Thank you; I'll probably need the balancing balls kit because N6094Q is an older M20C with a flat windscreen divider, but hopefully that will be a permanent solution to the magnetism problem, whereas degaussing would probably require periodic repeats. -- v/s, Bobby

Thank you, Jerry. Yes, my sympathies exactly. I have a yoke-mounted Garmin GPSMAP 295, and I just received an iPad Mini from my wife for my birthday and Christmas, but I just feel uncomfortable without a working compass. -- v/s, Bobby

Thank you everyone. My local A&P is willing to install, wire, and swing the compass for me. Now, I just need a nearby (to KTBN) airport with a surveyed and calibrated compass rose. Anyone know of such an airport?

I'm based at KTBN in east-central Missouri. Can anyone recommend a nearby authorized repair station to install and swing a new vertical card magnetic compass to replace the faltering windscreen divider mounted "whiskey" compass in my 1966 M20C? A nearby airport with a surveyed and calibrated compass rose? Master compass? Transit-pelorus? Advice? Concerns?

Has anyone installed a Precision Avionics, Inc. PAI-700 with the PACMO-VMN custom mount? Lighting 28V, 14V, 5V, or no light? Would the PAI-700 with the PACMO-VMN box section windscreen divider mount and 14V lighting be an appropriate replacement for the windscreen-mounted and lighted whiskey compass in my 1966 M20C S/N:3261?

Dear Mooney Teammates: Does anyone know how I can obtain a replacement control knob for the retractable air scoop on top of the cabin section of my 1966 M20C S/N: 3261? It came off in my hand while I was closing it after completing my last flight before the air temperatures began cooling down. I put it in a really safe place until I could get the right part/'tool(s) to replace it -- so safe a place, in fact, that I haven't seen it since, even after thoroughly searching car, hangar, and home! Thank you, Bobby N6094Q (573) 337-3447

Dear Mooney Teammates: My gear warning horn doesn't sound when I retard the throttle to idle in flight in my 1966 M20C S/N: 3261. Is there anything make, model, or aircraft specific that would help an A&P/IA who is unfamiliar with Mooney aircraft diagnose and fix the problem? Thank you, Bobby N6094Q (573) 337-3447

Dear Friends: Does anyone know if the current version of the subject manual is Manual Number MAN 104, Revised July 1980? Actually, what I really need is the current, up-to-date version of Section X (Section 10) Inspection. Thank you, Bobby 573-337-3447

Kansas City Area A&P/IA Needed for Special Flight/Ferry Permit
rakesb replied to rakesb's topic in General Mooney Talk
Thank you so much for your suggestions. DMax prefers not to be involved in the ferry flight/permit; I will check with Roosterville. Unfortunately, my ferry pilot just called and backed out, as well. So, now I also need a qualified ferry pilot to fly the airplane from KMKC to KGGG. My insurance policy stipulates, "Any private pilot or better having a minimum of 500 total logged hours including 100 hours in retractable gear aircraft and 25 hours in the make and model.", which the insurance company interprets to mean 25 hours in Mooney M20 series aircraft. I could also make the ferry pilot a named insured on my insurance policy, if necessary. Can you help me? -- Bobby Rakes, 573-337-3447 -
I'm looking for an A&P or an IA in the Kansas City area who can help me obtain a special flight/ferry permit for my 1966 M20C. I understand that it's a matter of filling out the form for a ferry permit, and looking at the plane to confirm that the plane is safe for this one-time flight. The form is then forwarded/FAXed to the controlling FAA FSDO where the FAA signs off and FAXes it back. The plane was flown to its current location, Signature TechnicAir (KMKC) on 03 June 2013, had a recent history of flying, and was in annual until March 2013. TechnicAir obtained the flight permit for the flight on 03 June 2013, but refuses to help me obtain another permit. The reason for the flight is to take the airplane to a repair facility, Don Maxwell (KGGG), that is more experienced with the maintenance discrepancies needing repair in order to complete the annual. One of the airworthiness discrepancies is cracks in the rear spar. Don Maxwell told me that he sees 2 or 3 of these each year, i.e. the rear spar cracks for which Mooney published a service bulletin and makes a repair kit. Can anyone help me? -- Bobby Rakes, (573) 337-3447

During first annual inspection, A&P discovered a crack in the aft wing spar splice and cracks in the RH rib P/N 210052-8 of my new-to-me 1966 M20C. According to A&P, this is an airworthiness item and repairs to this area will require a wing de mate from the fuselage. A&P is researching to determine whether repairs can be made in this area and what other hidden damage may be present. According to A&P, this looks like damage caused by putting too much load on the flaps, e.g. by deploying the flaps at too high an airspeed, or some other load put on the flaps, which then transferred the load through the driver links and arm to the attach point on the rear spar. According to A&P, this damage is not new; it has been there awhile, and most likely did not happen all at once, and shouldn't have been missed during previous annual inspection(s) -- it is not in a hidden area on this aircraft. I have yet to fly the plane. Ferry pilot flew it from purchase point to annual inspection point. Anyone have any comments, explanation, recommendation, etc. to what A&P reports above? Should I scrap the airplane and cut my losses now, even though I never got to fly the airplane, my first ever, by the way?

Thank you so much for sharing, Jerry. I was flying a rented 180-hp C172 into KLOU a few weeks ago, and after clearing me to land, the tower cleared a Saratoga to land on the same runway, then advised me that the Saratoga would be overtaking me on final. Being a <300-hour private pilot, I wanted know part of that, and asked the tower to hold for the Saratoga. As I completed my 360-degree left turn, the tower again cleared me to land, and I asked about the Saratoga. The tower advised that he was already on the far end of the runway, so not a factor. At the time, safety was all I had on my mind. Later, I felt a little embarrassed that I had "chickened out" of just flying my normal approach and landing as cleared in what I considered a pretty fast airplane for me. Hopefully, when I'm proficient in my M20C, I'll have the speed and the confidence to fly as cleared. Thanks again, Bobby

Thank you so much, Zane, JimR, Hank, and Oscar. I believe that I have locked in a retired airline captain and local (Kansas City area) CFI for the ferry mission, as well as for my initial insurance-required dual instruction in make and model. I’m just waiting for final confirmation from him. Many happy landings! :-) Thanks again, Bobby

Thank you so much Oscar, Hank, and JimR. I took the plunge and bought a M20C. For insurance purposes, I need a plot with 500 hours total, 100 hours retractable, and 25 hours (make and model - M20) to ferry my M20C from Midwest Executive at Lee's Summit (KLXT) to TechnicAir at Kansas City Downtown (KMKC), a distance of only about 14 nm. I also need a CFI, and again for insurance purposes, with the same minimum experience to provide 5 hours of flight instruction to me in the same aircraft, also preferably in the Kansas City area. Can anyone help? Thank you, Bobby rakes_bobby@hotmail.com (573) 337-3447

Does anyone know the interior cabin measurements of a 1966 Mooney M20C? How do they compare to a 1978 Cessna C172N? I'm especially interested in the rear passenger seating space. Thank you, Bobby (573) 337-3447
