  1. It had several mods on it when I bought it, I'd have to go back through the logs to see exactly what they are but I know I have a 201 windshield, the smooth belly, and the flap gap seals. I think I have the aileron seals and the cowling mod, but I'm not for sure. If the cowl helps with cooling I probably don't have it as I do run hot on climbout
  2. I've got a 1968 M20C with some mods already on it, but I was wondering what are some STCs that y'all highly recommend and what kind of prices could I expect on those. Thanks
  3. I've changed the oil on it, but this sounds like a completely different animal, I'm just worried about getting in over my head and then having to pay a bunch of money to have it finished anyway
  4. Doesn't that require you having an A&P as well as knowing what you're doing, neither of which I possess
  5. My second opinion just told me a minimum of 60hrs based on prior installs he's done so that doesn't sound any better
  6. Oxford, MS
  7. curious as to who yall used they might be near me and I don't have an established A&P or anything, I used this guy yesterday to repair my audio panel but other than that I haven't had any experience with anyone else.
  8. The EDM-900 from aircraft spruce was $3375 he quoted 70 hours labor at $95 an hour as well as $250 for misc. He also said some hoses might be required and the last one he did ran around $1000 for that.
  9. So I got an estimate today from the avionics guy and he estimated a little over $10,000 with 70 hours of labor factored in (he said the real amount should be lower than this), but still looking at that amount of money made me wanna throw up so I think I'm going to change up my plan quite a bit. My new thoughts are to just buy individual instruments for the things I really wanted. So I'm going to get my inop fuel gauges fixed as well as get a fuel flow gauge installed and a carb heat gauge. My questions are what do yall recommend as far as a good fuel flow gauge that's not bad in price, and when looking at carb heat gauges I saw the ARP Carburetor Ice Detection System for $413 on aircraft spruce so I was wondering if I should get that or a carb heat gauge. Also I really want to get more precise with leaning and I currently have an Alcor EGT gauge and a standard CHT gauge but was wondering if I should get an expanded one of either of those that will give me info on all cylinders or what I should do with that.
  10. So I just saw Cessna's newest 172 and 182 models and I was amazed to see that they came standard with diesel engines and FADEC, further research showed that the diesel engines are gonna burn a significantly less amount of fuel 10gph compared to 13.5gph in the case of the 182 as well as the already much cheaper cost of diesel. What are yalls thoughts on the future of aircraft piston engines as well as alternative fuel options. I'm wondering when Mooney will incorporate diesel engines or the FADEC system because it seems to me fuel costs are the biggest deterrent against people on a budget wanting to buy their own plane.
  11. Y'all are starting to lose me now, so you're saying once you lean the mixture there's no longer a substantial increase in FF even at FT?
  12. I don't have any kind of FF system installed currently I just go by the numbers in the POH and those have been fairly accurate for me so far. Based on what y'all have said I guess I'll have to get whatever is wrong with the fuel gauges fixed while they put in the EDM, hoping it's not a crazy increase in cost.
  13. Wow I never knew that, once I get my EDM 900 put in I'll start flying like that and see what the difference in fuel flow is. Do you think there's a substantial difference with the extra jet turned off?
  14. That sounds logical since I usually get into that range once I pull the throttle back to slow down for landing
  15. Hank, I always descend power on too I like to get good ground speed in the descent, even in perfectly smooth air I start to get nervous around 170mph and pull the throttle back do you normally go faster in the descent or where do you push it. I usually lean for 50F rich as well it seems to be a good compromise between best power and best econ. I've never heard of pulling the throttle slightly to create turbulence, I had read that its most efficient to run full throttle so in cruise I always did full throttle and 2500 rpm. Also my instructor told me to prevent against shock cooling to pull the throttle back 1-2" every 1000 feet or so, I always just pulled it back when I was getting too fast. Thanks for all the info!
  16. I've got most of these covered; I never thought about getting a recent version of the POH I'll look into that and I'm currently getting everything set up to get an EDM 900 set up so that I'll have very precise engine measurements, very excited about that.
  17. Well that's really great to know yeah I had read about the leaning when using carb heat but I haven't had a chance to test it out yet. Speaking of leaning, I read an article that said you should lean pretty aggressively on the ground to improve engine life and I usually take off with the mixture out about 2 fingers width for best power. What do y'all think about it and what are your leaning procedures
  18. Thank you Hank, yes I didn't really appreciate the plane until I bought it and got used to it, going 140knots and burning 8.2 gal/hr isn't bad. I have an issue with my carb heat whenever I turn it on especially coming in to land the engine starts to sound really rough so I limit when I run it to only when I think carb ice is possible. I'm just wondering if yours does the same thing.
  19. 1. Get my commercial license 2. Get my CFI 3. work as a flight instructor this summer 4. Get married in July 5 Have a great honeymoon its gonna be a good year
  20. Does anyone know the reason why the POH says not to run the RPMs between 2000-2200 I believe, I've tried to look into this but can't find an answer anywhere
  21. Hello Everyone, I'm a new owner of a '68 Ranger as well as a fairly new pilot (a year and a half and 250hrs), I've got my instrument rating and am currently working on my commercial license working towards CFI. I'm always trying to learn more to run my Mooney more efficiently but there's a lot I don't know so I was hoping to get some advice from experienced owners as well as use this to ask some questions I have about it.
  22. Thank you all for the replies, it's making me really lean towards the 900. Yes I have my instrument rating, I'm currently working on commercial and then from there I'm going to get my CFI and perhaps even use my C for instructing for commercial licenses and complex ratings. I have a lot of updated avionics in it, but the main reason I wanted an engine monitor is because my interior fuel gauges don't even work at all I have to rely on my outside wing gauges which aren't very accurate in the air, as well as the added benefit in fuel costs of precision leaning and as Guitarmaster said being able to notice anomalies with the engine and cylinder temperatures which will be great because the C runs very hot on the climb if you don't watch your speed. The only issue keeping me from the 900 now will be the price difference between it and the 830, once my mechanic give me the prices of both if the 900 isn't a crazy amount then I'm definitely going to opt for it.
  23. Wow that's identical to mine, I had to click on the image to see if it was or not!
  24. I really do love the 900 and I thought about getting rid of a lot of my engine gauges, but my instructor told me to hold on to them as a secondary backup. My main concern with the 900 however is the price, I can't really afford to go overboard and the JPI website doesn't list a price for the 900.
  25. Hello, I'm brand new to this site, I just joined so I could post some questions I have about my M20C. I've had it since August now and it's the first aircraft I've ever owned. It's a fantastic airplane, but needless to say I've encountered a lot of questions. I'm looking for a high quality engine monitor, and I'm really liking the EDM 730, 830, and 900 and I'm having trouble deciding which one I should get. I've got a mechanic who says he can order them at cost, but he hasn't gotten back to me with exact prices yet. Based on experience as far as features and quality versus the price go which one is a better deal and how much does it generally cost for installation. Thanks
