Got my renewal insurance quote today...
Fookz92 replied to ragedracer1977's topic in General Mooney Talk
Not a clue. I had to mention "Global aircraft" to her before I get a quote. (I did prior research to find global and better rates) -
Expected approximate cost for prop overhaul
Fookz92 replied to tfagin's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
My IA was pushing for the overhaul more than me. But it is a peace of mind now that it is done. The plane has been dormant for over a decade in a hangar. Was concerned about possible corrosion or rust. The findings during the overhaul?..... none. Just and AD compiled with is all. -
Got my renewal insurance quote today...

Purchased a 69 Cherokee 140/160 in Jan 2016. $35K hull value with Starr. 1500hrs TT ATP/CFII rated. With a lot of multi and turbine experience. 24 years old. $650/yr. Jan 2017 Renewal at $795/yr with 1800hrs TT. Jan 2018 Renewal at $485/yr with 2100hrs TT. Sold the Cherokee in March 2018. But why the inconsistency?! I just dont get them. Bought my 77 J in December 2017 and my broker gave me a quote from Starr. I about fell out of my chair at $1850/yr at $100K hull value. Zero Mooney time. Required 10 hours of training. I ended up going with Global for the same coverage for $1050yr and only requiring me 2 hrs with a Mooney instructor. -

Expected approximate cost for prop overhaul

East coast Propeller located in Lititz, PA. Talk to Randy. He's a straight shooter. 77J bought in Dec 2017. Propeller with 960hrs SNEW. Never overhauled. Cost $2500 and that includes shipping back to you. -
Is your Mooney in a LLC (Limited Liability Company) or in your personal name? If in a LLC, Which state did you form it in and why? I am having a hell of a time with the FAA Registration office and getting my airplane in a Delaware LLC. Had anyone else been through or experienced a difficult time with something like this?

Kay's is great! I'll even treat ya! PM me next time you are thinking about heading down and I will send ya my #. Its not there in CGE yet. Still stuck at another small airport close by, out of annual. I give it another month before it's totally done.

I live in southern DE. I am based in CGE (Cambridge, MD). I fly a Lear out of ILG on a regular basis, so I know the area up there well. I just purchased my J in December and is still in mx from being stationary 10 years. I have another thread started "resurrecting a J" on here if you want to check it out. Haven't updated it in a while tho.

Well then after reading my post, you can see that I was only seeing who's skin I was getting under. And who has admitted to actually attempting such a maneuver. I easily knew everyone would have their own opinion on this matter and ready to chime in. Thought: If someone else was reading this and thinking of doing such a maneuver in a Mooney, they should know not to by now.

I see the altitude hold switch. But I don't have electric trim in my airplane. Would it have its own servo that allows it to maintain the altitude?

Getting ever so close now. Prop is at East Coast Propellers getting a overhaul. Once returned and reinstalled, all thats left is the annual. I Ran it up and down the runway last week a bunch of times to get the new brakes broke in. It ran smooth. Should be complete and airworthy by the time I get back from Sun n Fun. Looking forward to meeting some of ya here around Delaware.

I have a Pathfinder P3B Autopilot in the J I purchased recently. Haven't been able to fly it yet due to mx. I am aware this is old school autopilot but it seems that it will work. Is anyone else running such an autopilot still? is there any support for it? Yes I am looking at options to upgrade it to something else. And yes I have been on google with not much help.

Gentleman, This was a mere attempt to see who has attempted or accomplished such a task. I have near 100 hours worth of aerobatics logged in Pitts and Cristian Eagles. NO WAY would I do even the simplest 1G roll in a Mooney. The advice and inspirational quotes are very welcomed nonetheless.

No, I am not talking about sushi here. My instructor tells me the J can do a barrel roll effortlessly. What is the best way to accomplish this? My instructor says it will be started with nose high attitude. Who can attest to this?

Update 2/27/18: Project "Resurrection of a J" is 50% complete now. Gave her her first bath in over a decade. Under all that dust (tons of dust) she was still shining. Work completed: #2 cylinder was sent away for an IRAN end ended up overhauled. 958 hours on the rest of the motor and cylinders. Test ran & compressions were excellent. Changing the oil and starting oil analysis next. New Fuel pump, brake rotors, and gear boots ordered and enroute. Annual with the IA to follow. Plan to take first test flight mid march as weather starts to improve on the east coast.

I had a friend suggest to me the other day why not have a standby electronic ignition system as a backup to the single shaft mags? Anyone have this? is it even possible?

UPDATE 12/19/2017: At last, I Closed on the airplane today. Sent all the "goodies" to the FAA office for filing. Time to get greasy and tear into this thing tomorrow first thing. Goal is to have it at Sun N Fun 2018 all done up.

12/17/2017 Update: Finally closing on the airplane on Tuesday! Title search turned up a old lien from 1979 that never got removed. So a month after submitted to get it cleared, someone finally did their work. So it has been a painful waiting game. Meanwhile, I had a second mechanic come by the hangar and get a second opinion on the aircraft. Plan of action now: IRAN on just the one cylinder that was pulled for the pre-buy inspection. IRAN on the propeller. Leave the gear pucks installed because they show no dry rot or softness. Brake system could mean just fill up the system with fluid. Replace all O-rings and rubber seals on all components. Leave fuel servo as is (it ran fine on pre-buy) Will start a engine oil analysis program (SOAP) Questions: What engine oil analysis (SOAP) do people use? Im not crazy on the dual mags with the single shaft deal. Is there something better out there?
-
Tom, Will do. I keep my Cherokee hangared in #16 at KCGE. Stop by and introduce if you see the door open. I will keep an eye out for you. Kays has great food. -Hunter

Very rare indeed but the logs tell it all. Poor thing was barely used but he kept up with every annual since he bought it new in 77. Top overhaul is all I am going to do to it as far as engine work. Fuel servo will be sent off for an overhaul as well before I obtain a ferry permit to take it to the neighboring airport. (10nm)

yes of course! Once airworthy again, It is all in the plan to have them come out and watch. Even the cameras will be rolling so I can make my next video.

10/31/17 update: Getting the remaining jugs off and sent away to Penn Yan for an overhaul. Repairing brake system.
-
Great to hear. Looking forward to meeting you all in the near future. ~Hunter

Ah yes. I asked for the jugs to be pulled so the cam can be inspected. A lot of people were stressing the issue to me to have it done. It was a very thorough 6 hr pre-buy process. But those guys at the MSC were terrific and know what they are talking about
