I'm almost certain this is the direction I'll go. Luckily, this covered spot is all concrete and pavement, no grass to worry about.

You sound like you're living what I am envisioning! I am heavily leaning in that direction as it makes the most sense at this point (for me).

That definitely makes sense. If I go this route, I'll be getting covers to keep the birds off most of it and just wash the airplane regularly like I already prefer to do. The high hangar cost just doesn't make much sense when there is that much difference.

That's mostly what I'm trying to rationalize at this point. How much worse is a covered spot vs a full hangar? The difference in tie-down vs hangar is obvious to me, but this is a bit different.

I don't disagree with you at all on the benefits of having it in a fully enclosed hangar, but I'm on the verge of selling if I can't make it somewhat more affordable (or find a co-owner). To break my math down a bit more, I have figured up the hourly costs at my average flying per year. If I downgrade to a covered tie-down, the cost difference will make flying 70 hours next year the same cost as flying 40 hours this past year. That's how I've tried to approach ownership costs (flying time). Fun note on keeping it cleaner; Signature somehow constantly blows dust and grit all into the hangars (even when the doors are closed). I walked into the hangar a few weeks ago and my airplane was covered in dirt and grit from them blowing the apron off and into the hangars when they patched the cracks in the pavement.

Thanks! I'm strongly leaning that way as the $400/ month mark is really hard to swallow. It's honestly pushed me to flying less as it's a constant reminder of how expensive it is to keep it in the hangar whenever I visit!

I am working through the throws of solo ownership in my Mooney again and am trying to find ways to make it more affordable (I know that's an oxymoron in aviation). I have found the most controllable cost point in my ownership is that of hangar rent. Currently, my monthly rent is hitting $400 per month for an old worn out T-hangar with manual sliding doors. What I am contemplating is moving my Mooney over to the covered tie-downs that give it good protection from rain and any hail (pretty uncommon here) but will not have a closed door. I am thinking about doing this in conjunction with purchasing a canopy/ cowl cover in addition to horizontal surface covers. This will be a yearly savings of right at $3,000 and would put me in a more comfortable position. I know this is a can of worms I'm throwing on the floor, but I am interested in viewpoints on covered storage ($160/ month) vs full hangar ($400/ month) storage. This is not an open tie-down spot.

I had a guy come look at potentially buying into the co-ownership and I had to talk him through a lot of the false ideas that people have about Mooneys. He ended up not joining. I was thinking it should be worth the high 70's in the current market as I see old panels and rough interiors listed in the high 60's (some aren't selling of course). I could not imagine paying today's prices for a 172 or others, they're good planes for what they do but not worth what the market is pushing in my opinion.

Thank you! I had a feeling it was still going hot but hadn't had my eye on the market recently. I would much rather find a co-owner as I don't necessarily want to sell. But the financials aren't making sense for ownership right now (I'm aware they never actually make sense).

Yeah, it's definitely tough to put an actual value on it. But just looking what's for sale and what people are asking for recent airplanes on the market I've got an idea. When it comes to selling one that's been updated to this extent it's hard to gauge. I'm mostly curious if they're still selling like crazy or if it has slowed any recently.

I’m wondering if anyone has an idea of how the current market is for an M20C? I know in recent months it’s been absolutely crazy and wonder if it’s continuing into this winter the same. I haven’t been able to locate a coowner and am reluctantly mulling over the idea of selling N7816V. I’ll post a couple pictures but it’s been updated really well and has an excellent panel: G530W Aspen PFD S-tec 60-2 a/p Lynx transponder EI tach EI CHT/ EGT Not to mention 201 windshield, leather interior, and lower time smoh Thanks! Hey All, I've decided to start putting out the feelers for a new co-owner for my 1964 M20C. My recent co-owner was great but he had to move away due to work. We set up a great foundation with a written agreement and expensing spreadsheets that kept everything fair and clear. I will plan to build on this with a new co-owner and keep up a similar style of agreement. I'm not looking for opinions on why I should or shouldn't have a co-ownership. A bit about the airplane! As stated above, I have a 1964 Mooney M20C that is well appointed with an updated leather interior, great instrument panel with the following avionics: - Garmin 530W - S-Tec 60-2 autopilot - Aspen 1000 PFD - Lynx L3 Transponder (Ads-b in/out) - Horizon Digital Tach - EI CHT/EGT monitor - EI digital clock - EI outside temp and carb temp digital gauge Airframe mods: - 201 windshield - cowl enclosure - turned brake calipers - tanks resealed 2012 - new gear pucs 2012 - there's more but I can't remember right now The engine was overhauled in 2012 (from memory) and has approximately 800 hours on it. Oil changes occur regularly at 30 hours and anytime the temperature falls near or into the 40's I use the Reiff engine heater. The paint is in good condition with some hail damage from the late 1970's (always hangar kept with me and the previous owner). You'll be hard-pressed to find a nicer C model. I'm taking it in for annual this upcoming week at AGL Aviation in NC (MSC maintained). The aircraft is based at KROA in a T-hangar The potential new co-owner will be vetted of course. Fuel tank quantity 48 or 52?

I know I'm resurrecting a 6 year old post here, but I couldn't help but share an interesting fact. My M20C is the next serial number in line as yours (S/N 2800) and I do have the oil drain with labeled 52 gallons. I was trying to figure out what my actual usable fuel was. That's how this skeleton was pulled from the crypt. -

Yeah, that’s exactly what they’re known for (locally at least). I wish I had seen where you were looking for an MSC before now. The maintenance manager has been quoted saying “If they can afford to own an airplane they can afford the maintenance” as a way to justify finding ways to run up the annual cost. I think if you ended up there and needing maintenance it would be cheaper to disassemble the airplane and truck it somewhere else to be repaired. I’m sorry you’re going through this with them!
