thinwing Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 Ree..welcome to Mooney nuts!! I think what Scott was so inelegantly trying to say..the airgizmos install has been covered a lot..however I installed one for a 696 in copilots position. The avionic shop I was working with handled all the paper work...I donot believe a 337 was needed as it was not considered a major airframe change...kpc Quote
scottfromiowa Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 Thanks for the compliment. If I was ever called "elegant" to my face I believe after spitting whatever beverage I was imbibing in unto individuals face from laughter and shock I would just shake my head and walk away. Inelegant, Yep that works. ps-If anyone is looking for a hard wire power cord for a 496...I have one just removed for my 696 update. With this update (696) be advised that you must also modify/get conversion for fixed exterior GPS antenna as the 696 doesn't have Co-Ax input. I found on Amazon for about $10. Quote
thinwing Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 Scott...your welcome!!!...I am interested in 696 update...I have the supplied antenna (external)installed on a plate underneath glareshield.Have never noticed a signal problem and it is always first to initialize (530w/430w take a minute longer)So if I understand your post..there is an update on the antenna output type??kpc Quote
scottfromiowa Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 I think you are fine. I was upgrading from a panel mount 496 to the 696. I had/have an external (roof of aircraft) antenna with the 496. The 696 seems to acquire a LOT better than the 496 as it acquired in my office without the provided antenna even hooked up! I already have external antenna, so need adapter to connect to the 696 (in Air Gizmo panel dock). I might have problems with my audio input as it is a horizontal pin also. I will see when I take to airport and pop it in the plane. Just waiting until I get the antenna adapter to put it in. I have been having fun playing with the 696. Takes all the good of the 496 to a higher user level. Quote
thinwing Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 It is an awesome unit.Does everything the 530/g500 does but interface with the autopilot. All input jacks have to be 90 degree as you know already ,as there is so little clearance between 696 and airgizmo panel mount. We got chart view/jeppeson georeferenced charts and my GF copilots handles all the approach briefings.A friend sent me a file for mooney ckecklists specific for the Bravo..way cool.I donot know if a 496 antenna is compatible with a 696..I think they are powered units and receive voltage from the unit...kpc Quote
scottfromiowa Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 UGGhhh. I guess I will need to re-do the audio cord that I have routed from co-pilot side of panel to the AirGizmo. The antenna is same as Garmin antenna's for panel mount units...The 496 had the correct connector. Quote
thinwing Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 mine is a tight 90 degree I had to buy on line....i have the straightend terminating out a unused cb hole with a 3/8 in gromment. The 3.5 mm audio plug can now be pulled out like a 1930s telephone operators rca phone jack and plug into 1..intercom....2 Gfs I phone...sinc kp couch Quote
scottfromiowa Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 Bought a small 90 degree plug at shack. has a realy thin flexible line that has a female plug. $8.00 bucks. Hope it works. Still waiting on my antenna conversion...flying weather has been non-existant for over a month, unless you want to fly in single digits...no thanks. A warm up is coming.....finally to Iowa. (above freezing anyway). Quote
thinwing Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 I grew up in Alaska,so I feel your pain..chillblanes that is...your hanger has got to be really cold..winter here consists of 300 ovc fog (on top @1500/1800)in the valley except when a pacific storm rolls in with tops to 18000 and forcast ice.Get a 100000 btu kerosene heater (jet a) going in the hanger....aaaaaaah..kpc Quote
scottfromiowa Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 I could hear Tim the tool man Taylor grunting after the 10,000 BTU's. Awesome! Yes, that would definitely be better than the little ceramic heater and flex tube I stick in the cowl flap! Quote
