Mine was Monday, After nearly nearly 7 hours in the aircraft that day and dodging thunderstorms all the way into New Mexico I was in the middle of the flair on RW 27 at LAM. There was a slight crosswind that was not difficult at all to set up for, but about 3' off the ground a nice big gust came a long and dropped me to the ground. Got one small bounce out of it. I was a little embarrassed with my dad sitting in the right seat.

Yup, we discovered that on the nearly 5hr long second leg. I also used an E6B app I've got on my phone which is a little easier to put numbers into.

Haha, I need to have someone take a good picture of me and the new bird first! I'll see what I can do in the meantime! Will do! Overall it was pretty uneventful until we got around the New Mexico / Colorado border. Dodged around a few thunderstorms and popped over the mountains at 13,500. I took a bunch of pictures and will have to do a writeup. I know right! I think the one major change I will add is replacing the engine gauges with a JPI 900. That Stec-60 worked like a dream.

Made it back to Los Alamos. Horrible headwinds most of the way back. But ran the numbers and it looks like at 12,500 we were getting about 148knots TAS at 8.5 gph.

I've taken ownership of N1972W as of yesterday. Currently I have her parked at Elliot Aviation at KFCM because that's where the instructor is. I went ahead and made a new thread in the Vintage Mooney forum with pictures. Thanks again for all your help guys!

The deal was finished up last night. N1972W is a 1962 M20C with 5700 tt and 600 SMOH. Yesterday I went up for a flight before closing, everything looked good. I ended up driving my rental car from Willmar MN to Flying Cloud airport where I managed to find an instructor while Tim, the broke flew her to flying cloud. Once there The instructor and I flew Tim back to Willmar and then turned around to head back to FCM. On the way back we had to land at Glencoe and wait out some heavy storms over Minneapolis. I did my first night landing and first bit of night cross country time! My dad, a Delta pilot, is flying out tomorrow afternoon to fly her back with me on Monday. He's flying a redeye from LAX to JFK the night before and then I'm going to make him deadhead to MSP and spend 5 hours with an instructor in N1972W. Her final home will be KLAM in New Mexico.

Nope, it's gone now. Eric and Paul are now the main shop and working on taking over the FBO. I just bought Brian's M20C.

Went for a spin in N1972W this morning. Wow it's nice to have some speed. Had the STEC 60 fly cardinal directions at 4,500' and we averaged out about 145knots. Looks like everything is in place and as soon as the bank deposits the funds I'll be all set. Pics to come

Yeah, I've talked with him and Eric Rudningen, both of them are overworked at the moment.

Headed out to Willmar tomorrow. Prebuy went well. Only items of note were a hole in the muffler where the exhaust pipe exits and a worn down tire. Both of those items are being taken care of today / tomorrow. Other items included a loose rudder hinge, some slightly worn connector ends on the control pushrods and slight wear on a couple of other normal wear items. There were two very old items on the title but we managed to get those cleared up. Anyone know of a CFI with at least 600TT, 100 Retract time, and 25hrs M20 time in the Willmar or MSP area with availability this weekend? Most important day is Sunday I need to get 5 hours of dual for my dad so that we can fly the plane back to NM together.
-
Yeah I found the one for the 65C. It had a supplement section for the earlier models.

So looks like I am probably headed out to Willmar, MN on Thursday. I'll close Friday morning and do transition training all day Friday and Saturday. My dad is going to fly in commercially into MSP Sunday morning. Me being the terrible son that I am, will make him do 5 hours of dual time in the M20C after being up all night flying the red-eye from LAX to JFK. Monday morning he'll do 5 hours of solo and then we'll take off for New Mexico Monday afternoon.

M20C High Altitude Takeoffs
klystron replied to captainglen's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I'll be able to answer about the M20C in a couple of weeks. I have landed both a Remos-GX and a Tecnam Sierra, both powered by a normally aspirated Rotax 912ULS up to 9,000' DA (7,200' MSL) at KLAM. I made a spreadsheet to do quadratic regression on the take off data in the 1965 M20C POH: Ignore the graph for the most part. The important thing is the equation to the side. -
I had a passenger set mine on the dash of the airplane while we were stopped for fuel on a cross country. The thing instantly overheated and we had to go in the FBO and wait for it to cool down.

Also, if anyone has an electronic copy of the early M20C owner's manual and could email me I would love to start looking that over.

Update: So I signed the purchase agreement for N1972W, the 1962 M20C. Working on getting the escrow account set up for the deposit. I spoke with Eric at Weep No More about getting a pre-buy inspection done. They told me they can get it done sometime early next week! So depending on when my instructor has free time, I could be closing as early as next weekend!
-
No not yet. Sit in one, yes, fly, no. I think I'm going to make a move on the 1962 M20C. I spoke to the broker on the phone today and will hopefully have scans of the logbooks in hand by the end of the day. I have an insurance quote from AOPA in hand (for a decent bit less than I was expecting), I have loan pre-approval in hand. Once I have looked over the logs I'll arrange a pre-buy, and maybe a fresh annual? It still has almost 6 months on the annual inspection, but I'm thinking I'd like to do a combined pre-buy and annual. Once that is all done I guess I'll fly out there with an instructor from here in Los Alamos and then fly it back! Sadly I'll have to leave this beautiful bird tied down, but I think I'll order some nice covers from Bruce's Custom Covers. I might end up selling a 50% share to a friend of mine and if that goes through and they ever get around to building new hangars up here then I'll try to get it into a hangar here in town.

Went flying with a friend / coworker of mine down to Double Eagle in his RV-7. Had a good time. He was thinking about getting into a M20K 252 but with one of my main goals being time building we decided that probably isn't my best option. Over late lunch I showed him an M20C and M20F I was looking at and he was intrigued by the fact that he might be able to do a partnership on one of those and still keep his RV! I've sent him a couple of listings that I've been eyeing and we might be taking a trip out to AZ to look N7027V in his RV. Might be looking at a few others as well.

Although I just found a really sweet C on controller: http://www.controller.com/listings/aircraft/for-sale/1439237/1962-mooney-m20c 600smoh, 995lbs useful load, 3-blade prop, 430W, Garmin SL30, Garmin 340 audio, Garmin GTX-327, Garmin 496 yoke mounted, speed mods. Paint in 2011, tanks sealed 2011. Seems like a well maintained, quick C.

Oh man, I occasionally take people flying in a Remos-GX. I normally get the airplane from Santa Fe and pick people up in Los Alamos. They step out of the terminal building and are like "we're going flying in that!". On the big cross country I did from KSAF to KHYI and back with a friend of mine everyone on the ramp who saw the airplane was like "holy crap that ting is small". Although, I do think that the cabin width on the Remos is larger than the mooney. It's actually fairly comfortable to ride in.
-
Cool, yeah I'll keep an eye out for one. If I had known 100% that I would have my medical I totally would have bought your C. Right now I'm looking mostly at an M20E that Alan Fox is selling in NJ and another M20E (rayjay turbo and speedbrakes!) that a guy is selling in Ca. I'm also going to meet with a coworker today who currently has an experimental but wants to get into a certified aircraft and a fast one. He is looking at M20Ks and would be interested in a partnership.

Klystron's are fine, as Jerry said they are just really big RF amplifiers. I don't know about what thingwing was talking about (which is not a klystron).

I try to stay away from that topic because... reasons... Klystron: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klystron

Isn't the unit that was STC'd just an attitude indicator? No ASI, VSI or HDG?
