Lets say I have put well over 500 hrs (as in over 1000 hrs) on my Mags, however I think it is time to have them rebuilt before I have any trouble with them. What I really want is electronic ignition but that is not to be at this moment as far as I know! Anyone know any such availability for the TSIO520? Any recommendations / Pireps for Mag rebuild please advise! Thanks,

This may be here somewhere, but I could not find it. Does anyone have a diagram of the Garwin Starting Vibrator (31-324) used for the Shower of Sparks, or lacking that, does anyone know the value of the capacitor in that box. The cap in mine has failed (electrolyte everywhere), and it looks like it is straight forward to repair it, if we can just determine the value for the cap or even better a part number. It is not readable on the one I have due to the electrolyte and other corrosion.

To make a painful story short as i can - '68 M20C with O-360-A1D just out of annual, mags had 500hr IRAN, engine runs great on local flight. Then I flew 2 hrs to Hyannis yesterday- no problems at all. I come back this am and try to start, temps in 50s, Starting vibrator box buzzes, battery is strong, starter turns great, but not the slightest hint of combustion going on. I then get it preheated- still won't make any combustion. I have the mechanic come out on a Sunday - he finds no spark being made on bottom plugs. Connections from starting vibrator to left mag are fine, harness and plugs are fine. I suspect a left mag problem caused by the recent IRAN. But then he checks the starter switch, finds multiple loose connections to the switch, tightens them all. It makes spark, starts immediately. But I don't really get what happened here because I don't know the system well enough. My questions- Did the p-lead ground fail to be broken because a loose connection to the starter switch? If so, would it have been possible for the mags to ground unintentionally in flight? I would think the opposite- it would leave you with a hot mag. Anything else I should investigate here? For whatever it's worth, the ignition switch was replaced in the last 10 years, is made by TCM.

So when referring to left and right mags is that facing forward or back? And since I'm not looking at the engine at this moment which mag fires the top plugs.

I have a dual magneto setup on my 1992 M20J. It is a Bendix 3000 series. I recently sent the Mags off to Quality Aircraft for a 500 hour inspection and because I recently experienced a 175RPM drop on the right Mag during a run up. There was a series of parts changed on the Mags including new gears, points, capacitor and impulse coupling. Mag was installed during the annual inspection and engine was timed. Aircraft fires up and runs smooth on both mags but I am now getting a 200RPM drop on both Mags. The drop is real as you can feel the loss of power and roughness. All plugs were verified good under pressure and the wires are new. I did an in flight Mag check at 2.5’K and did not feel ANY loss of power or see a RPM drop on either Mag. As always… I would appreciate any advice! Thanks....Rick
