  1. Been tolerating this for too long without asking about it. After fully closing cowl flaps during cruise flight, the cowl flaps slowly move to about one fourth of the way open. How normal is this? I return the switch to the off position after closing. I don’t leave the switch in the close position hoping to avoid overworking or burning out the electric motor. Cowl flaps are working normal on the ground, and they stay closed with moderate manual tugging on the cowl flaps. I looked at all the linkage mechanisms under the cowling, and apparently the design does not use an over-center technique or any other technique to lock the cowl flaps fully closed. Maybe the air pressure pushing on the cowl flaps is causes the gearing and electric motor to rotate until that force is balanced by the resistance of the mechanical linkage. Clarification would be appreciated. Thanks.
  2. The left cowl flap on my 77 J broke. The bracket that attaches to the cowling is held on by what looks like three rivets. They have pulled through the cowling. What is the best way to repair this. I don't have any rivets with heads near that size. It looks like an aluminum double on each side of the hinge would hold it but the holes are large enough it would slide around. Anyone know how this should be repair, short of buying a new cowl?
  3. Hello All - Quick question --> My 1967 M20F will only provide cabin heat when the cowl flap is closed. Problem is that on cold days (and nights) I still need to leave the cowl flap open (or at least trailing) to keep the the CHTs below 400 degs. I find myself switching between cowl flap closed so I can get some heat in the cabin to defrost the passengers or half-open to get the CHTs cooled off with the air vent closed to prevent the cold air from rushing in. I checked the SCAT tubes and don’t see any holes/ripes and I checked the movement of the lever in the heater box and it seems okay. With the cowl flap closed it cranks out the cabin heat just fine. Maybe that is just the way these old Mooney's are but it seems like a crazy design...I do have the 201 cowling mod installed on N811SS and there have been all manner of mods/changes done to this machine over the years. Does anyone else have the same issue?
  4. Is any one familiar with the Service Instruction for the 231 K model cowl flap modification ? It's SI M20-68B...
