Hi guys,

im just wondering what the demand for parts is. I found an older Mooney for sale that’s complete, but hasn’t been flown in about 20 or more years. It’s well out of my budget to get flying again but is complete. I may buy it to part out but I have no idea what the demand for parts and pieces is. I’d appreciate any input.

thanks

There is a market for many parts to keep the fleet going, a lot depends on the model.

We have a few parts sellers around here daily…

Having one airplane to part out…. Is less cool as the good parts sell off…

You might get stuck with half a plane…

People won’t know to go to you for parts…

When people ask you about the fit and finish… your experience will make a huge difference….

Imagine having to answer the same questions over and over again….  Do you have part X or Y, what part number is it? Will this fit MY Mooney?

You quickly come to the realization that there is tremendous risk… financial…

There is tremendous competition…. Around here, and the commercial big chop shops…

For an example of one guy selling an Ovation one part at a time…. There is one here.

If you can’t find him… you will know what this is like….

If you are a mechanic, working at an airport, with a place to keep it… you have a chance…

Think through this deeply…. It won’t work out by accident….

Remember… nobody is  going to like somebody that cuts up Mooney planes instead of revitalizing them….  One guy got renamed… the reaper…

PP thoughts only, I have purchased parts from a few of the people mentioned around here…

Best regards,
