M20G Lycoming O-360 Carb Heat on Landing Checklist
JWJR replied to Cruiser73's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Oh yeah one more thing- After purchase in 2013 I researched the FAA documents/history of my plane. I wanted to see where it was based since initial delivery. I found an off airport landing with no damage in the early 80’s Anyway … that incident was contributed to carb ice. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
M20G Lycoming O-360 Carb Heat on Landing Checklist

75C. I follow the pre landing checklist- I pull the carb heat right after putting on the electric FP. Once the field is made (glide) I push it ( carb heat) back in and ensure prop and mixture are set for a potential go-around. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Not sure what you mean by “will that work?” If the plan is a reseal at Willmar give them a call with your questions. Im sure they deal with Mooneys flying there with leaking tanks to various degrees week in week out and will offer advice. Another option as Vance mentioned is to have the leak repaired. ( some refer to as patch) Perhaps call around the shops in your area and see if anyone wants to tackle the job,has some experience and will give you a quote. It’s not a complex job/process. The materials needed are less than a couple hundred and the rest is the labor/time. This may be convenient, considerably less expensive and buy you many years until the full reseal, however no guarantees! Good luck Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Was it just cylinder work or was the engine removed from its mounts and the case split for a IRAN ? Big difference here Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Well those look pretty minor. I recommend you fly or have the plane flown an hour or two and see what those stains look like then. If it looks the same no worries at all imho. Flying will amplify the leak due to the pressure differential. As for timeframe- anybody’s guess really. If you like the plane have the tank inspected for sealant condition- sealant failure usually starts with tiny dirt like debris in the fuel strainer samples. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yeah I think in the last week or so that’s three ditchings in the area. A Mooney, Bonanza and a Cherokee 180 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Aerial images showed a single-engine plane submerged in the bay. The plane involved was a Mooney M20 that had taken off from Gainesville headed to Peter O. Knight, police spokesperson Sandra Bentil said. Engine problems caused the crash, Bentil said. One occupant was rescued by seaplane and the other by Tampa police’s marine unit. I think there was two different ditchings in last few days. A Bonanza near Cedar key and this one in Tampa bay. I could be wrong as I don’t live in the Tampa area. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It’s hard to tell but that looks like a Mooney tailon that plane under water in Tampa Bay today. News says no injuries… Thank God! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

09/30 N5779R Engine Failure at 12,500'
JWJR replied to CoffeeCan's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
Is this the same plane that was overheard vis radio having an engine out emergency in a recent Man and a Mooney YouTube video? The fella that makes the video was flying in Colorado and heard the other Mooney make a distress call. If I recall the plane was in southern Colorado and landed on a dirt road. Can one use the ForeFlight W&B and still be legal? This assuming you enter the info ( fuel , passenger, luggage)for the flight and have the iPhone/iPad with you. I hope so I’ve been doing it for good while. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
In the last 7 years my mechanics have repaired the following leaks on my O-360-A1D. The tach seal leaked the most and was the one that took time to determine/find. Rocker gaskets - replaced the cork Tach cable seal on acc case. Not difficult to replace if you have the proper tool. Push rod tubes O rings - oil runs down between cylinders Oil fill tube gasket - replace the gasket but don’t over tighten Oil return lines Lower case half’s Oil quick drain (slow drip) Crank seal Those are the ones we’ve fixed. There are many other oil leak possibilities such as magnetos and dare I say case cracks to list a few. I have flown with a minor oil leak or two between annuals however I always determined the source as soon as possible after the leak appeared. Best of luck! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

ITT Landing gear actuator overhaul/replacement?
JWJR replied to Nico1's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
There is a guy in Naples that specializes in Comanche gear. I think that’s the name of his website. He rebuilds dukes actuators and has 20:1 gears if you need them assuming you can’t get help from the Mooney sources. He also rebuilds the motors or has a good source that does. A call to him for advice might help. Google Comanche gear. Also Alan Fox has a itt actuator from a 76F one on eBay. I think he’s on Mooney space The add says working when removed. Mine was serviced and all good however I’m considering buying another set of 20:1 gears now just to have on hand as future availability is in serious doubt. -

I have a 75 C. Did you look in original airframe logbook ( first few pages) from 75? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Keep in mind the AVweb article is 2008. I’m sure someone who has had a prop overhaul recently can better ballpark costs. Reseals are chosen by some due to $ considerations. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

You insurance adjuster and mechanic/shop will go over options with you. Keep in mind your magneto or magnetos should be inspected too. Usually step one is remove the prop- step two dial the crank flange. Anyway work the mechanic and insurance rep as one has to sign it off and the other has to write the check. Hopefully you won’t have to deal with betterment disappointment. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yeah I agree that maybe kudos not appropriate for just doing the Right Thing. It reminds me of when I would thank my employees for just showing up on time. [emoji4] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I think a great feature of Mooney Space is to enhance the knowledge of the owner pilot. ( I’m not sure I understand the round the merry- go round statement)Yes read the AD and also read the SB and know the difference as to what work is required and what is done.Ok now you have valuable knowledge if you should have a prop strike or are a potential buyer of a plane that has had one. One thing to mention is although the AD does not require the crank flange to be dialed I’ve never seen a log book entry that complies with the AD without noting the crank runout results.
