Hello,

Looking for recommendations for an instructor somewhat close to Akron, OH for a check out in the Ovation. Over 1,000 hours in M20C and 201 but the 201 was sold back in 2018. The Ovation to me is much heavier and different the the 201. I am current and flying a Falcon 2000LX and Hawker 900XP but I want to be safe in the Ovation.

Thank you,

John Keck

John:  We discovered landing at half flaps takes away any porpoise tendencies, have your instructor teach you that technic, it adds @ 4 knots to landing speed.

We never land with full flaps anymore.  Congrats on an awesome airplane.  If you ever want to sell I am looking for another Ovation!

Another great bit of advice. Thank you.

The Ovation seems to me like a traveling machine more so than going out in the previous 201 and just flying around locally.

I was taught the same 25 years ago.

As a bonus, aborted/balked landings (as well as the much and hotly debated “touch and go’s”) are a snap. If you were flying a stabilized approach you are properly trimmed. You are therefore already configured for T/O.

No helmet fire, no breaking your focus upon your runway scan by fumbling around looking at knobs/switches on the panel, nothing to think about - just add power. Then gear up, flaps up - like a normal takeoff.

John:  I have a nearly new Ovation cover from Bruce's If you are interested give me a call. I have no need for now. 423-322-3971

If you don't find anyone closer, you can try Jeff Schnabel based out of KLUK.  I haven't flown with him yet, so this is more info than a recommendation.  But I plan to when my plane comes out of the interior shop to get current again and do an IPC.  I had found his info on the CFI list on The Mooney Flyer and he seems like a nice guy.
