False. Avidyne, as usual, has a ridiculous policy that they will not support "accidented" aircraft avionics which is just plain silly. I know 1st hand. Had the conversation with a support rep. and in the end he was not able to differentiate just what constitutes an "accidented" aircraft. In that particular case, the Avidyne avionics came out of a Piper Mirage that went off the runway. Ripped the gear off, the insurance company "wrote-it off" (another somewhat nebulous term) , no injuries , cabin and the rest of the plane didn't have a scratch. The dual IFD440 were installed in other aircraft, no problemo, but the DFC90 AP head was STC'd to the airframe, so they denied. Garmin has NEVER posed a problem with this.

I prefer to use "uneconomically repairable" which is exactly the situation of the donor Cirrus. Engine failure, CAPS pull, broke wing on touchdown. New wing is over $250K if Cirrus is willing to sell one. Everything in the cabin is in perfect working order.

Eagle to Screaming Eagle STC - Increased fuel capacity ?
N177MC replied to N177MC's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Thanks guys ! ps: This Eagle is FAA registered and I'm an FAA cert'd A&P/IA, so no EASA regs to get in the way. -
I have a client with an Eagle that has the Screaming Eagle STC conversion. The Eagle left the factory with "collars" in the fuel cap covers to limit fueling to 75 gallons. He believes that normally the STC allows the removal of the collars thus enabling fueling to 89 gal , useable. I can't find the full STC installation document and the AML says nothing about fuel. What gives ? Thanks !

FU : Indeed, problem fixed and plane is flying again. In the end, there were two points of failure : - The actuator motor was grounding internally, repaired by competent electrical motor specialist, $200; - One of the two actuator reversing solenoid relays was TU, replaced both relays, $500 .
-
I AM an A&P/IA and I have zero problem using OEM parts. But let's look at this from a slightly (barely) different angle: The "Mooney" part is un-obtainable, and/or Mooney is now out of business and there are NO Mooney replacement relays to be found. Now what ? Game over, your '83 J is now worthless ? How is this situation any different from the "by the book" perspective ? Get my point ?
-
That assumption is false. Replacing both relays with EXACTLY the same part from exactly the same manufacturer require only the ability to read a PN and manufacturer's name on the component. NOT rocket science. BTW: These relays are from a German manufacturer, not chinese , but quite frankly, that's a moot point because that's what MOONEY chose.
-
Those two solenoid relays are Kissling / KTE Connectivity PN: 26.72.03 and can be bought for $250, each. No need for Mooney or Dealer for this. BTW: Installation, strictly speaking ( ie. sans all the troubleshooting) is about a 4 hour job, including jacking the plane and running gear tests before returning to service. $1400, that's just $350/h ...
-
Not fixed yet ... : So, re-installed the motor, but breaker still breaking ... Turns out one of the actuator relays is bad. The current reversal is controlled by a pair of heavy relays in series. One is obviously stuck. Me thinks this may have been collateral damage from the motor shorting to ground, or not. Stay tuned !
-
Update: Pulled the motor out of the actuator and brought it to a DC motor specialist. He quickly confirmed that a winding was shorting on the armature. Said he can replace winding in 24H, cost $200 .
-
It appears to be shorting internally .

Okay, I spent 3 hours troubleshooting this and I found the smoking gun : The actuator motor is shorted internally . Checked the actuator by disconnecting the motor lead wire then connecting to an external 24V battery - motor runs fine both directions with minimal amps pulled. Checked the motor lead wires and found both shorted to aircraft ground, hence breaker pops as soon as current is applied . So where can I find a new actuator motor ? This is a Eagle M20S, Eaton actuator. Thanks !
-
The gear actuator breaker's popping when selecting both gear up and down. I disconnected the actuator motor wires and ran them straight to a 24V battery - actuator runs fine both up & down. I suppose that the motor is getting long in the tooth and just drawing too many Amps? Also curious that t he actuator is rated 13/23 Amps whilst the circuit breaker is 7-1/2 Amps. Any ideas before dropping $10K for an overhauled actuator ?

Since when ? I have plenty of WTB posts on different platforms and this is the 1st time I've had a scammer contact. Ay any rate, very easy to rat these rats out ...
-
Rodd is the pseudo of the scammer
-
Not with TKS and a 3 blade prop. A clean & light Eagle will do that on 12 gph.
-
IMHO, if you "invest" your money in anything that you have no vested interest and just "grin & bear it", the pro's in that market are going to eat you for lunch ... What can you do about it : Invest in things you understand and better yet, have some control over .
-
I posted a WTB request for a prop. I got a PM from someone that joined just before sending me the PM. The scammer said he knew someone that has a prop for sale and gave me a bogus name & email. I contacted the "seller" and he offered to sell me a NEW prop for $450 ! What A Deal !!!! After a couple of email exchanges it became clear the scammer had no fr'gn idea what he was trying to sell ... I have never seen this particular scam and if it was well executed could easily dupe a member out of $$$ ! THE KEY HERE IS : KNOW YOUR SELLER !
