Oh sorry, the sarcasm was lost on me, it being an aeroplane and we all drive those from the left.

Primary instruments as in the Oil temp etc? In a J they have always been smack bang in front of the pilot. Its one of the things I REALLY like about Mooneys, another I like is the way that the engine instruments are angled towards the pilot for ease of view. Loved that latter one when i first saw this write up on Mooney way back in 82. That photo is sooo sexy.

Well that day has finally arrived. The day when we left Baby in the capable hands of Mastenbroek Aeroskill to have some new radios fitted in. I will of course post photos, and commentary as things go along. Im told it will be a 2 week process, we shall see. Andrew the ubiquitous BEFORE photo the new TV set and audio surround sound system.

An i had forgotten you could get the JPI to talk to the avidyne. But yes we are doing that as well. I will post pics. Ill be selling iff the old stuff if anyone is interested.

Greetings all. Well if Avidyne get their act together with Aeroskill AL “should” be going in on 3/8/2020 (thats the 3rd August 2020 for you people who write the date wrong) To have her long awaited panel tweak done. Do we have an avidyne guy i can kick on here? out will go:- kx155 x 1 KMA24 x 1 KLN 35a x 1 in will go:- Avidyne IFD540 PMA 450B We are taking the opportunity to redo all the intercom wiring, to all seats and radios, so that all of that stuff is brand new and we get rid of strobe clicks, Weird crackles in headsets that come and go depending on....., right hand rear jacks not working, P2 PTT wanting to work only on days with a X in them etc etc. Avidyne will be Vertical RNAV as well as traditional ILS, not full GPSS as we are not swapping out the Swiss watch BK HSI, but near enough. We will be able to set the HSI to GPS mode so that the localiser will track the GPS course and thus the AP if engaged. Our gNC255 will be connected to the GPS WAAS antenna so it will know where it is and be able to give names to frequencies, ie 122.405 will say Elstree Info underneath it which it doesn't at the moment. I cant wait. When I bought the plane the 540 was the one thing i knew she needed and what with the rebuild, then the prop issue, then the market for avionics maturing a tad, it has taken a bit longer than I wanted, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now. Next stage will be gently watching the glass cockpit avionics market to see what happens in that, two years ago i would have said Aspen, but now other products are on the market, and Im in no hurry in this regard, so ill wait a while. Other bit I'm watching is Autopilots, the KFC150 is great and has flown me everywhere, the BK “fix” I really like and will be watching that space closely. Now can someone PLEASE certify electronic film like they have on windscreens of cars so I can put deicing on the wings? Andrew

Interesting thing i discovered today. I was in the plane on the ground and manually moving the trim, full forward and full backward. I then wanted to do the same but with the electric trim. So i turned the master on, flicked the electric trim switch on (the whote cb type switch on the instrument panel) then moved the yoke trim switch and nothing happened. Checked the circuit breakers and all was ok. So I then turned the RADIO master on and the yoke trim switch now moved the trim. So my question is, is this a normal setup? I would assume it is, as my thought process wpuld be that the trim is connected in somehow to the autopilot, and that comes alive with the radio master. Andrew

Really usedul. Thank you. Can the springs be replaced easily?
-
Wow thats really cool. Ill have a look thank you.

Andy thank you, that makes perfect sense, ill go away and check. Do a bit of contact cleaning etc. It would surprise me that its that as she had that old alternator guage flicker for a while till i cleaned those contacts. These birds have so many little components. I looked at the thread of the jack screw the other day for the trim, WOW thats a compliceted bit of kit. I can see now why a lot of ga aircraft have a trim tab and not a whole tail move appendage. Thank you for the info.

No to be honest, although electric trim works fine in flight with no issues.. Why a dead spot on the trim motor though if this happens EVERY flight. Why would waiting a few minutes after activating the trim switch fix a dead spot. Not questioning your answer, just trying to understand how you came to that conclusion. Thanks in advance andrew

Trim switches and Autopilots. AL has ALWAYS had an issue with the trim switch / AP. let me explain. If you flick on the trim switch and then 10 secs later try to test the AP (KFC 150) you get the constant beep beep noise that goes on for ever. If I turn the trim switch on, then go and do the power checks, comb my hair, apply eye liner (you get the idea) THEN test the AP it does its self test and works ok 90% of the time. There are a few times when it fails and I have to move the trim wheel, either manually or electrically (normally the latter) and then it self tests ok. So thoughts on a post card as to what the issue MAY be. I won't shoot anyone if you are wrong, I just need to know where to look when she comes back from the shop. we may need to do a trade deal with you guys on the 30th anyway Thanks in advance.

Probably with a green flag attached. Lamguage is a funny thing, for instance, SAL in latin becomes salary in English because they were paid in salt, but SAL stays as salt in Spanish and French as salt, but becomes salario in Spanish. Lingua in latin means language, but if you say lingua quickly enough and often enough you can see how it has evolved to language or in Spanish lengua. Engineer being the same.
-
Over here you cant call yourself a Chartered Engineer without a degree. Nor i dont think a structural engineer. Wiki probably has more details
-
Ah well you see our sort of mess with the word engineers comes from the evolution of the word from bridge, road, ship builder to incorporate when they invented them engines, so a railway engineer became someone who not only designed and built railways but also someone who worked on the steam engines, note not necessarily the same person obviously. I love our language sometimes.

We are actually being quite nice to him at the moment as he is playing the good cop to my bad cop with the engineers. We are looking to get a permit to fly so we can run the engine in at least and then next day take her to Aeroskill for them to do the Annual. It is driving gently crazy, after all I've got a wedding to plan, as well as try to run a company. Once we get her out of these engineers hands ill be a lot happier and hopefully that is literally a few days away. Ive attached an image of the crack in the landing gear puck retaining plate. When did anyone last check theirs? I reckon there will be a few cracks out there.
-
Further update to keep you all in the loop. On replacing the pucks (if you recall i replaced them as part of the paint, but since we had had a heavy landing I was advised by Aeroskill to replace all the bolts in the landing gear, so took the opportunity to replace the pucks again as well. I will now know i have new bolts etc in the gear. On replacing the base plate in the pucks they removed the bushel and found a crack. So a quick phone call and order to our friends in Kerrville and the parts are already here. This was discovered on Thursday, Way to go Mooney. Speedy service. These are now being installed and apart form a new stall warner, she should be ready to fly tail end of next week. Obviously i will have to play politics a bit with the Engineers at Elstree but that's one of the hassles that I have had to deal with in this horrible saga of the prop strike. I was not allowed to have Aeroskill come across and inspect the plane and remove engine etc, so i was forced to use the only engineers on the airfield, who quoted at me regularly the famous line "you are not actually a customer of ours so you go to the back of the queue", hence it took til December 2017 for them to inspect the aircraft, and we lost three months. Now everything is being done sequentially, when to our mind, while the engine was being rebuilt, the landing gear could have been looked at, stall warner changed, then engine back on and ready to fly. Sorry just venting a little frustration... She is also out of Annual now so will have to be run in, flown to aeroskill for the annual and we waste a few more weeks. I might actually get to fly this year, but possible not! Good new is that i am writing an article for a flying magazine about how to choose a paint shop and what to make sure happens in a paint refresh. Andrew

So a quick update. The prop has arrived and is ready and waiting with the engineers. The CSU has been returned from the states and is in perfect nick. Engine is being out back together this week and tested next ready for delivery on Friday. Then we can get AL back together and into the air again pronto.
-
As promised i have attached a document on what i went through to choose a paintshop, the process as AL was re-sprayed and all the things that you should all look for when you are re-spraying your aircraft. The cost for my re-spray was 20k euros, that DID not include fixing all the defects, nor doing the interior, but it did include all the things mentioned in this document. Atention to detail is the key here. How to respray your aircraft..pdf

Noted and thanks for the offer.

Oh yeah, lol

Beautiful. With the screen on the gtn do you not need a second aspen?
-
The avidyne has an app that duplicates a lot of the boxes functionality on the ipad, including giving you a svt, its one if the things i like about it, also its little wifi keyboard,
-
Useful to know. Thanks Mike

Thanks Chris, thats a fair point. I might put in the 2k system rather than just the one screen aspen, although i have an ipad so apart from it being a backup is there anypoint to having a second screen, oh decisions, decisions. Worth than being a kid ina sweet shop. Now if i could get weather while airbourne........
