Allie Mooney Posted August 6, 2018 Report Posted August 6, 2018 I have issues with my compass. It gyrates quite a bit. It’s the original. I want to replace it with a new one but want to mount it someplace other than the windscreen bar. Any ideas? I’m concerned with interference. Quote
chrixxer Posted August 6, 2018 Report Posted August 6, 2018 I mean, if you have a spot for it, you can always go with a panel-mount SIRS: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/sirs_compass.php?recfer=3762 I'm thinking about that as a solution, though I'm not 100% sold on giving up a panel hole. I have the VCC (PAI-700) and even with the "balls" it's totally inaccurate on many headings (30°+ off). Quote
MBDiagMan Posted August 6, 2018 Report Posted August 6, 2018 I couldn’t wait to change out my compass for a card compass, but was perfectly good with mounting it in the original location. In the course of doing that I read that some folks had trouble getting it to work well with the magnetic effects of the steel passenger compartment cage and the panel. I managed to swing mine properly in the original location without the balls, but I read that putting it in the panel sometimes creates challenges. My $0.02, Quote
Allie Mooney Posted August 6, 2018 Author Report Posted August 6, 2018 Thanks. I planned on putting on the windshield bar, where my current one is, and it seems you can with the bracket available. Some have said that the bar also provides interference, since it's metallic. Quote
Guest tommy123 Posted August 7, 2018 Report Posted August 7, 2018 Lots of things behind the panel to interfere with a compass, including tubular structure. Stock location probably the best place for it. Quote
MBDiagMan Posted August 7, 2018 Report Posted August 7, 2018 Yes, I used the optional Mount specifically for the Mooney and am very happy with it. In fact I moved it from my C to the F I am buying. I also have a card compass in my Cessna 140. They are wonderful. Quote
