if I select a tank it drips a little. I’ve read on here about an o ring opinion the valve that can get stuck or damaged. I did pull the drain ring in the cockpit up harder and higher than normal a few days ago (I actually remember thinking that was a bit too much force... )so I wonder if I dislodged something. Any thoughts, suggestions? It is leaking I’d say 1/8 gallon over 24 hrs if I leave the fuel on a tank, one drip every 30 sec to one minute.

‘65 M20E fighting High Oil Temps
Pilot boy replied to Jvharps's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I have a 64 E and I’d say it spends most of its time around 215 area right now in summer. Maybe 220 if it’s really hot out. The gauge bounces a bit but it’s always in the green and never in the red, basically same experience as Mike OH. It’s always in the upper green area. Some of the fins on the oil cooler do look damaged from prior owners and I haven’t tried to straighten them or clean them. The CHTs are always cool (375 or less usually seem to be around 325 to 350). -
Density altitude performance with a 1964 M20E

I'm trying to rotate a little sooner now than I did especially when I'm by myself and kight...it depends on the weight I'm at. With me and the guy next to me almost at gross it was really not wanting to lift off before 80, but I'm not using alot of force just letting the plane decide when it wants to lift off. -

i think Google is interpolating between the data points the Sentry provided but Sentry I believe does use WAAS. I have a separate GPS with WAAS but the data is from Foreflight Sentry. It usually has me within 1 meter accuracy. The one thing it seems to lag a little is when accelerating down the runway, the speeds are a bit delayed during the takeoff roll so I don't trust the speed readout on takeoff it's giving me. -

I don’t know that I’ve really taken the M20E off at 60 mph. You are able to lift it off that quickly or are you yanking pretty good to make that happen? Usually I rotate around 75 or 80 if I’m heavy. -

I read this after I found out about the KLM file export by googling on foreflight support - BUT - this did end up working very well. so great suggestion -

Here are some screenshots of the takeoff in Google Earth. Basically the Google earth KLM file showed a ground roll of between 1976 and 2286 ft (worst case - the data is not perfect in that I think it extrapolates between reporting points). Overall it appears that I took off right around 2000 to 2100 ft, achieving about 50 ft AGL over the end of the runway at 91 mph. The remaining runway is indicating about 1000, or 1100 ft. -

Thanks for posting this, I'm going to print this off and use it in the future. I also wanted to update everyone, as I googled last night I found a way to export KLM files from Foreflight into Google Earth. This enabled me to see fairly exact distances, speeds, etc. The ground roll was not as bad as I had thought...I think the end of the runway just looked bigger in the window than I'm used to on the longer ones back in Omaha. I could have probably rotated slighlty sooner to get into ground effect and retract the gear. I did retract fast but I was climbing out by then at Vx. Takeoff weight was 2376 lbs according to my supercomputer in Foreflight where I update meticulously. I probably did the right direction as the slope was at least around 2 percent almost the entire length of the runway, and for some of the runway it shows even greater (-2.5 percent) also the tailwind seemed largely blocked by trees as the windsock was totally flat at takeoff (could have still played a role hard to say). I appreciate the slope and tailwind calculations this poster included in the other post showing the percentages and how they worked against me. -

It was 0F3. That's a zero. Spirit Lake MN. I tried to zoom or use two fingers to measure in the log page but it doesn't allow it like the normal map page. Can you overlay the log into the map page somehow? -

I'm only about 25 hrs into the plane so I will try to refine my short field takeoff methods. I plan to go tomorrow as the weather will be very similar to what it was Sunday with high temps but I'll be solo. I'm glad I didn't use the 2000 ft runway at the nearby airport now. Fortunately it was flat Iowa corn fields ahead of the runway if needed and just a slight rise in terrain. I think I would have cleared trees by the end of the runway. I cleaned up the gear very quickly once I rotated at 80 mph. The Johnson bar makes that process fast once you get it down. -

Yes this is what I was using but the airport is so small it doesn’t overlay a runway in foreflight so I can’t see the distance of the ground roll. Can I change settings or pull the data somehow? -

I did use 2 pumps on the flaps for my takeoff flaps. The slop was slight but almost the entire runway. I think you may be right with the high DA of 4K feet then the tailwind may have played a bigger role than I thought. I witnessed the Cessna using that direction but I probably should have gone the other way looking back. My short field technique needed a lot of work. My cruise numbers don’t seem great to me. I’m doing this off memory but around 25 squared I’m probably seeing about 150 mph with a full load. Probably 160 mph when by myself around 6500 to 7500 msl. Do have the powerful exhaust but a 2 blade prop. -

What model do you have? Full fuel solo or had you burned some off? I’m sure if my 272 lbs buddy hadn’t been with me I’d probably have been off around 1700 ft, maybe less -

I had foreflight sentry, my 430 waas, also on during the takeoff as well as the ads b transponder broadcasting. Anyone know a way to find ground roll distance? Foreflight log of the flight shows a lot but the sirport is so small I couldn’t see the normal overlay of the runway to see when I popped off the ground. The data must be in there I just can’t get the level of detail ... -

Hmm I did wait to rotate until about 80 mph indicated. Still I’m sure it was over half the 3000 ft runway...I would guess looking back on it some more it was maybe 2300 ft or so. Sloped downward w 6 knot tailwind that seemed a non issue but may have cost me some. I read that every 2 knots tailwind can cost 10 percent increase in ground roll though with all tree# nearby I’m not sure how much of an issue that was. It was very very hot (95) and it was very humid (probably 55 percent or so)1450 msl. Still your C sounds like it did better -

yes I have downloaded much data from thrrr it has been helpful. They don’t have much for POH for my E though. I have the manual they have listed. -

I believe my weight and balance is fairly accurate. I weigh 228, friend weighs 272, 240lbs for fuel, we probably had about 70 lbs of baggage and gear I added in. I have it built out in foreflight from my w and balance from the flight manual when the avionics shop added new equipment. It has me around 2379 lbs at takeoff. I’m using exact arms for the seat notch I’m sitting in and I put his seat in an exact notch as well. The only thing I can think of is maybe the flight manual weight and balance is inaccurate or my full rich with extreme humidity cost me some power. It’s very hot the next few days here so I’m going to do some testing.
