  1. I have an annual coming up next month on my 96 M20J. This service bulletin has not been performed according to my records. My ailerons are not binding now. Is it worth the cost to perform this work during the annual? Surely someone has some experience with this bulletin.

  3. Same exact problem on my 1996 M20J. The stall vane decided to fail and sound continously after three hours of straight and level flight while over the mountains an hour and a half out of Salt Lake. I love my Mooney but a horn that loud you can not silence by pulling it's beaker is an incredibly stupid design.
  4. The gages are sold. Yes they are lost during a bladder installation as there is no penetration in the bladder below the mounting location to accommodate them. Various approaches have been taken to deal with the gages including removing the mechanism and placarding the now inoperative gage. I chose to remove the gage completely, flush patch the hole in the wing, and repaint to match.

  9. I managed to break the RH stock visor in my '96 J in half today. (Caught it on the shoulder armor of my motorcycle coat ...) I do not want to start another argument about the merits of various visors but would very much like to find a stock replacement part. I believe the Mooney part number is 1500083-13. Perhaps someone has a source or, better yet, a pair left over from a replacement project. Thanks for the the help.
  10. I have just completed installation of a Tanis preheat system. The power connection Tanis supplies is a large female three conductor connector exactly as used for a heavy duty power extension cord. There are clamps supplied to attach this to the oil fill tube. I did not care for this method of termination for several reasons. The oil filler is a long plastic tube and it did not seem advisable to attach a plug to it that might have significant forces applied as the power cable was mated and disconnected. The connector was also much larger than the power conducted required. Mounted in the suggested location it would partially block access to the right hand magneto. Attached are pictures of what was fabricated as a termination. The local avionics shop provided a four connector screw type panel mount connector and jack rated for the power drawn by the Tanis system. The panel mount connector was attached to a sheet metal bracket clamped to the upper engine mount tube. It is easily accessible from the oil fill door and requires virtually no force to mate and disconnect. I considered attaching the male plug to the end of a standard extension cord to be left in my hanger. The problem with that is I could not then use the system on trips as there would not be a mating connector available at other locations. My solution was to mount the male connector on the end of a ten foot orange outdoor 16/3 extension cord. This is light and compact as well as brightly colored to serve as a reminder to remove before flight. The female connector under the cowl is protected by a plain red plastic cap when the system is disconnected. You can see it on top of the cowl in the picture. None of this is rocket science but I thought others might be interested in considering alternatives to the clunky Tanis termination.
  11. It is unseasonably cold here in the Pacific Northwest. Overnight temperatures have been in the low teens and it has been only in the low 30's during the day. I parked my J on the ramp at Hood River today after topping the tanks. I visited the museum (they have an amazing Boeing Model 40) for a couple of hours prior to departure. On initial climbout I experienced a stream of fuel vapor exiting the left tank cap, not good. After a quick return I discovered I could rotate the fuel caps easily with them locked in place. I borrowed some tools and tightened the springs substantially on each. That solved the problem. I had carefully adjusted the caps at annual two months ago so they were easy to lock. Both have all new o rings which are still in good condition. I can only assume that the cold temperatures reduced the spring tension sealing the caps as I have not had this problem before today. I am curious as to wheter others have experienced the sealing of their caps changing as a result of temperature excursions. Both caps had the cotter pins in place so movement of the adjusting nut could not have been the problem.
  12. I had my J done at Lasar in October. The base price was 30 hours and $3100 before squawks. They were very thorough and I was completely satisfied.
