Depending on how much your hull value is and amount of damage, it is likely it is total. You're probably looking at around 40k to fix. Some insurance companies, like USAIG, would pay up to the insured value to fix the aircraft. Not sure if they still do. Most take the quote verses what they think they can get out of the salvage and figure what's best for them. Lazy adjustors will just total it and be done with it. You may also be able to cash it out and keep the plane, but it probably won't be enough to fix it. That is unless you compramise on some things, like a used prop or don't do the teardown inspection.

I would guess if you already have the 201 spinner bulkhead mounted, then you could get away without removing it.

Obviously my numbers are higher than what it would cost the factory, but my point is i don't think they could refurb a J model and sell it for 200k and make money. Based on all the refurb prices i've seen out there, it looks like most of them are pricing around 50% of new. That would put a refurbed J at around 300K. So it would be competing with a used Ovation at the same price or a new Cirrus SR20 at 500K.
-
Not sure you could do it for that. That is the price for that remained 172 that was just announced. Lets do some wild guesses at the cost to IRAN and Jazz up a J 1) Runout J Model 60K 2) New Strip and paint 20K 3) New Leather Interior 20K 4) Lowpesti Cowl 20K 5) new Glass cockpit 50K 6) IRAN airframe and gear system 15K 7) New IO-390 40K 8) Powerflow 5K 9) O&N bladders 10K ---------------------------------------------------------- Total Cost 240K Add in an over 20% mark up and they would have to sell it for around 300K to make the business case. Would someone pay that for a refurbished J model?
-
Sounds to me we should pitch the idea of a composite J model to these guys. http://www.saravin.com/Specifications.html

A good successer would be a stretched M10 with 4 seats and a low compression IO-390 that could run unleaded. They could call it an M15 and do like the M10. Have a fixed gear competitor to the 172 and a retract to compete with the SR20.

KSN-770 Can King make a comeback?
flyntgr1 replied to pinerunner's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
At some point i'm going to have to add ADS-B. I don't have a WAAS source at the moment as i have a KLN-90B and narco nav/com hooked to a KCS-55 HSI. If King made an all in one unit with an integrated ADS-B transponder, i could replace the 90B, the narco, and the KT76. It would fit very nicely in that spot in the panel. -

If BK really wants to sell these, they are going to have to sell it at a price point you can't refuse. Like less than a used garmin 530W. Or they need to add functionality that no one else has. Like say intigrating an ADS-B transponder, audio panel, storm scope, and/or radar without any external boxes. -
What was the stupidest reason you were grounded
flyntgr1 replied to Houman's topic in General Mooney Talk
My worst was baseing my aircraft 9.5 miles from a nuclear plant during 9/11. There was a 10 mile halo of no flights for several months. I couldn't even take off and quickly get out to move to another airport in the area. -
So if we already have an open baffle system on an E, will it need your new baffles with your Mod?

Failed Eddy Current Inspection
flyntgr1 replied to lamont337's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
If you want a B hub, there is prop with one for sale up on Barnstormers for under 3k. It has 72" blades, so won't work for us. But you can always get your prop shop to swap tour blades into it. -

Yeah, I turned off the IPhone auto correct after that post. I meant to say Potential . -

My guess is they are talking about filling the hub with red dyed oil. This way if a crack forms, you will know right away. It eliminates the eddy current requirements, but doesn't eliminate the pontifical for a crack to form. -
In years past, good sheet metal shops could take their ferry prop and a ferry permit, put some speed tape on it, and move it to their shop. However, depending on the age and condition, most gear ups these days are totaled by the insurance company. Now they pay retrieval companies to disassemble them and move it.

Need to sell my 1962 M20C with spar corrosion

If he's willing to do this, I would suggest setting up one of those Go Fund It accounts that are all the rage right now. -

Winchester, TN Mooney Accident, 18 April
flyntgr1 replied to wiguy's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Boy this thread has taken a turn for the worst. Lots of personal attacks against fellow pilots. n253km attacked me by saying that I was mad that I didn't steal the plane and called it junk. Far from that is the truth. I looked back in my phone pictures and found out I looked at this airplane in Sept 2014. (I'll post from my phone the pics I had) At the time I was needing a prop and an alerion for my 66 M20E project and really was just intrested in the parts. The owner told me that it hadn't flown for over 10 years and that he hadn't run the engine in 4. He said that he started to get an annual on it back then, but didn't want to spend the money to fix some squaks that were identified. When I looked at it I realized that it had way to much potintial with the right person to be parted out. It had no hail damage. It was dirty from sitting, but looked like the original paint would clean up well. The interior was old, but in good shape. Right before it sat so many years, it had a gear up landing and was repaired but not painted. The repairs looked good from the outside. I didn't see any seaps from the tanks, but I didn't open the caps to see if any fuel was in it. The engine had been torn down due to the prop strike with many things changed. It was so much work I questioned why he didn't spend a little more and get a full overhaul. The prop was brand new and showed very little wear. He didn't advertise the price and he wouldn't give me one when I asked at first. He keep wanting me to give an offer. He seemed like such a nice guy I didn't want to insult him. He finally thru out the 20k number and I didn't counter as I wasn't prepared to take the risk. And we all know there are risks involved with aircraft that sit. I wished him well and it looks like he got an offer he liked. Now on to the crash. If there was a problem with the engine from sitting, you wouldn't know it with out a full tairdown. We don't know if that was done or not prior to the crash. We also don't know anything about what was found and repaired during the annual. I only bring this up becuase the report on the news said that the pilot reported loss of power on takeoff. I see this as another example of why a good pre-buy is important. Had I bought this aircraft, I would have done the exact same as what I think the Pressley's probably did. I would have done a good annual, painted the unpainted parts, gave it a good cleaning, and flown it a bunch of hours locally to test the engine. -

I know everyone is concerned with the 5 people part of this, but I think this is another example of reasons to get a good prepurchase on an aircraft. I would be willing to bet that the aircraft had little done to it other than a quick annual, some paint, and a good buff after it say for that long. -

I doubt he was onboard. I'm pretty sure he was the one that bought it from the guy in Decatur that I talked to. I noticed that the listings for it by him had been removed recently (barnstormer and eBay). I bet he sold it to an unsuspecting buyer and the registration hadn't caught up. Like I said, this aircraft sat in a community hanger for many years up until a few months ago. The engine had been torn down after a gear up and a new prop put on, but the owner never flew it. It had dry rotted vacuum lines and what else wrong with it. -

That aircraft sat for over 10 years in Decatur AL up until a few months ago. I looked at buying it, but the guy wanted to much (20k) for a Mooney that had potential for major issues. Someone in Winchester TN bought it and slapped an annual on it and has had it listed for about 30K up until recently. -

Keep in mind that if you go carbon, you will probably need carbon molds as well.
