  1. I was expecting it to work as you described after the overhaul, but it doesn't. I can't say there's anything wrong with it, but it is a head scratcher??? Yes, it sure is nice how easily it starts now!
  2. Airplane is running again! I had a hell of a time getting my carb overhauled; I ordered an overhaul/exchange from Spruce(Marvel Schebler) and they kept moving the date back. After a few weeks, I called and was told it'd be here soon and it didn't show, I called and said unless you can guarantee the date I need to find another option, the lady at Spruce told me she'd call MS and call me right back, never got a call back, but when I went online to my Spruce account I found they moved my back order date again for the fourth time, I'm very disappointed with Spruce for acting so cowardly. So I canceled my order, looked in trade-a-plane and found Aircraft Carburetor and Injection service of Texas, they took care of it right away between Christmas and New Years! I put put it on this week along with some new Amsafe retractor seat belts, and fixed a bunch of other minor issues I found along the way, and I'm happy to report that It started in about one blade on the test run today! Ran smooth, no adjustment needed other then half a turn to idle speed screw! Interesting observation related to my original post; now when I turn the boost pump on before starting, the pressure comes up to six PSI then drops right back back down when I turn off the pump, before it hung and slowly bled off. And the throttle is much smoother, what happened is that the throttle/accelerator pump linkage was worn out inside the carb and was contacting the inside of the carb body preventing the accelerator pump from actuating. Surprising how well it ran with that problem! I highly recommend Aircraft Carburetor and Injection service of Texas!
  3. Are all the EDM 700s capable of fuel flow? It's listed as an option when you buy one, but does it require more then just the sensor, is there a difference in the unit itself?
  4. I ordered a overhauled carb from Spruce on 11/22, with a backorder expected date of 11/30, then it changed to 12/7, today the expected date simply said "call" so I did, and they say Marvel is saying at least another week; It seems Spruce and/or Marvel Schebler just makes up dates when things are back ordered, I called Qaa to and they're back ordered as well. Does anyone know someplace ells to get a Overhauled Carb?
  5. I once wanted to try my hand at a replacement bimini top for my boat, so I went on eBay and found someone who sells allot of older (more heavy duty) non-commercial sewing machines; I asked her about one particular machine she had for sale where she had posted a video of the machine sewing through 8 layers or more of blue jean material and leather; I asked her if it would do well sewing through several layers of marine canvas; she steered me to another machine she had for sale; I got it for like 130 bucks; an old sears belt drive model. It does very well through very thick material, but I think the issue with many of the non-commercial machines is the capacity of the bobbin translates to only about 8 linear feet of sewing; and the walking foot has trouble when you have big heavy pieces for it to move; but both minor issues that could be worked around. So if you have an interest, go on Ebay and get an older unit on good advice from someone who knows; they will do leather. By the way my top turned out OK, if I ever had the interest to make another I think it'd turn out nearly acceptable, but what I really learned is that I'd rather do other things then sew.
  6. I was wondering about that too, but I didn't notice anything last time I flew, it ran great, just wouldn't start the next time out. But I never move the throttle very fast so I'm not sure I'd notice anything anyways. When I started it this morning, I only let it run for about 30 seconds; just long enough to know it was running on it's own fuel, and ignition system is functional.
  7. I had a little time this morning so I sprayed a little fuel up the airbox; it started right up, and ran perfect. After shut down, I verified again no amount of pumping could cause any fuel drips from the airbox, so carbs being repaired. Thanks again for all the help, and the unrelated yet interesting information!
  8. Thank you to everyone for the responses; I'm going to check the ignition system as well but it sure seems I have a fuel problem. It sure is frustrating working on other people's airplanes when yours has a problem and you don't have time to deal with it! Does anyone know where the fuel pressure sensor is located, is it possible to read fuel pressure without fuel reaching the carb? I have the maintenance manual but I've been having a hard time getting a parts manual from the two MSCs I've asked.
  9. My airplane wont start, I'm not extremely familiar with "what's normal" because I just bought this airplane, on my third flight with my instructor it wouldn't start. Before this, it's started normally and ran well. I read some old posts where people have described that during their starting procedure they turn on the boost pump, build pressure, turn off the boost pump and then pump the throttle while watching the pressure gauge go down with each pump. My airplane does not do that, pressure builds on the gauge with the boost pump, I turn it off, the gauge stays at 6psi, I pump the throttle, the pressure does not reduce any faster then if I weren't pumping at all- it goes down very slowly. With this in mind, I started to suspect the accelerator pump might not be working, so I intentionally tried to flood it; I pumped many, many times, with pressure on the gauge, I've not got a drip of fuel out of the air box drain. I also pumped the throttle arm directly on the carb just to be sure, still no drips out of the air box drain. No smell of fuel, fuel selector is not off. Am I missing anything? Thank you!
  10. Thanks guys! I'm finding it's not so easy to get a local Mooney CFI. I can't believe I've owned an airplane for a week and haven't flown it yet!
  11. Thanks to the guys here who have been helping me out behind the scenes! I've been back and forth about what model to get, but a real good deal on a C model popped up locally so I bought it (after a thorough pre-buy), Now I need 5 hours dual and a complex endorsement for the insurance company (and as much as I need to feel comfortable). Can anyone recommend a CFI near Greensboro NC? I've looked on all the "Mooney CFI lists" I can find, doesn't seem to be one listed too close. Thanks everyone!
  12. Looks good! What year was the engine installed? Anything ever been done to the fuel tanks?
  13. If you have a good instructor you've already learned more then the DE will ask for. Be confident, don't BS an answer, and if it's a yes or no question, answer with yes or no; DONT TALK MORE THEN YOU NEED TO!
  14. I asked the seller if the GB was a typo because I thought everyone converted them at overhaul but he confirmed it wasn't a typo. Kind of made me wonder why; also plenty of upgraded LBs or "262s" around, so...
  15. Wow, that's nice! The interior looks great, did they refurbish the plastic too?
  16. I got to fly with Hernan today in his F, great airplane, and Hernan's a really nice guy! Compared to the 172 I normally fly, the Mooney felt much more stable, like it just wanted to go where it was pointed without any fuss. Also, I was perfectly comfortable, we weren't rubbing shoulders like I did with my CFI in the 172; I knew I'd like it, but I REALLY liked it!
  17. I'm new in town and my hotel is not too far from Southeast airport, I'll be in touch with you guys; thank you!
  18. I'm a new pilot and would really like to get a closer look at a Mooney, If there's anyone nearby who might like to show me their airplane I would certainly appreciate it very much! Of course I would pay "my share" of fuel if a ride was offered, and maybe lunch? I'd like to purchase an airplane in the next few months, and I'm trying to determine if I can/should go with a Mooney. Thank you!
  19. Cirrus's are made of almost all glass, not carbon (and they are heavily bonded with adhesives); the spar is carbon. Carbon airplanes usually have outer layers of glass and extra layers around fittings to insulate from galvanic effects; how well they do with that...time will tell. With that said, I would bet a dollar that if we identified 100 serviceable 1986 252s or Js, and similarly identified 100 2014 SR22s, 25 years from now we will have more of the 1986 Mooneys still flying than the 2014 Cirrus's.
  20. I guess I came across sort of bragging judging by the responses I got, I never asked for anything other than advice. I figured that many of you would have been in similar situations at some point so it would be OK, but I guess not. So since some of you are so sure I'm out for your credit card number why don't you just go ahead and prove yourselves right and PM it to me?
  21. You're right, I don't want to rush, it would take all the fun out of it.
  22. Have you guys really had trolls with posts like mine? I'm a real person and I hope to meet some of you one day, probably at EAA since I (normally) live about two hours away from Oshkosh; I normally go. I went looking for the Mooney area last year but It was the second Saturday and it seemed everyone had already left; too bad, if I would have gone the first Saturday maybe some of you could have verified my non-Nigerian ethnicity.
  23. Thank you to all those that seriously responded, some good info! I agree that with an agent I could be involved at least through e-mail and phone, and there's no reason why I couldn't make a quick trip to finalize the purchase in person; I sure would want to do the inspection along with whoever does the pre-buy or at least do my own look over when it's opened up. Also, I don't live out of the country, I'll be back. If the plane has to sit it wont be for long. Although my situation may not be ideal, I've been wanting my own airplane forever, and particularly a Mooney since the first time I saw one.
  24. Seriously, if you see a problem, tell me, I can take it.
  25. I'll only have two weeks at the end of the year, including Christmas to make it happen, if I wait, 1/3 of the aircraft purchase price will be given to the gov in taxes and will be gone forever. I know I'm not the only one on this board with a tax bill, but they'll be getting plenty out of me, anything I can do that can align my business interests, and my own interests, while paying less taxes is something I think I should pursue. So the rush is, I can buy a 70-80k airplane for 49-56k, if I do it this year! Next year I'll worry about next year.
