    Left Panel

  2. From the album: Left Panel

The original instrument panel looked more like the dashboard of a DeSoto. There were only provisions for eight instruments including a clock. The arrangement of the instruments was hap hazard and having to look down to the bottom for the altitude is a real pain.
  3. From the album: Center Panel

The King COM radio has been moved down, a Narco KX-170 NAV-COM has been added, A Trimble audio controm panel has been added, the intercom relocated and the Davtron voltmeter/air temprature, pressure altitude/density altitude indicator installed. Ther is still room for a 2 1/4" unit in the upper left. The steel frame prevents deep units from being installed in the upper area of the center panel.

This "Y" connector will allow installation of the Davtrom M655 temprature/pressure altitude/density altitude/voltmeter to be installed or removed without disturbing the transponder wiring harness. It is plugged in line between the transponder and altitude encoder and even draws it's power from the connector through an in-line 1 amp fuse. The unit powers up when the transponder is turned on and displays accurate data only when the encoder has warmed up.

Center panel as delivered. A COM radio, a holder for a GPS, an intercom and the ELT control panel, thats all.

    From the album: Wheel

The original wheel was an ugly eyesore and when the frips were removed the horns were heavily coroded.
  7. From the album: Right Panel

The right panel, this it's final layout except for the the wood grain overlay to beautify it. It still retains enough space for one more radio size unit. The 1 1/2" vacuum gauge was replaced with the all important EGT and a 1" vacuum gague was placed on the left main instrument panel. With the installation of a Shadin Miniflow fuel flow computer powerplant management will no longer be guess work. I will replace the EGT 3 1/8" to 2 1/4" bezel with a more asthetic one like that on the fuel flow computer.
  8. Your engine instruments are obviously the Mitchell modular, I was wondering: since they are not TSO was it hard to get approval? The original gauges were of a fairly poor quality, are no longer in manufacture and repairability is questional. I already have an external 2 1/4" oil temp but going this way ties up precious panel space. I myself think that the Mitchell modulars are the best solution aned am seriously considering installing them before another gauge fails.
  9. From the album: Right Panel

My field elevation at KHND is 2,492' the Davtron shows 3,100' pressure altitude because of low pressure whether system and because of the high temprature a 7,000' density altitude. This is exactly why I consider this instrument one of the most important in my panel. Imagine if I were taking off from a field located at 6,000' with pressure as much below standard and temprature as far above standard, the DA would be about 10,500.
  10. Just purchased a Davtron M655 for all the advantages I earlier pointed out. Wired a "T" connector harness which allows the Davtorn to power up from the transponder without actually modifying the transponder harness, You simply unplug the transponder from the encoder, plug the davtron into the encoder and plug the transponder into a connector in the davtron harness. I am still mulling over where to install the probe for best accuracy to avoid effects from sunlight and onboard heat sources. I really do not want to drill a hole in the bottom of a wing! which is the advised install position (any advice wound be appreciated) I discovered another advantage the instrument has in that calculating TAS allows you to skip a tedious step on the E-6B, you simply enter the density altitude and read TAS on the outer scale over IAS on the inner scale. You avoid the eye strain of trying to set the temprature over the pressure altitude while trying to fly the airplane at the same time. Digital E-6Bs are OK but with this method the old one is faster and easier! BTW spent $100 on the Davtron but had to spend $60 for a new probe.
  11. Since the POH is in MPH a revised POH would be required for the airworthines certificate to remain valid. It is possible to revise the POH yourself but the approval process is cumbersome and sucess is unlikely. On the other hand it is unlikely to be detected except in a post crash investigation.
  12. There are numerous advantages to a Davtron digital unit. The first of which is flexibility in where you mount the probe since it can be as much as 10' from the indicator. An obvious advantage is accuracy in calculating performance especially density altitude for takeoff performance. Another advantage is visibility they are illuminated and can be mounted in the instrument panel; just try reading an old style Aerotherm OAT gauge at night. Flexibility in that the Davtron instruments are multifunction, the simple ones also function as a Voltmeter/voltage alert while the more complex (M655-2) units display voltage, temprature, pressure altitude and calculate density altitude.
  13. Is that A name I see on the side of the nose? Post one of the name, so few aircraft these days have names.
  14. I love that paint job!
  15. From the album: Right Panel

Circuit breaker labeling was done on Microsoft Word then printed on to peel and stick vinyl. The curcuit breakers are now openable and resettable allowing for better load managment under adverse conditions. there are two additional breakers dur to the compact size of these breakers. I have moved the turn indicator breaker to the left panel giving me three more breakers total.
  16. Original panel as purchased. Previous owner removed Mixture style EGT gague. The panel is totally inadaquate to the task of managing the powerplant.
  17. From the album: Right Panel

Fabricated circuit breaker panel with associated bus ready for install.
  18. From the album: Right Panel

The original panel had only 11 breakers of the reset only type; not even up to the task of supporting the equipment already installed let alone any additional equipment. The labeling was poor and unprofessional looking. I did not like the idea of a door over the breakers which you would have to open to see if a breaker had tripped so it will have to go. Using the unused instrument slot for audio jacks seems a colossal waste of valueable panel space.
