Lionudakis Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 Anyone been involved in checking balance of flight controls after paint or repairs, mainly elevator and rudder?
MooneyMitch Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 Yes, with my expereince recently, those items should be checked and adjusted as necessary after painting. The parameters can be found in your specific Mooney service manual.
Lionudakis Posted January 28, 2012 Author Report Posted January 28, 2012 That's my hang up. I checked our beautifully painted controls, and both elevators and the rudder were over, I removed more paint than I put on! Checking the balance per the book, they are over the max by several ounces, I stripped the bottom of the elevator carefully with the intent of repainting very lightly, but even with bottom stripped they are over, same for the rudder. There isn't that much paint on them. The book doesn't specify to weigh with or without the control linkage bracket bolted on the control surface. The previous owner said without, but it seems the manual should specify if that was so. They appear to be 100% factory. Hopefully I'm missing something, but I've done this several times on all kinds of aircraft and never dealt with one you can't add weight to, and is so close on the max limits to begin with.
