I had the following items removed from my J model Mooney last year as part of an avionics upgrade. They were all in good working order. I've let these sit a while and if they can find a good home to a fellow Mooney owner, I'd take any reasonable offer for one or all of them. Honestly, time is not something I have a lot of, and rather than research exactly what these are going for, thought I'd toss it out to this group first. Thanks! Jason

I had this cluster gauge removed when i upgraded to my EI primary instruments. Unfortunately, the oil pressure does not work properly (it is intermittent), and I had it diagnosed as the amplifier that was used in this model mooney. I was planning an upgrade, so never did the repair. All other gauges are working, however. I have no idea what, if any value this may have to anyone, but thought this would be the best place to try. I'll entertain all offers. I also removed many other items which I'll be listing elsewhere, but message me if you're interested. They include a UBG-16 (4 cylinder), KLN-90B GPS, KT 76A transponder, and KMA24 audio panel. Jason

I have a J model and can say I experience the exact same behavior. In my transition training and the proficiency programs I have attended, I heard it was very common. Now, its muscle memory. If it ever stopped doing that I'd lose a couple hundred feet. Take care! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

We come up from TKI, about 5 hours ourselves. We overnight in Madison to see my family and to be fresh for the VFR arrival. See you there! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

My friends and I will be flying in on Saturday. This puts us usually nearby the large showers in the North Forty. Two Mooneys, mine is N1137Z. Look for the Wisconsin Badgers EZ-up tent. I'm not the most outgoing guy, but I find that if a shared love for our Mooneys isn't enough to break the ice, a cold beer is. Haha. Hope to see you there. Safe flying. Good stuff. Thanks. I'll go the VFR route, which should save me enough time to get stuck a few more minutes in Houston traffic.

I should know this, but... I've flown several times into KHOU recently, but always on an IFR flight plan which, with north winds result in a very round about way of getting there. Coming from Dallas, it seems like I could cut the trip time by going VFR, below the MEAs, with vectors only necessary for spacing and also bypassing the arrival procedure. What I am not recalling is if I need to have an IFR clearance to a class B airport or not. Also, if not, do I risk not getting cleared into the Bravo under VFR. Worst case, I'll just file. But thought I'd ask here.

Thanks, Raptor. We're heading back tomorrow and your home base looks like a great spot for a fuel stop. Y'all got a good spot for a quick lunch by chance?

https://vimeo.com/136886929 Thanks for all the great advice. My wife may not agree, but for me, what could be more beautiful than left traffic into KEYW!

The replies to my question are awesome! Thank you all. I love too how the first posts were very much safety and routing centric, and once the crowd figured, "OK, now that he's safe, let's make sure he has fun!" The good news is that my wife and I will be joining my best bud for his 50th birthday, and not having fun this one around isn't an option. The better news is that I'll be back for sure many times, and will eventually knock out all these great spots along the way! Thanks again, y'all!!

Great suggestions. I really appreciate it. I think up and down the chain will be best mix of safety and sightseeing. Good tip about stuffing the handheld in a ziploc. Looking forward to the trip.

Later this month will be my first flight to Key West. I've searched and found tons of places to visit while there, but coming in from Dallas in our J-model, I'm hoping to get some advice on routing from some experienced flyers. With so few airports, and lots of swamp and water, what would be your suggested route(s)? It's more about safety than speed, and some awesome sights and experiences would be a welcome treat. I am instrument rated, for what it's worth. I will be getting life jackets for my wife and me. By the way, any suggestions for life jackets? Won't have tons of need for them back in Dallas so not sure if renting would be best. Thanks for your suggestions! Jason

Carusoam Good suggestions. Thank you. My searching hadn't turned up much so I'll try multiple words. I'm not certain the tach I have. Only guessing, but it seems like it was the original shipped with my mooney in 1987. It's in the ballpark of TTAF when I bought it a year ago. I've also not tried the smartphone apps. I'm curious though, if I find it's way off, what then? Overhaul the tach, replace it, and what about aircraft logs? Seems that since it's running fast then all maintenance would have been done early (rather than late) but any other concerns I should deal with?

Just back from Oshkosh and what a great time! During the trip, I realized the tach time was reading very fast. I did a few tests. At 2.500 RPM (and around 20"), 0.1 on the tach time was anywhere from 5min 5sec to 5min 13sec. At 2,300 RPM, 0.1 tach time was between 5min46sec to 6min. I'm ignorant on this as it relates to the Mooney M20J, but I guess I was surprised. I would have thought 1:1 tach/hobbs would be closer to 2,600, but then again I'm not sure how MP and RPM factor in. Would anyone have any insight, links to information, or suggestions for me? Among others, my concern is that I'm spending extra money doing scheduled maintenance too soon based on this. Thanks! Can we start talking about Oshkosh yet?

I'll be there in N1137Z. Not quite ready to caravan but I will overnight in Madison on Friday (my hometown) and fly in Saturday. Hoping that will put us in a prime spot on the north 40. Can't wait to see all the mooneys fly in! Can non-caravanners score a BBQ ticket or are they only available in 3-ship formations? :-) -
Hello. Shot in the dark, but is there anyone based at Mckinney, TX ( TKI) that has a stratus they would consider loaning or renting over this weekend? Planning a trip back home (MSN) and my flying buddy has our stratus. My J has a strike finder, which is great, but I'd love to add the extra data the stratus provides considering the scattered storms in the forecast. I actually tried to buy a stratus 2 from appareo, but unfortunately they're not allowed to send them by overnight delivery. I realize what an odd request it is, and no hard feelings for those thinking what a nutball request this is. Happy to leave you with a full deposit. Anyways, in either event, thanks for all this forum does to help us mooney drivers. Jason N1137Z

Couldn't agree more about the value of the training. Just as helpful were the stories, advice and experiences from the other attendees. I'm definitely doing it again. And again. Also, the materials and connections you leave with will keep on delivering added training. It's by no means ONLY two days of Mooney training. Hope to see you at one real soon.

+1 for Jerry Johnson. He took me under his wing helping me get to a MAPA class in Branson while I was still an IFR student. Oh, yeah, if you haven't yet, register for the Fort Worth class in October, I think. Also, I fly out of TKI and there are two great Mooney guys instructing there that helped me with my J model. Happy to get you their info if you need.

Ipad mounting requirements and the FAA???
jastu23 replied to dcrogers11's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I took my Instrument check ride 4/11/15 in Mckinney, TX. I have the iPad mini ram mounted to my yoke. Works great there by the way. My examiner, who was wonderful, was perfectly fine with this. Although, had I not brought paper backup charts, I got the strong feeling he would not have allowed the ride. Passed too! Jason N1137Z -
Suggestions for an Orlando Airport?
jastu23 replied to jastu23's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Wow, great advice! I guess there's always a chance for a bad experience or two in any busy area, and despite one over-the-air lecture from Ft. Worth Center, I've become spoiled by the wonderful folks at Dallas Regional Approach and McKinney Tower. I guess I'd be leaning towards KORL, and, for what it's worth, I should have mentioned I'll be flying in VFR. I'm still a few hours away from my IFR ride. Luckily, I'm in no particular hurry though. As far as a fuel stop, I may have business in Pensacola, in which case I'd look nearby there, otherwise, Quincy, FL, near Tallahassee looks like an economical choice. I'm open to any ideas though! Thanks, y'all! -
Hello, I'm taking my first trip to the Orlando area in my new "J" and am torn between Orlando Executive and Kissimmee. I'll be there about a week, and staying (working, actually) near the convention center (Disney area). Both seem to be about the same drive away, but having never flow there on my own, was wondering if there was any local or experienced suggestions that would lead me towards the best balance of low ramp fees, service, and convenience. Thanks for the help on this and especially throughout the rest of the forum. Being a new Mooney driver has been made even better thanks to all of you.
