  1. Thank you so much for your replies and advice. A&P/IA pulled, cleaned, and repacked bearing and said that all looked just fine. (Photos attached.) Maybe I found the missing hub cap before contaminating the bearing. I was unable to find a new or used hub cap on line, but he located a used hub cap in short order. Still haven't been able to locate the dust covers for the mains with the single screw hole in the center that screws into the hub cap for 6.00-6 wheels. Aircraft Spruce has them in the 5.00-5 size, but not 6.00-6. Saw that LASAR makes a polished stainless steel 4-piece dust cover set -- 1-piece each for each main, and a 2-piece set for the nose wheel, one for each side of the wheel. However, those for the mains require three pre-drilled holes in the wheel and my main wheels don't have those holes, at least not on the inside of the wheels. So, I'm still looking for dust covers in the 6.00-6 size with a single screw hole through the center. Please have a great safe week.
  2. Thank you so much for your replies and advice. Flew twice last week without recurrence of the strange noise on startup. Have contact cleaner and silicone spray lubricant on hand, in case the noise returns. Will need to order some triflow. Please have a great safe week.
  3. I'm concerned and confused by what I discovered yesterday during my preflight inspection of the landing gear wheel assembly on my 1966 M20C. I believe both main gear wheel assemblies are reversed, and the left main landing gear is missing one or more parts. The first photo is the right main, the second photo is the left main, and the third photo is the nose wheel. I also attached Figure 5-6 - Wheel Assembly Chart. Can anyone help me understand what these photos and this chart mean for my airplane, and what I should do to make it right? -- Bobby Rakes, (573) 337-3447, rakes_bobby@hotmail.com
  4. The starter on my 1966 M20C is making a strange noise. I just read the lubrication guide (attached) and discovered that it calls for lubricating the starter drive with graphite & kerosene every 20 hours! How often are you lubricating your starter drive? With what lubricant(s)? What cleaning or other preparation work do you perform before lubricating the starter drive? Is it possible to clean and lubricate the starter drive without any disassembly? -- Bobby Rakes, (573) 337-3447, rakes_bobby@hotmail.com
  5. Sorry, Drew; I only just now saw your message. I only replaced the white incandescent dome light with an LED bulb. I haven't been successful in finding LED replacement bulbs for the two miniature spotlights. LED bulbs that fit the socket are too long to fit into the spotlight casings. I even ordered a kit consisting of two red LED bulbs and two black plastic spotlight casing replacements for the originals. Installation requires rotating the original spotlight sockets 90 degrees, so that they point directly at the instrument panel (instead of at 90 degrees to the panel, as in the original installation). I haven't been able to figure out how to make this rotation successfully; I don't seem to have sufficient slack in the wiring to make the rotation that is required. I'm considering returning the kit ($60) for any refund that I might be able to get. I sure do wish there was a direct LED replacement for the incandescent bulbs in the spot lights. - Bobby, (573) 337-3447
  6. Aaron, I just installed https://www.superbrightleds.com/search/led-products/1156-cw18-t/ in my '66 M20C. Seems to work very well. - Bobby
  7. What could cause a single backfire when conducting a mag check on the right mag? How serious is this and what should I do before my next flight? Since my last annual last summer, I've been experiencing what I believe is a fouled plug when I conduct the the the before takeoff runup check on the right mag. So, to preclude putting the airplane away with a fouled spark plug, I added a preshutdown mag check after my mag ground check before engine shutdown. Ground check was good, left mag check was good with a 50 rpm or less drop, but right mag check at1700 rpm caused just over a 100 rpm drop and a single, loud back fire, followed by a return to normal rpm. Would appreciate any advice -- Bobby Rakes, 573.337.3447, rakes_bobby@hotmail.com, N6094Q, 1966 M20C Mark 21, Lycoming O-360-A1D.
  8. Who did this for you, and at what cost? Would you recommend them to others?
  9. When I took my 1966 M20C to Don Maxwell last year for its annual inspection, after rebuilding the PC pneumatic wings leveling system, he found that it wouldn't hold pressure. He tracked the problem down to hole(s) bored in the pilot's yoke to install PTT switch. Don replaced the yoke for me. Both yokes have a PTT microswitch mounted on a plate that is attached to the yoke with two metal screws. All was well until a few weeks ago when the pilot's PTT microswitch seemed to stop working. I sprayed both switches with contact cleaner yesterday, as a possible easy fix. I'll replace the inoperative pilot's PTT microswitch, if the contact cleaner doesn't do the trick.
  10. Anyone recommend a good, safe polishing compound?
  11. My 1966 M20C Mark 21 is in the shop for its annual. It still has the pneumatic shock attached to the nose gear. Reportedly, most Mooney's have had this shock removed over the years. Anyone have any good reasons for keeping it or removing it? -- Bobby, N6094Q, 573.337.3447
  12. Thank you so much, Everyone. Don Maxwell is my first choice, if I must fly commercial after delivering and in order to retrieve my airplane. Here's my list of nearby alternatives so far: Ivan James, Fredericktown, MO (H88) 573-225-2097 Dyersburg Avionics, Caruthersville MO Jewell Aviation, Kennett, MO Midwest Mooney, Flora, IL (KFOA) POC: Matt McClung Aviation, Mountain View, AR (7M2) POC: Chris McClung 870-615-1407 Thanks again, Bobby 573-337-3447 N6094Q @ KTBN Sent from my iPad
  13. Dear Mooney Teammates: It's annual inspection time for my 1966 Mooney M20C Mark 21 (3261) based at Fort Leonard, MO ( KTBN). Can anyone recommend a good, Mooney knowledgeable shop in Missouri; southern, IL; western KY; northwestern Tennessee; northern Arkansas; northeastern Oklahoma; or, eastern Kansas (basically, anywhere in the circle from Kansas City, MO to Springfield, IL to Paducah, KY to Memphis, TN to Little Rock, AR to Tulsa, OK to Topeka, KS? Alternatively, can anyone comment publicly or privately on experience with Lake Charles Flying Service at Lake Charles, MO (KSET), Lake Aviation Center at Camdenton, MO (H21), or the shop at Higginsville, MO (KHIG)? It was sure great seeing many of you at Oshkosh. My head was spinning for the first few days from sensory overload. Kim gave me the trip for our 30th wedding anniversary. We camped next to our Mooney abeam the numbers on runway 36 for the full immersion experience. Oshkosh did NOT disappoint! Hope to see many more of you there next year. Very Sincerely, Bobby (N6094Q) 573.337.3447
  14. Anyone have a flight time, fuel consumption, oil consumption, etc. log that you're particularly happy with?
  15. Anyone know if there's anyway to find your Mooney's original paint scheme?
  16. Thank you so much to everyone for your comments and suggestions. I replaced a BUSS AGC 30 32 VOLT in-line fuse under the panel on the pilot side and a 2A in-line (wire labeled, "INTERCOM") fuse under the panel on the copilot side with the spare fuses that were taped to their respective wires. Upon startup the ceiling-mounted instrument panel spotlights and and cabin ceiling dome light all work again; I'm think they must be on the circuit with the 30A fuse. There was a high pitched squeal in both pilot and copilot headsets, so without shutting down the engine, I reached under the copilot panel and removed the 2A fuse and just left the circuit open. I used my Icom A23 handheld transceiver connected to another headset to depart, then switched back to my panel-connected headset to monitor weather and traffic enroute, then switched again to my handheld-connected headset for arrival at my destination. On departing for my return flight (JVY to TBN) and switching from my handheld-connected headset to my panel-connected headset, I successfully contacted Approach and picked up flight following for all the way home. The radios work fine with the intercom circuit open! So, must be a problem with my FlightCom 403 intercom and/or it's associated wiring, right? Thanks again, Bobby (573) 337-3447
  17. Dear Friends: On Tuesday, I flew my 1966 M20C Mark 21 from Fort Leonard Wood, MO to Louisville, KY (actually Jeffersonville, IN because I couldn't get into Louisville VFR despite extraordinary assistance from the Louisville Approach controller, but that's another story...). Anyway, I used both radios (King KX 170B and KX 175B TSO) on the way out and most of the way back, but after the final handoff for continued flight following to my home airport, I couldn't contact Center on either radio, but I continued to receive just fine on both radios. Perhaps unrelated, after sunset, I turned on the twin cabin ceiling red lens spotlights which illuminate the instrument panel, and when I rotated the on/off rheostat knob to the full stop brightest setting, both spotlights flashed off simultaneously. Subsequently, the single white light cabin ceiling light failed to illuminate when I tried turning it on. It worked fine the last time I used it a few weeks ago. None of the circuit breakers popped. The filament in the single, panel-mounted fuse appears fine. I found three (there may be more) wire-in-line fuses under the instrument panel. Each appears to have a spare fuse taped to a wire adjacent to the fuse in use that it is apparently intended to replace. I need to return my daughter to Jeffersonville, IN (her car is parked there because of my diversion from Louisville to Jeffersonville) on Tuesday, and really would like to have a least one operational radio for such a long VFR flight. The cabin lights are less critical and time sensitive. What's the most likely reason for both radios to stop transmitting simultaneously, yet continue receiving just fine? Are the cabin ceiling spotlights and the cabin ceiling dome light on a shared electrical circuit with a fuse located under the instrument panel? Thank you, Bobby (573) 337-3447 Sent from my iPad
  18. Congratulations, Paul! Hope all stays on track with your recovery, diet, and exercise. My '66 M20C is missing its ADF antenna. Did you hold on to your ADF antenna? Would you be willing to part with it? Thank you, Bobby (573) 337-3447
  19. Mitch, when bought my '66 M20C last summer, some told me that I would never miss the totally dilapidated and inoperative PC system. DMax completely rebuilt the PC just to give my petite wife the retractable step, and now the PC system is one of the things I love most about my Mooney. Even in light turbulence, it holds heading almost perfectly. Properly trimmed, she flies hands off for many miles; probably the closest thing to an autopilot that I will ever own. Very Sincerely, Bobby Sent from my iPad
  20. Thank you; that's encouraging. And no problems getting it swung within limits without the balancing balls? Flat, tubular, or box windscreen divider? Or, panel mounted? -- Thanks again, Bobby
  21. I really like the looks of the SIRS, BigTex; cheaper than the PAI-700 too! Were the holes in the mount pre-drilled? If so, did they fit well to the holes in your windscreen divider? Windscreen divider flat (like mine), tubular, box? -- Thank you, Bobby
  22. No, not at all, if it's a legal technique for swinging a compass. I work at Fort Leonard Wood, so I can probably borrow a calibrated, high quality compass, transit, or GPS. -- Thank you, Bobby
  23. Is there an index to compass roses in the A/FD? Is the FAA's digital A/FD data searchable for compass roses? -- v/s, Bobby
  24. Thank you; I'll be sure to check my Garmin GPSMAP 295 and iPad Mini for their magnetic track capabilities. -- v/s, Bobby
  25. Thank you, Jose; the prospect of repeatedly repositioning the aircraft on the ground does seem a bit awkward and time-consuming compared to the ease of making a series of 90-degree turns in flight. -- v/s, Bobby
