  1. Quote: mjc That TwinCo is really a nice-looking and well equipped one. I do have to ask, though... did the previous owner intentionally give the Cheyenne in the background of the photos a matching paint job?
  2. As a side note the insurance cost for the TC is $2002 full coverage with Avemco air and ground with $1000 deductible. Hull value for now is $75k, will up that when I do the engines. They are high time but for what I paid for the airplane they are more than covered. Plus the guy through in 8 very low time chrome cylinders for top or overhaul. It has all the equipment I wanted and I will feel better about the engines when we do them and know how they have been run from a new overhaul. We did a very complete pre buy annual and the few little out of the normal things found the seller fixed without batting an eye. This was his baby and and he did almost a complete rebuild of the airframe and panel only 4 years ago. He likes the smell of jet A in the morning so replaced the TC with a Cheyenne He also had the tip tanks installed as well as the nacelle tanks, this thing will tanker 140 gals for well over 9hours of flight. It has been flown to England and all over Europe. I do love the Mooney but wanted a little more useful load and still like night and IFR flying. Now all I need is a day off with no snow to bring it home. I am planning S&F this year in style, I hope to meet some of the Mooney people there. This is a great list and lots of cross over infromation, I plan to be here for long time. Terry

  6. Here is a question if not too personal, is one about insurance. If this has been beat up in another thread please point me in that direction. How much (ball park) and with what company do you cover your Mooney? For a base line and to try to keep it apples to apples I would like to narrow it down to a 201 with a hull value of $80k +or-. To start things off I have gotten a quote from Avemco (they have had my C-170 for 15 years) for $1682/yr. This is full coverage and hangared. My Mooney time is less than 10 hrs in a M20C but many hrs in V-35s, T-34s, and all the Cs and Ps and a few others. My total time is somewhere over 25k. This sounds to me like a good price, my 170 is $1000 with 1/2 the hull value. I have had no claims in the 15 years I've had the insurance with them. Can one do better price wise or find a better co. than Avemco? Terry
  7. Quote: debiassi Mountains can be very rewarding but on the other hand can aso be very dangerous. Do a mountain course with an instuctor. You will pick up some life saver tips. Things that you may not think of that dramatically affect performance. Things like leaning for takeoff when at altitude needs carefull attention. Approaching passes at a 45 degree angl so that if you experience updrafts you are already part way towards turning back as you can guarantee that strong updrafts will qiuckly turn into equally strong downdrafts on the other side. The eitiquette for flying in mountainous terrain also. But make no mistake, for overall scenery, it takes some beating. have a look at the second part of this video
  8. Quote: N9660M Do you think oil analysis program would have helped? From what I've read once the surface of the lobes start to wear there is no way to stop it, so seems like even if detected by an oil lab it would be too late to do much about it. Take care -Jim

  11. "I was always afraid of dying. Always. It was my fear that made me learn everything I could about my airplane and my emergency equipment, and kept me flying respectful of my machine and always alert in the cockpit." Chuck Yeager, Brig Gen USAF (Ret.)

  13. Now I'm afraid to ride in a Mooney let alone buy one!
  14. I see no rule that it has to be a Monney............. so here is mine from a few days ago LAX to ILN FL410 B-767-200. Saw 598, was hopping for 600 for the picture but no luck. It was painful going the other direction to MCI. " Or if, you have access to a 152 or a 172, you may be able to fly backwards! " I have seen up to 15 or so going backwards in my 170 with it's stol kit. Terry PS any Monneys in SJU, would love to buy someone some gas on one of these 4 day layovers. Still looking to fly a "longbody"
  15. Thanks for all the information, that is a great empty wt for your airplane. With my wife and I being under 300# and 50 gals of fuel it would get the job done. I see a lot of them with HSIs installed but would not go for a new install, like you said the whole Aspen setup looks good. Seems like there have been some complaints on this list or elsewhere about the Aspen. Also the way these companies come and go I worry about support down the road. I would hate to be stuck with a 10K black box no one can fix. I have looked at it and now that I have gotten used to the flat panel in the “76” I don’t mind it too much. We have a mix of CRTs and flat panel airplanes and it’s a pain going back forth between them. For the first few legs I keep looking at the clock for airspeed (the only round dial in the airplane and in the same place as the airspeed on the others) And yes, my gut says keep it simple and just look at the J. We'll see what is on the market this summer and just keep banking the money till the right one comes along. The longer I can contain myself the nicer the airplane I can buy. I'm sure this list will be a big help in finding a good airplane also. Terry
  16. Thanks for all the info, Don, what is the empty wt of your 231? Wish I had a chance to fly with you but our DAL/DFW layovers have gone away. All equipment being the same how much higher is the empty wt of the K over the J ?
  17. Just when I thought I knew witch Mooney I wanted this topic shows up. The job is still going to my surprise and some of the flying is getting interesting as well. This month we started flying East across the pond. I'm now about 6 months away from doing a cash deal on a "J" and now you guys have got me thinking about the 231. What to do? I see the price come down every day it seems on the "F" and "J". I had not thought much about a turbo just for the cost of buying one and feeding it. The biggest worry to me is how it was cared for before I buy it. I have spent the last 35 years in the Flight Levels and can see a real plus for being able to operate in the upper teens and very low 20s. I feel much better at night as well knowing I can dead stick into an airport somewhere. The hard part is deciding if a 231 is the right thing to do. It may not be worth it for my 50 to 75 hours a year type of flying. Here is one on eBay right now, care to "rip it apart" as a learning exercise in Mooney buying? Why or why not would this be a good deal, what would be a fair price for this airplane with the information in the listing? What is NOT being said? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=320334890975 Terry
  18. Quote: Greg_D Pretty soon, you'll be able to buy a J model for $60K. And yes, the plane pictured is my Ovation.
  19. Thanks Greg, I just wanted to know which issues.......... I can down load them form the MAPA site. I work for ABX Air, what’s left of the old Airborne Express before the CEOs gutted the company and sold out to DHL. DHL did in 5 years what UPS and FEDX could not do in 25 years,,, put us under! I have been a pilot there for over 35 years, the last 10 on the 767. It's been a great ride but I still hate to be forced to retire before I'm ready. I hope the Mooney will fill some of the void, if it only flew as nice as the 76 :-) I would love to get a newer one but too many other hobbies and such prevents an outlay of more that 60 or so. Extreme care has kept me in the same job and wife for 35 years, too old to screw it up now! Anyway, if you can just let me know the issues of the price guides I think I can look them up. The guy with the “E” will be one of the guys hitting the street soon and I know he has a decent airplane and will have to sell it. Terry Where are you based? Is that a picture of your airplane?
  20. This is a repost, there was a problem with format on the first. I have not belonged to MAPA all that long so my stack of LOGS is rather short. I may have a chance to buy a M20-E from a friend/co-worker. Can anyone tell me which issue of the LOG has the "E" and "F" ( still holding out for that F) price guide? If interested I can post the details when I have all the info. It would be interesting to hear the opinions of the experts on the list. We just learned today our airline will shut down by the end of Jan which has forced me to down grade my hope of a J. That didn't sound right,,,,, all the Mooneys are great, it's just a money thing and I had hoped to get as new a Mooney as possible. This E is a high time airframe as well as a high time engine. I'm an A&P and don't mind doing an overhaul working with my IA. Knowing the owner I feel the airplane has be well taken care of (he is a profecional pilot as well and A&P). it has a few speed mods and a new panel with HSI but old radios , a panel mount handheld and R-nav. PC is inop. Needs paint as well. I have not flown anything other than the early "C" but I like the idea of the added HP. If anyone is giving demos in So. Ohio let me know We can even trade rides to remind you why you got the Mooney in the first place. There are limitations to having two airplanes for me, but the boss is firm on not selling the "kids" 170. So far the plan is to have a Mooney by Spring. PS Anyone need a pilot, will fly for hundreds of thousands of $s. Terry
  21. Quote: KSMooniac I was in smooth air on top of an undercast, with the autopilot engaged. I moved the seat back, unbuckled, and kneeled on the seat while doing my business. It worked fine, although I just about overwhelmed the pack!
