The top cowling on my 1977 J is going to need some fiberglass work in the not-too-distant future. It has a lot of spyder cracks, and the holes for the Camlock (or in my case, CLoc) fasteners are getting rather enlarged. I talked to a local aircraft paint shop. They said that it would be a very labor-intensive job. If I’m looking at thousands of dollars anyway, I might consider a Lopresti cowling. But I have no idea what they cost, or if they’re even available anymore. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hey folks, 1964 M20E I’ve had to take off my cowling a number of times lately as I’m having some avionics work done. The screws holding in each side of the access panels and the small center strip seem to be randomly sized. When I put the panels back on, I’m having to try the different screws when the one I choose doesn’t fit. It looks like I have two different sizes (see picture). I took them to a hardware store and they measure M5 and M4 but I’m not sure if that matters. The larger of the two doesn’t typically fit so I’d like to order more of the smaller ones. The parts catalog I received with the plane shows the cowling for 1965 and a screw - AN526-1032R8. Side note: The parts catalog says serial numbers 470-831 is 1965. Mine is #476 but my registration indicates 1964. I think it was completed in November. I assume this catalog is correct for me. What page would I find the access panels on? It’s not the cowling I need screws for but the access panels (pictured). Is the AN526-1032R8 the correct size for these? I know these holes get worn and different sizes may fit but I’m looking for the original screw size. Thanks, ~ Dan

Anyone know what causes these areas to crack on a fresh paint job? It’s on the cowling. is it avoidable?

Has anyone installed a video camera inside their cowl? For some reason, I cannot keep the CHT's for #3 & #4 below 450 with the cowl flaps closed. The baffling looks okay on the ground but would like to see what it does in flight.

The left cowl flap on my 77 J broke. The bracket that attaches to the cowling is held on by what looks like three rivets. They have pulled through the cowling. What is the best way to repair this. I don't have any rivets with heads near that size. It looks like an aluminum double on each side of the hinge would hold it but the holes are large enough it would slide around. Anyone know how this should be repair, short of buying a new cowl?

What kind of cleaners can be used on a 201 cowling. Want to remove some old adhesive but don't want to hurt the fiberglass.
