Thanks everybody I really appreciate it! It's hard getting used to those CFI initials behind the name. Almost like it's not really true. Today I've giving a mock PPL checkride. In a..........................Cessna 182 Oh well I'm getting paid for adding more hours to my logbook. How bad could that be!

Hey All, I posted this on another forum but I thought my Mooney brethren might like to know how it all went down. I used my mooney, a m20C model for the checkride. I have been practicing with friends (pilots) in the left seat and I have been teaching manuevers and landings in the right seat for about two months. Here's how the ride went: I was tested over Human Behavior and the Principles of Learning/Levels/Maslows Hierarchy of Needs. Those are very easy for me because my current job is essentially all of that stuff put together. I'm a professor at a university. Next up was Flight Instructor responsiblities. Chatted a bit about how I'm not supposed to be the sheriff or narc of the airport, but to keep an eye out and make sure nobody dies. He began to ask me about endorsements but as soon as I brought out the 61-65E we went to the next subject. He did make sure to mention that if the endorsement document has been revised up to letter 'E', that I better make sure I'm endorsing what I think I am by referencing the proper reg, 61.87 etc. I then taught Runway Incursion and a proper Weight and Balance. W&B was easy since I teach them as two separate subjects and combine them afterwards. Taught Steep Turns - Ended up drawing vertical and horizontal components of lift and talked a lot about load factor and all that jazz. Flying Portion - I used my M20C that I have 300 hours in now. That made it really easy. I had also been sitting right seat in my and another friends Mooney for the last 3 months so I was quite comfortable doing the right seat flying. Just....no brakes Real easy, he said he was a private pilot here to do a complex checkout. Okay no problem that's easy. Talked about how the Mooney is the only airplane with a proper tail.... (he is a helo guy so he chuckled) Did Steep Turns, Climbs, Power off Stalls, Lazy Eights, S-Turns across a road. Soft field and short field landings and takeoffs. My soft field landing was probably the best one I had ever done, and we ended on that. I'll extrapolate if anybody has any questions, I know I was desperate to find out what the CFI ride was like especially since no one in our area had taken the ride with our examiner. I gave 1.8 hours of Dual today. My dad was a flight instructor so yesterday and today were the culmination of a dream I've had ever since I was 2 years old! I'm hoping to be the premier Mooney expert in West Texas..... Let's see how well I do www.austinwalden.com

I just wanted to mention that I went down to Waco Flying Service to see Aaron and Robert this last week. I spent 3 days with them. It was probably the ebst instruction I've ever received. They are extremely professional and VERY nice human beings. Not to mention that had a SPARKLING white and blue J model that flew like a DREAM.

Possible conflict of schedule/documentation issue. Thanks everybody else!

As some of you know, I own a m20c. However, for the next week or two I am going to be flying a J model while I prepare for my CFI Airplane. Does anybody have any good(?) anecdotal evidence of what they experienced when going from a C(or so) model up to a J? I will be doing Private and Commercial maneuvers in these, so any tips there would also be great. Landing, flying, takeoffs, crosswinds. Is it all about the same except for some differences in engine management?

Oil Cooler Dug into Cowling - with leaks (PICS)

Appears in what way? I will have it checked in the next few hours when its back at home base. -

New oil cooler installed, Airplane PURRS like a kitten now. Something just seems happier. Oil pressure was a little higher overall now, and the CHT's and oil temps are now much lower on the analog gauges. Will continue to monitor and report back. They had to fabricate a bracket to make it lower, now i've got more than 1/3rd inch clearance and it looks great! -

By the way, yes it was mounted with Tinneman nuts and sheet metal screws.........................WOW -

HRM, Thanks for finding and posting that story. It's incredible how I didn't notice it over the past 6 months. A little oil certainly seemed to be ' no big deal ' as it 'leaked within limits' and I didn't need to put excessive amounts of oil to do a cross country. 100% of my flights in my mooney are 150nm cross countries. I didn't initially think it was a big deal when we saw it after undoing the cowl, but the phrases of 'ruined engines' and 'glad you didn't die' are certainly sobering. -
So the gear wasn't actually visibly down? Weird....But it was in its gear down position in the physical cockpit panel?

Ah yes, the joys of owning your own Mooney. After a thunker of a landing, I was getting ready to put the airplane in the hangar. I looked down after getting the tow bar out. The mechanic near by said, boy thats a lot of oil, is that normal? Oh shit. Immediately I think of all the bad landings I've ever done, and since I've been practicing in the right seat I immediately though I crashed the thing. Next morning we took off the cowl to see what the matter was. I am expecting a destroyed nose... Imagine taking off the pilot side cowl. Towards the bottom left hand side as you take the cowl off, is where these pictures are taken. The first pic was taken right after the cowling was undone. (53 screws per cowl thanks mooney) You can see the oil cooler vents (bottom) rubbing against the inside of the cowl. The bottom pic is the two parts after they have been moved out of each others way. Check out that nice friction burn into the vents. They are ALL supposed to be rounded instead of.....shark toothed. Only a 450 dollar fix from aircraftspruce. I noticed it because oil was leaking from the nose onto the ground. Pretty steadily after it has been parked a second. of course, you always start wondering which landing you had that fucked it all up. Easy to second guess yourself. The mechanic absolved me of all sins and said it was just the previous mechanic that let them rub against each other. Sucks.

I just got through talking to him! He wants me to do CFII first, and I really just want to do CFI-A first. He recommended Gary Kruger with CFI Care to get the CFII taken care of......

Hey all, Up here in Lubbock Texas we can't find a semi permanet flight instructor to save our lives (or even to help us get our ratings!!) I had to travel to get my commercial single, and now I'm ready to have a mentor to help me do my CFI. Anybody have recommendations in The Texas/Ok/Nm area for a good accelerated flight instructor school? I study daily, but I just need reassuracne that I'm 'there.'

They really aren't all that bad, but they are certainly different. Didn't realize that the mooney sure doesn't want to stall, ever. And when it does it tends to drop a wing just ever so slightly. Keep those ailerons neutral.
-
Actually I got it all set up but completely forgot about using it. I'll try it tomorrow morning.

FYI a guy named Immelman posted this in 2010. Could be useful here.

Okay 3 lessons later, and JohngGreen was absolutely right. Getting the right entrance airspeed is the whole ballgame. Max Manuevering Speed in the M20C is 132MPH. Chandelles - I start with an Entry speed of 120MPH. Seems to work out well and I end up at 75MPH constantly. This is a max perf manuever so full throttle full RPM. Eights on Pylons - I enjoy using 18IN MP and 24RPM throttle on this manuever. Keeps me hovering around 110-120MPH depending on the day. Lazy Eights - This one is tough. I think I sitll might be entering this one too fast. I've been doing the start speeds at 120MPH. I am considering slowing down the start speed to 110MPH, but as we all know, thats practically impossible in a M20C

Written? Do that through sheppard air and never look back.

Hey guys I'm getting ready to start prepping for the practical portion of the commercial (and CFI) checkrides. I really want to do all of them in an m20c as I've got more hours in that than any other airplane. Anybody do the commercial in a mooney and have any tips on speeds, manuevering speeds, mooney tricks, RPMs and MP settings or the like that'll make nailing these a cinch?

What part of the US did you live in again? Because the entire thread that the political discussion was posted in devolved into 'WHO ARE YOU CALLING STUPID, STUPID?!?' I think the nice part of this mooneyspace.com is its NOT just for americans. It's also for mooneys abroad. What if we start getting liberal democrat vs tory discussions in here from England. Let's just agree to keep it civil, and avoid a POLITICAL DISCUSSION FORUM. ?

22gb free. Deleted and reinstalled foreflight and reinstalled all data. Still is weird when scrolling through maps as compared to last update. It's a little too sticky.
-
I didn't pay money (donations) for this website to be turned in a political discussion forum. Anywhere, ever. Sincerely, PoliSci teacher at a University

Okay so it doesn't seem like it's a hardware lage issue. It seems like sometimes I will sit ther eand wait for it, and try to move the map and it just won't move at all. Gotta be a sympton of this whole track up center lock feature
-
iPad mini - It never got 'stuck' on the previous edition.

This latest update to foreflight has messed with my ability to 'fast scroll' through the maps. Now it's like the maps are 'randomly sticky' in certain places. Anybody else notice that? I did get it out of airplane center-lock mode.
