I've got a small oil leak at the top of my prop governor ('78 J - IO360-A3B6D). It's coming from what I believe to be a pressure-relief adjustment screw/bolt. The prop/governor are functioning perfectly normal with no issues; the minor leak was discovered through routine inspection during an oil change. I found reference to a McCauley "service letter" (1998-22A 12/10/1998 LEAKING OF GOVERNORS FROM PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE ALL GOVERNOR MODELS) but can't find any more information about this in a short time of searching online. Does anyone have any more info about this they could share, or have a suggestion where I might read a bit more about it? Though I don't believe this to be a safety of flight issue I do intend to resolve the issue in the near term. The governor has less than 400 hours since overhaul by Tiffin Aire but I'm hoping this can be resolved without having to remove and return it. Any ideas about this or the service letter? Cnoe

My Rocket lost 4 quarts of oil during a 3 hour flight. I found out when it took 4 quarts to get it back to 8. Until then I was using about 1 quart every 4 hours and I didn't think much of it. During the flight manifold pressure starting to fluctuate about 4 inches, with oil pressure close to yellow range. I since figured out the MP fluctuation was due to insufficient oil pressure actuating the turbo waste gate. Landed at nearest field and local maintenance facility did leak down, one of the cylinders was around 40 lbs. No oil in exhaust or any other visible leak but lots of oil under belly. The oil was coming out of the crankcase breather tube due to blow by. They pulled the cylinder and put in new ring set and that fixed it. I also noticed the oil was still clear after a 4 hour return flight. So if you're losing an excessive amount of oil this could be due to blow by like it was for me.

We did the first oil change on 1ZX last week. This was the first time since buying that we had both the top and bottom cowlings off of the plane. There seems to be a small oil leak on the back of the engine. I attached a picture of where the leak seems to be coming from. Hopefully, there's enough of a picture to be helpful. I've got two questions: What is this thing? My best guess is a tach sending unit, but i expected there to be a cable for the tach instead of electric. How is this fitting attached to the engine? The whole sending unit moves up and down a little. Seems to only move in one axis. The oil change went great otherwise. Nothing "extra" in the oil filter. A quick drain was already installed, and works like it should. I've got some ideas for making less of a mess with the oil filter next time. The oil leak must not be too bad. No puddles under the plane, and we've only put in about 1 quart every 7 or 8 tach hours.

My 68C has developed an oil leak since the last MX worked on the engine. I had him look at it and he tightened a few bolts on the oil pan and called it good. Next morning, the oil continues to seep over night and I cannot find where it is coming from because it looks wet everywhere (mostly from the back side); however, the oil seems to be seeping from a point higher than the oil pan in the back side. Has anyone experienced this before?

So, I mentioned briefly in another post that my vacation flight to St. Simons Island became a vacation drive when the electrical system went south (without me!). The symptom was that I was showing now alternator output and the Low Voltage annunciator light and JPI voltage alarm were flashing, and no amount of resetting circuit breakers was helping. My A/P finally diagnosed that the alternator just wasn't generating the correct output, so we sent it back to PlanePower because it should have just still been covered by the 2-year warranty. They came back and said the cause was "oil contamination" and that it wasn't covered under warranty. Has anyone else ever experienced this? My engine has a few very minor slow oil seeps in a couple of places, but "it's no gusher" as my A/P says and in fact never shows any oil on the belly or anywhere else. I'm trying to think what could even be leaking near the alternator to cause this. Anyway, there wasn't much I could argue since they have the unit, and I can't prove or disprove their theory. They gave me a cutrate deal on a new one which will come with a new warranty (unless of course it gets oiled up again!) so I'll be back in the air this weekend. But dang...that was a new one for both me and my A/P.
