I believe the gauge worked correctly and there was not a problem with it.

Also about the loan part... If it was purely a toy I may feel differently about borrowing money on it, not sure. Either way though it is not a toy. I own part of a metal building mfg and so I will be using it to visit customers in various parts of the country and keeping up with our network. It was also a great tax break when we bought it, 100% deductible.

Check the vernatham valve. My plane did this too while I was training for my PPL and my instructor pretty much shrugged it off thinking the gauge couldnt be working or something along those lines. I didnt think much if it either, I suppose because of his response, my mistake.. BIG mistake. what would have cost maybe $1,500 to address ended up being a full rebuild at around $55,000 or so. Plane has been down over 7 months and should be flying next month again...

well... still not flying. Long story short they where putting it together and the exhaust had cracks and got sent to ACORN Welding in Canada as they are the only ones that can work on the turbo RAYJAY exhaust systems. Bottom line, after everything that has popped up on top of what the initial quote was and the loan was made for I'll have a little over $17,000 out of pocket besides the loan. Was hoping to have some credit left over at the shop and I got a bill for over $18,000 which he dropped some to get under $18,000. Good news, pretty much everything firewall forward is rebuilt or went through and the plane has a fresh annual.

Update: Does not look like we will be spending extra money into it besides me taking out and painting plastics. I attached some pictures of that, came out fairly well for the amount of money spent on it, the shop is letting me take them out and reinstall them myself and work on it while its in their shop so thats nice. Engine is complete and should arrive this week yet I hope, hopefully all is ready to go flying in about 2 weeks give or take.

Has to be from a licensed appraiser. Someone suggested Ron Herold and I did talk to him but he is unable to assist until November. I called Cynthia at Van Bortels who I have dealt with in the past when we where plane shopping and Randall there had a guys card from DFW that does appraisals. Just got off the phone with him and he agreed to do it for $495, I feel much better about that. His name is Tracy Ligon.

Just talked to the bank, they want a new appraisal done on the plane now with the new engine and the place that they have wants to charge me $1,750 to appraise it going off pictures and invoices.... Does anybody know of a licensed appraiser that would do this for less? I'm not very familiar with this process but to charge that amount for not even physically looking at the plane and just going off a few pictures and invoices seems awfully steep to me.

Inspection came back. Camshaft is what the metal was so what will be extra besides the regular overhaul is: Camshaft Prop Governor Crankshaft Gear Overhaul Scavenge pump They also found some damage to the case, but they think it is repairable, they have sent it off and it will take 4-6 weeks to get done I believe. I've decided not to spend anything extra in avionics besides maybe the upgrade to the JPI. I'll paint the plastics and most likely replace the carpet and call it good. Hopefully I'm flying in 2 months...

The CFI I was using was a young guy but with many hours, and no he was not Mooney specific. I cant blame him for me going along with the assumption though, its my plane and I should have had the clarity to get that checked out right away. I like the idea of doing a JPI 900 and dual G5's, that would clean up the panel tremendously. I will wait to hear back from inspection though first and see what the engine verdict is. The turbo was sent away too as well as the prop. I will probably end up taking the plastics out and either painting or wrapping them myself, and replacing carpet with a SCS kit with the stiff side panels. If there is quite abit left over besides that I'm still torn.. dual G5's saves money on the engine rebuild... JPI 900 is less expensive but does not have the added benefit of getting rid of vacuum.. Would love to be able to rearrange the panel to be able to mount the 396 in the panel as well. Also not sure how long we will keep this plane, I'm thinking at least 1-2 years but not sure beyond that, may want to upgrade at that point but I really a hard time knowing because we have not started to fly as a family yet, wife and what will be a 2 and 3 yr old. Scenario: I only keep it a year or 2 and put about 300hrs on during that time before I upgrade to a different plane. Would you still mess with the avionics at all or leave it be?

How much does it cost to "re-arrange" a panel? If I just took some of the old stuff out and added a JPI-900 and got a new panel made so I could mount the hand held in the panel that'd be pretty nice. Totally new to working with the panel, where do you get the panels made to mount the instruments in different locations and is that in itself labor intensive and super expensive to do or??

So the 900 would replace these gauges correct? The reason the engine did what it did was because of a bad vernatherm valve we think. More towards the beginning of my training I was flying with my instructor and we noticed the oil temp gauge was showing really high, it got brushed off and he assumed it may be a faulty gauge. I should have had it checked out but it was my error for just going with that assumption, lesson learned, temp gauge was working correctly.
