Several weeks ago, on a 30min Encore flight, My #6 CHT went to over 600° as recorded by my JPI 711. Unfortunately, this went unnoticed in flight until engine roughness was detected on the next takeoff which was aborted. On inspection, all cylinders had compression in the 70s except #6 which was 15. Borescope inspection showed piston damage. The cylinder and piston were returned to the engine overhaul since the engine had only 200hrs since overhaul. The #6 spark plugs all had broken center electrode insulators. The overhaul shop is contributing toward the new cylinder and piston and says the classic detonation damage is caused by pre-ignition from “cross fire”, either inside the magneto or in the spark plug wire bundles. They recommend not tie-wrapping spark plug wires together. 1. Has anyone heard of this? 2. If the magneto only fires every 120°. then the only possible pre-ignition crossfire would be 120° BTDC, which if it occurred during the initial compression stroke would do it? 3. Firing order is 1-6-3-2-5-4 so the crossfire pre-ignition would have to come from #1, during #6 compression stroke. Right? thanks for any comments. Dave Ketcham, Mooney 252/Encore

Hello everyone. I am thinking of trying the electric magneto arena. I keep reading of fuel savings in the area of 1 gph and a fairly decent performance increase. Has anyone switched to electric mags or give any advice on this? I fly a J model, 201.

So I have a ‘86 252 that has had more than its fair share of magneto issues, the latest being a failure of a 40-hr (Slick......) mag. The AMT asked if I’d thought about having a vent tube put in to keep the mag temps down. He said the failure mode (secondary coil) suggested damage from chronically high temps. I’ve never noted anyone disussing this issue on any model Mooney. Have I just been living in a bubble? Has anyone else had a chronic mag problem?

Flew our m20k 252 up to rogers ark and found the engine was running a little rough on the descent. After landing tested the mags and sure enough it would barely run on the left mag.Had a local mechanic pull the mags and drove over to quality aircraft accessories in Tulsa and the left mag tested bad. They could not rebuild that mag and I ended up purchasing a new slick mag (part number 6324). Now is where it gets weird. installed the new mag yesterday and it would barely run on the new mag. Mechanic checked timing several times and the plugs and leads and his best guess is a bad new mag. Of course we couldnt get a another mag until monday so I got the pleasure of driving back to Texas 7 hours instead of 1.5 hour flight. The local mechanic seemed like a knowledgeable guy but is there anything special about replacing a pressure mag on the 252 that he could have overlooked?

I had Weber Aircraft install these new at 1790.1 AF hours. At 1816.7 hours we decided to do a complete engine overhaul and the build shop insisted on brand new mags. These mags have 26.6 hours on them - they didn't even get to their first timing check. $900 each. If you need a mag, and can find a better deal, you should take it. Can send pictures, but they look like brand new mags packaged in brand new Champion boxes. Nice, but not very interesting imo. So I finished installation of all my interior panels after a long remodeling process and now my avionics master switch will not power my avionics. The only thing I can think that would have anything to do with it is when I disconnected the speaker and lighting wires on the overhead panel. I have always had an additional switch in the circuit breaker panel that also powers my avionics as an alternate source but now it is the only way I can get power to the avionics. I also noticed that when I cranked the aircraft to run it up, the aircraft wants to shut down if I select the right magneto. When I select the left magneto I don't even get a drop on RPM. Does anyone have an idea as to what might be causing these issues?
